Actually, I always loved 412 more, although I was well aware that Moskvich 2140 is more perfect. But before the “fortieth” seemed somehow chopped off, having lost the lightness and swiftness of a very successful previous body. But now Moskvich 2140 seems quite harmonious and certainly pretty and dear. The point, of course, is not in him, but in me. He is still the same as in the year of his birth - 1976.
The main achievements of the Soviet family of the 1970s: albeit not a very large, but a separate apartment, a garden house on six hundred square meters, from the old memory, naively called the big name "dacha", a personal car and, of course, a garage for it, brick or at least metal. After all, it’s very difficult to realize that the machine, which they used to save for a long time, was occupied and which was cherished like a heirloom, is accessible to all winds and intruders!
No matter how ironic you are about the Soviet thesis about the "steady increase in the well-being of the Soviet people, " it really grew. True, not at all. The volume of production of cars in the USSR was noticeably lower than demand. For example, in 1976, when AZLK launched the Moskvich 2140 series, the total output of all the country's plants barely exceeded 1.2 million cars. And this is for 260 million citizens of the USSR! But in those years, the Union sent many cars for export - and the deficit was only growing.
The seventy-sixth year for the USSR was eventful. In February, the XXV Congress of the CPSU was held with the usual endless report of the Secretary General, sounding from all radios and televisions all day, and then repeated for very long periods in excerpts. In the same year, they exchanged a "bully" - dissident Vladimir Bukovsky - for Luis Corvalan, the leader of the Chilean communists. In 1976, a medal was established for the construction of the Baikal-Amur Railway. The grandiose construction of the BAM was in full swing.
Now it remains only to wonder how in one year it was possible to make so many good films that forever remained in the history of cinema. Here and “Twenty days without war” by Alexei German, and “Ascent” of Larisa Shepitko, and “Key without the right to transfer” Dinara Asanova … By the way, cinema has always turned out better than cars.
Nevertheless, for the Soviet automobile industry and motorists, the year 1976 is also a landmark. VAZ delighted customers with the Six, the most powerful, richly finished and, therefore, prestigious Togliatti machine, and AZLK finally launched the long-awaited Moskvich 2140 into production.

Moskvich 2140 was produced from 1976 to 1988. They were equipped with a 1.5 engine (75 hp), and some of the cars were equipped with a deformed 68 horsepower engine, designed for 76th gasoline. The gearbox is four-speed.
Main modifications: Moskvich 2137 station wagon, Moskvich 2734 van (only 4085 copies were made from 1976 to 1978), Moskvich 21403 - hand-operated for the disabled, Moskvich 21406 - the so-called rural one, with 68 horsepower engine, front drum brakes, engine sump protection and other tires, as well as Moskvich 2140 SL with a different exterior and interior trim.
In parallel, they made versions with the Moskvich 408 engine: Moskvich 2138 sedan, Moskvich 2136 station wagon, Moskvich 2733 van.

Buy Moskvich or Lada? Many Soviet citizens didn’t have such a choice - they took what came after a long line, the right to get into which was given to the leadership and party committees of enterprises. But, in fairness, if there was a choice, preference was usually given to the Lada. They are a bit more spacious, the “Zhiguli” stove heats perfectly even in the most severe frosts. And also - excellent dynamics for those times, good brakes, convenient and clear gear shifting. And most importantly - the Lada was reputed to be more reliable.
But Moskvich also had fans, albeit less numerous. Merits? A reliable engine that does not suffer, unlike VAZ's, from camshaft and oil seals, is also easy to maintain and maintain. No bore of cylinders and repair sizes of pistons during overhaul (the machines were then used for years - sometimes three generations of the same family)! Replaced sleeves, put new pistons - and drove off. With the correct, skillful adjustment of the ignition and carburetor 75, a strong Muscovite engine provided good dynamics, no worse than the Lada (at least with a 1.5 liter engine). True, the work of the Moskvich engine improved precisely with the advent of the Lada. Moscow cars, instead of the notorious Leningrad 126th carburetor, also received a much more perfect and reliable DAAZ, "in the girl's name" - Weber.

The weak point of Moskvich is the gearbox with traction control, which the car has inherited since the shift paddles. The lever stroke and the clarity of fixation against the background of the Lada were mediocre even with the timely replacement of the bushings of numerous drive connections. And the reliability of the Omsk box was frankly low.
But the mileage of the suspension elements is not worse than that of the Lada. Controllability? The rear spring suspension, of course, is archaic, but in fast bends Moskvich does not rearrange the “ass”, as Zhiguli did, especially with worn bushings of the rear suspension rods.
And how comfortable it is to sit! I am still wondering how good the fit in old Moskvich is. The seat compared to modern chairs, of course, is simple, but quite acceptable. Especially in combination with a well-thought-out pedal arrangement. The driver’s legs rest on them easily, without an unnatural “Zhiguli” bend.

For the model 2140, the Lenin Komsomol automobile plant went on for almost ten years. The undoubtedly successful Moskvich 408 body and the “four hundred and twelfth” motor turned the designers a little. For a long time, they tried to create a similar car at the factory, increasing the 412th in size, timidly changing the finish, trying a new gearbox that never became serial (not through the fault of the factory), as well as boosted engines. A truly new car was never created. And it was only in 1976 that the simply deeply modernized Moskvich 2140 appeared. The changes compared to 412 m were significant: Girling front disc brakes, a cooling system with a new thermostat (of course, “Zhiguli”) and without archaic blinds, a completely new interior. Only all this is very late.

For the USSR, such a car was quite acceptable, but the Muscovites practically lost their export positions. Model 2140 was sold abroad, to put it mildly, sluggishly. Even the luxury version of the 2140 SL, which appeared a few years later, did not arouse much interest among foreign buyers. In general, the last Moscow “classic” - Moskvich with rear-wheel drive was perceived ambiguously. But now I look at him with completely different eyes.
I definitely do not want to get out of the steering wheel! On an unloaded suburban highway, I even exceed the allowed speed and try not to drop it strongly in corners, so as not to hit the mud in front of the drivers of smart modern cars. Of course, the clarity of the steering is ironic, but with some experience you get used to it pretty quickly. As with the gear lever. No, you won’t wait - we with Moskvich will not become an obstacle to young car talents on a narrow winding highway!Moskvich 2140 Moskvich 2140 Related materials How Soviet cars were remade abroad: in a free translation
Boyhood, of course, but for this, probably, they get into the cars of youth. Instead of an air conditioner - a summer breeze from an open window, the wheezing of a small full-time receiver adds jazz notes to the song of an old, but quite healthy and peppy 75 horsepower engine.
More than forty years have passed since the debut of Moskvich 2140, and our value system has not changed: our own apartment, cottage, car. Of course, all these benefits have become different. However, old movies are still watched, albeit not on the huge screens of multi-screen cinemas, but in a more intimate setting.
In my opinion, having seen the species, but retained decent health (and without restoration) Moskvich 2140 - the same as these films, breeds. Out of date? I do not argue. Riding it now every day, especially in a big city, is inconvenient. But still there is something in this “fortieth” that evokes warm feelings, a slight sadness when parting, and a desire to see him as awake for many more years. Am I biased towards Moskvich? Of course! But I see nothing wrong with that.
Moskvich 2140 did not achieve such high-profile successes in international competitions as its predecessor Moskvich 412. Nevertheless, in the rally “forties” with 1.6 liter engines rated at 130–148 hp. (this version was officially homologated) still showed good results. The crew of V. Filimonov - M. Devel in 1984 at the Saturnus rally in Yugoslavia came seventh in the overall classification. A year later, in Finland, on the Rally of thousands of lakes, the same crew, becoming the best among the Soviet ones, took 26th place in the “absolute” and third place in its class. For riders in the Muscovites it was the highest achievement, not surpassed in the future.
