To upgrade the Datsun mi-DO's VAZ engine, we will need to replace key parts and the necessary gaskets.
But first things first.
We leave the old valve cover, and the associated gaskets, including two bushings inserted into the holes on the cover, needed new ones. Please note that sealant is not required when replacing bushings. Many sealants exfoliate over time, enter the oil pan through the oil channels, and from there into the oil intake, clogging the system. Therefore, we recommend that you do not use sealant whenever possible.
The whole head
We pass to the cylinder head. We change all valves that are bent to new ones. To do this, grind them and check for leaks. Then we put the valve stem seals, and then the valves themselves. When removing the block head, all gaskets are damaged and must also be replaced.
The gasket between the head and the unit is especially important. It is two-layer, metal, with springy "ridges", which provide a tight seal at a lower tightening torque. Thanks to this part, the volume of gases entering the engine crankcase is significantly reduced - this helps to stabilize its operation, and a lower tightening torque reduces the deformation of the cylinder walls. Our motor uses M10 bolts that are tightened in three steps: first, with a torque of 20 Nm, then they are double-turned 90 °.
Pay attention to the camshaft. On its bearings there are areas that are necessary - without fanaticism! - Lubricate with sealant so that the oil does not leak out along the end surfaces. Having pulled the head, when installing the pushers, it is necessary to check the clearances in the valves, since all the valves are new and the washers are old. The latter, if necessary, will also have to be replaced. The washers have markings; during installation, they should be inside the pusher. The washers are positioned so that they do not rub against contact with the cam cam.
Subtleties of ShPG
We turn to the most interesting - to the connecting rod and piston group. On our plug-in engine, pistons do not have grooves for valves. We decided to change the pistons for new ones with grooves, and together with the connecting rods, as the old ones bent. We ordered parts from an authorized Federal Mogul dealer. The kit for one cylinder includes a piston, rings, pin and the connecting rod itself, together with bolts for attaching the bottom cover of its head. Grooves are visible on the bottom of the pistons, and the number 11189, an arrow, indicating the direction of installation of the piston in the cylinder block, and the release date are marked. The skirt has an improved iron oxide coating that protects it from damage.
The lower head of the connecting rod is made using discontinuous technology, due to which the junction is practically not visible. The bolts that secure the connecting rod bottom cover are tightened in two steps: first, with a torque of 20 Nm, then they are turned back 135 °. The projections on the bottom cover and on the connecting rod body help navigate during assembly. On the lower head of this spare part, on both sides, there is a marking that is duplicated in two places: the date of manufacture of the part and its number in the lot are indicated. All numbers must match.
Pistons are divided into three classes according to the diameter of the skirt. We had class B pistons, so the new ones have the same class, as indicated by the corresponding marking on the parts. There is a mark on the cylinder block - on the mating surface, next to the threaded holes where the engine sump is mounted.
When buying spare parts, it is also important to consider the mass class of the connecting rod! This information is on the cover of its lower head. There are three such classes, and they are indicated by dots - one, two or three. After installing the piston group and tightening the connecting rod bolts, we put an aluminum pan. The gasket is not needed here - only sealant. It is advisable to use an oil and petrol resistant composition. Apply very little sealant so that the excess does not squeeze out into the internal cavity.
We pass to the timing belt drive. We chose the Gates kit, which includes a Dolz pump with gasket, belt and roller with a semi-automatic tensioner. By the way, different devices are used for tensioning. We picked up a crescent-shaped grip designed for a roller. The capture is placed on the roller, a bolt is screwed to the head of the latter, and the belt is pulled. We opted for a large set with a pump to make sure: the mileage of our car is 68 thousand km, and how long the pump installed on it will live is not known.
It was also decided to change the drive belt of auxiliary units - exfoliation appeared on the old one. We bought a Gates 6PK995 belt and a new INA roller instead of the old whistle.
Issue priceBased on the results of the Datsun editorial diagnostics, we named the approximate cost of new spare parts - 50, 000 rubles. What happened in practice? First of all, prices for the updated SHPG (some sellers, by the way, do not know about its existence) fluctuate in a wide range. We bought a complete set for 19, 200 rubles (a set for each cylinder for 4800). The timing belt drive kit along with the pump cost 4, 500 rubles. In total, we spent 34, 200 rubles on the main parts. This amount did not include the cost of oil, antifreeze and consumables required to assemble and clean parts before final assembly of the engine.
As for the cost of work, here the scatter is very large. In the Moscow region, depending on the service, the repair of such a VAZ engine will cost from 15, 000 to 40, 000 rubles.
To "bring to mind" the VAZ-21116 engine, you will have to spend time searching for spare parts and a decent amount. But if the plug-in engine is already covered - and it can happen to it whenever and wherever - such a refinement is guaranteed to save you from repeating a similar situation and all possible consequences.
