A rare old car has survived to our days without historical “layers”. The only question is the scale of the disaster. Decently preserved specimens are found, but less and less, most of them are mass models. And to find a rare small-scale modification, and even more so a prototype, is utopia at all. Have to be content with old photos. Or…
One of the brightest retro-premieres of the exhibition decorated the “At the wheel” stand at Ilya Sorokin’s Oldtimer Gallery. Moskvich 408 Tourist - a sports car on the nodes of the serial Moskvich 408. In the mid-1960s, only two prototypes were made on the basis of the new Moskvich 408. launched in 1964 in a series. One of the prototypes had a steel body, the other with external aluminum panels. To give rigidity, the bottom was reinforced with an X-shaped subframe. In addition, one car was equipped with a CNIT fuel injection engine, which developed 63 “horses” against the standard fifty. It is a pity that both prototypes were allowed under the knife. But it’s wonderful that such a machine was recreated in the workshop of Yevgeny Shamansky - carefully, to the smallest detail. And now we have the opportunity to consider this wonderful car alive. 13 rare domestic cars - now they cost millions!
Honestly, I used to be inclined towards the position of orthodoxy, who not only despise the remake, but are skeptical of machines created from scratch based on old documentation and photographs (these are usually called replicas or replicas). But now I believe that there is nothing wrong with this approach. After all, what is also called restoration is now most often reduced to turning a bunch of rusty metal into a car. And the line between such work and creating a replica is increasingly difficult to draw.
The main thing is not to invent legends about a prototype found in a barn and miraculously preserved or a modification previously unknown. If the remark is honest and skillfully made, respecting her and her creator is already worth the hard work put into it. And for the fact that they give us the opportunity to see not only the picture, but the car “alive”.

From Moskvich to Ferrari: the coolest oldtimer gallery retrocars
So it’s great that at the next (already 28th!) Ilya Sorokin’s Oldtimer Gallery there were preserved, restored, and created from scratch cars. The machines representing each of these areas have their own color and their own charm. Although, of course, somewhat different.
We also took part in the Gallery - we exhibited at the stand of the magazine “Behind the Wheel” a two-door open Moskvich 408 Tourist carefully recreated according to the drawings. Just imagine that such Muscovites could cut through the expanses of our homeland and other countries! How much happier would be the car palette!
