Physical and psychological conditions

Man is a biological being and cannot, like a robot, constantly perform repetitive operations with high quality. Once one’s state of health worsens, or under the influence of external factors, attention will "go away", this can lead to undesirable consequences on the road. Therefore, it is important to tune in to the working mood, without waiting for “last warnings” from nature.

Safe distance - does it even exist? Expert Opinion

For daily trips to work, if possible, combine driving and public transport in approximately equal proportions. Then fatigue from constant traffic jams and fears of being late to the office will not lead to loss of attention and an accident.

Try to get enough sleep. When leaving your home in a painful or tired state, use only public transport. Even if the head is aching or lethargy is felt, this will directly affect the driver’s reaction and attentiveness. But if you, like many others, don’t consider your well-being an obstacle to driving, at least minimize the number of difficult maneuvers (rearrangements, overtaking) and slow down.

It’s unnecessary to even talk about intoxication. At first glance, a glass of champagne in a company or a whiskey tasting in a supermarket are not able to greatly affect the condition of the driver. However, the dose taken may overlap with illness or overwork, which is more likely to lead to a traffic accident.

A bad mood is also a good reason in favor of refusing to use a personal car or reducing the number of complex driver's actions.

To maintain vitality, exercise several times a week. The severity of perception and the ability to analyze the road situation depend on this, because driving a car is not entertainment, but responsible work.

God saves man, who save himself

It would seem that any road is subject to the experienced driver: he has “prepared” answers to most standard situations. And what to do in the non-standard case, when due to its condition or external factors it is difficult to make the right decision. Or is it better not to bring this up?

Choosing a car for the "teapot" - 7 main principles

Always soberly assess your driving skills and, regardless of your haste or temperament, do not exceed the speed limit beyond which some details begin to slip away and tensions appear. On all roads, this limit is different and may well be below the permitted speed.

Also try to get to your destination with familiar roads or use them to the maximum when part of the path goes beyond the “well-studied”. When the usual environment is around, there are fewer surprises and nervousness.

If you are driving or even standing still in calm conditions, still periodically inspect the space around you through the windows and rear-view mirrors in order to be able to distance yourself from the "racers" that can harm even a car parked on an empty highway.

Whatever your confidence in your own driving skills, you should not perform maneuvers intuitively. Even minor factors, if ignored, can adversely affect safety. Never relax until the end of the current action and learn to feel the last line separating from road troubles.

It often happens that on a bad road or with poor visibility, doubts arise in choosing the next driver’s decision. In such a situation, double-check (look around, look for new positions for review) external information until confidence in the safety of further actions appears. To avoid surprises, always proceed from the worst case scenario.

And do not trust the external light devices of other cars until you are convinced of the real intentions of their drivers. If a person turned on the “emergency lights” in one direction, and began to shift in the other, this should not take you by surprise.

Fighting Distractions

The driver is far from always alone in the cabin, and “greenhouse” road conditions are rare. Most often, the trip is accompanied by various factors (both outside and inside the car), the influence of which takes a person behind the wheel from an equilibrium state. To be able to counteract them means to protect oneself from many troubles.

Brake, kettle, woodpecker … How to understand and forgive them

Try to constantly concentrate on the traffic situation, without being distracted by extraneous objects (billboards, beautiful cars). On the road, it is also harmful to think about something personal, ceasing to perceive information coming from outside. If thoughts go toward family or work relationships, train yourself to force them back into place. Otherwise, another emergency will do this for you.

Talking with passengers or over the phone eats up a significant part of attention, and the presence of a mobile phone in the driver's hands (which has become an almost universal phenomenon) also physically interferes with driving. Even it is better not to abuse the hands free system, since the very fact of switching attention is dangerous at the wheel. In busy traffic situations, do not get distracted by a ringing bell (you can phone later) and pause in a conversation with fellow travelers.

If one of the passengers constantly advises you in what mode and on which roads you should go, gently put it in its place and act only at your discretion. After all, only you are responsible for the safety of the trip, and recommendations from the outside are usually annoying and reduce self-confidence.

Never flaunt your craftsmanship or the virtues of a machine. "Effective" driving with speeding and risky maneuvers often ends in disrepair. And it is absolutely not an indicator of driver maturity.

Balance and patience will help you on the roads more than once. You should not respond to the inept actions of the "dummies", overtaking and cutting their cars, or aggressively take vacant places in the stream. Haste is also a bad companion. Being in a grounded state, it is easy to lose control of yourself.

Quite often, not having time to instantly start to the green traffic light or simply not moving fast enough in the left lane, you can hear the annoyed beeps of the "wheel drive professionals" behind you, urging you to clear the way faster. Accustom yourself not to react to these ill-bred attacks and be guided only by the environment, otherwise a traffic accident is very likely.

When you see an ambulance (fire department, police) in the rear-view mirror with the flashing lights and siren turned on, do not scare in the next row, but turn on the direction indicators and change, just making sure the maneuver is safe. A few extra seconds will not delay anyone much, but they will help to avoid an emergency.
