When to go for inspection
Each car must have a diagnostic card - it is received after passing the inspection. The document has an expiration date. When it ends, the driver needs to go through MOT again.
- Category B cars, motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers go through 3, 5, 7 years after release. After seven years, every year.
- Category C vehicles, training cars, and vehicles equipped with special signals pass annual technical condition checks.
- Buses and vehicles for transporting people and dangerous goods - once every six months.
If you bought a used car with a valid diagnostic card, you do not need to go through MOT, even if you changed the numbers.
What will happen if you do not go through MOT
There are no fines for driving a car without a vehicle inspection, but without a valid diagnostic card, you cannot get compulsory motor liability insurance. For the absence of an insurance policy, the driver will be fined 800 rubles. If a motorist without OSAGO provokes an accident, he will indemnify himself for the damage.
Even if the driver has a valid OSAGO policy, but the diagnostic inspection card has expired, there will be difficulties with the payment: the insurance company may require a refund, citing the technical condition of the car.
Where to go TO
Since 2018, inspection can be done in any locality of Russia, and not only in the region where the car is registered.
There are several thousand technical inspection stations in the country. The nearest service station can be found in the register of the Russian Union of Auto Insurers.
What documents are needed for maintenance
To pass the inspection you will need:
- passport or driver’s license;
- power of attorney for a representative if the car owner is not present at the TO;
- certificate of registration, if not, TCP.
The operator of the service station cannot require other documents from the driver.
After passing the inspection, a representative of the operator company signs and issues a diagnostic card to the driver. It will contain information about the condition of the vehicle.
What is checked at the inspection
Brakes and brake pads. The operation of the brake system will be checked strictly according to the standards established by the Technical Regulations of the Customs Union. If there are any problems with the brake and brake pads, correct them immediately.
Headlights and dimensions. Outdoor lighting devices must be intact and clean. Headlights with inappropriate lamps, tinting, film and coloring are considered a violation.

Wipers and glass washers. All wipers and nozzles should work. If the part for cleaning glass is indicated in the documents, the driver does not have the right to clean it. If the wipers are broken, they must be repaired before undergoing maintenance.

Engine. A car will not pass inspection if there is a leak of oil, battery fluid or antifreeze.
First aid kit and fire extinguisher. In the trunk should be a warning triangle, first aid kit and fire extinguisher. Medicines should not have expired.
How much does it cost
The year of manufacture and make of the car does not affect the cost of inspection. Rates depend on the type of vehicle, region, and maintenance point. In Moscow, a vehicle inspection costs about 1000 rubles.
You can pay for maintenance at a bank branch or through a special payment terminal. To do this, select the TO item and find out the details for payment.
