What clearance is needed in the city? When cornering, first of all, it is necessary to strictly follow the rules of the road, but you should not forget about the safety of your car. It happens that all the driver’s attention is focused on letting in vehicles and pedestrians (if traffic rules require it), and it’s extremely disappointing if he doesn’t notice how close he got to the curb. At the same time, the right threshold of the car often suffers: after all, with right-hand traffic adopted in our country, it is it that is located closest to the curb. And it is the right rear wheel that is most easily damaged for the same reason.

First, let me remind you why such a danger arises in general. This is due to the fact that the rear wheels of the car, when turning, move along a smaller radius, or, as they say, cut off the path. And both rear- and front-wheel drive cars do this. Only the loader behaves differently, in which the rear wheels are swivel.

Now let's see what border our car can catch on. The standard height of the protrusion of the curbstone above the road with normal deepening is 150-160 mm. If the thresholds of your car are lower, caution should be followed everywhere in the city. Although sometimes there are curb stones that protrude almost to full height (under 300 mm) - there will no longer be greetings on the thresholds of even large crossovers. And the junction of two curb stones or just a chipped edge can be sharp and therefore can damage the tire of any car. At the same time, different wheels behave differently: with low-profile rubber, destroy both the tire and the rim, and a chubby high-profile tire can save the disk from damage.

How to call on the curb so as not to damage the car? It is worth dividing the situation with the risk of grazing the border into two options. The first is a turn from a very narrow inter-quarter passage to a relatively wide street, and the second is a turn from a wide street to the right, into a narrow passage. In the first case, the only way not to get caught by the threshold or the rear wheel is to drive farther forward from the place of probable contact and only then start turning the steering wheel. Then the rear wheels will begin to cut the corner later and not touch the unfortunate border. When turning from the street, you, according to the Rules of the road, must "take the appropriate extreme position on the roadway in advance." Please note: not the end row, but the end position. This item works for your safety. After all, if you are standing with a large gap from the curb, there is a great risk that a cyclist, motorcyclist, or even a car will try to leak into the gap. And they will be right. They took the extreme right position on the roadway, so the problems with grazing the curb here stand up to their full height. You have to either pull the car forward, or use a different trick. Its essence is that just before the turn we turn the steering wheel a little to the other side of the turn, the trajectory deviates from the corner of the intersection. The threshold and rear wheel pass at a reasonable distance from the curb. At the same time, it is important to look in the rearview mirror in advance and make sure that you do not interfere with a passing car in the next row. Such a trajectory may come as a surprise to another driver.
