A new player is entering the Russian station wagon market - Lada Vesta SW and its off-road version of Vesta SW Cross, the production of which has been launched at the Izhevsk Automobile Plant. Dealers are already taking orders for them, and new items will go on sale until the end of October. The station wagon got the same power units that are installed on the Lada Vesta sedan: these are engines of 1.6 (106 hp) and 1.8 l (122 hp) paired with a 5-speed manual or a robotic transmission. The boot volume of the Lada Vesta SW has not changed compared to the sedan and amounts to 480 liters, however, with the second row seats folded, it increases already to 825 liters. It is also worth noting that the Cross version differs from the standard Vesta station wagon with an increased clearance of up to 203 mm, a plastic body kit and 17-inch alloy wheels.

Despite the lack of obvious competitors in the station wagon segment, the starting price tag for the Lada Vesta SW turned out to be quite reasonable - 639, 900 rubles. One can only hope that AvtoVAZ will keep this price even after the sales of new items begin to gain momentum. For comparison, the initial cost of a Vesta sedan looks, of course, more attractive - from 554, 900 rubles. However, for this money, the buyer will receive a car in a less equipped version of the Classic, which is not offered for the station wagon. If we compare the prices of the Vesta sedan and station wagon in similar trim levels, the difference will not be very significant - 32–42 thousand rubles. But the off-road station wagon Vesta SW Cross, available only in the Luxe version from 755, 900 rubles, in "full stuffing" can cost almost 100 thousand more than the Vesta sedan in the same equipment.

According to the marketing director of the Lada-Center Group Sergey Novoselsky, the rejection of the minimum configuration for the Lada Vesta SW is dictated by economic feasibility: production capacities are limited today, while Vesta sedans are not even in the most affordable trim levels in stable demand. Thus, AvtoVAZ gets the opportunity to sell more profitable cars, limiting the release of low-cost versions.

“The basic version of Lada Vesta is not equipped with air conditioning, which, of course, affects comfort. Station wagons without air conditioning are popular with companies purchasing cars for their fleet, but given the cost of the car itself and its spare parts, such buyers are more likely to choose Largus. We expect that Vesta station wagons are likely to be the most sought after with a manual gearbox and multimedia system. At least, it is with such equipment that buyers most often choose sedans of this model (about 60% of sales),”comments Igor Bader, Sales Director of Terra Auto Group of Companies.

As predicted at the Izhevsk Automobile Plant, the usual Lada Vesta station wagon and its cross-section version will be in approximately equal demand among customers. In turn, the Lada Center expects that a more effective and better equipped Cross-modification can occupy up to 65% of sales in megacities, while in small cities the ratio will be diametrically opposite.

According to Igor Bader, most of the cars sold by Terra Auto Group of Companies in St. Petersburg are bought by city dwellers, so the bulk of sales will inevitably come from a regular station wagon. Its ground clearance and electronic systems also allow you to use this car for outdoor activities. And, of course, a lower price and a wider selection of trim levels play a role in the final selection.

At AvtoVAZ they say that the newcomer has no obvious competitors in its class. Indeed, foreign cars in the segment of mass station wagons are represented by only a few models, and they belong to a higher C-class and are somewhat more expensive. So, the most popular foreign car in Russia with this body type - Kia cee'd SW - is offered from 900 thousand rubles. Its advantages compared with the new Vesta station wagon include a larger boot volume - 528 liters. The second most popular "foreigner with a backpack" - Ford Focus - is estimated at 926 thousand rubles. in the basic version.

According to Alexei Kuzmich, financial analyst at Avtomir Group of Companies, the rich configurations of the Kia cee'd SW and Ford Focus exceed the psychological mark of a million rubles, and some consumers opt for crossovers, and in the segment 700-800 thousand rubles. Vesta in the station wagon has no competitors in the market. In terms of positioning the model, the main competitors will be Lada XRAY and Renault Sandero.

Why overpay for a crossover

It is worth noting that in addition to the attractive price, the Lada Vesta SW compares favorably with competitors with a higher ground clearance even in the standard version (178 mm versus 150 mm for the Kia cee'd SW and 160 mm for the Ford Focus), which may become one of the determining factors of the purchase. But the obvious drawback of the VAZ novelty, of course, is the lack of a full-fledged automatic machine, which is available on foreign cars.

“Currently, AvtoVAZ offers complete sets with a mechanical gearbox or with a robotic transmission based on the manual gearbox. There are quite a lot of complaints about the latter from buyers in terms of comfort characteristics when switching, and there are also complaints about the low wear resistance of the clutch in this version. A complete set with an automatic machine is expected by the market and could significantly strengthen the position of the Lada Vesta SW model and the brand as a whole, but, unfortunately, AvtoVAZ does not have ready-made solutions for implementation, although plans for the installation and adaptation of automatic transmission from Renault-Nissan alliance partners are periodically voiced , - comments Alexey Kuzmich.

But Sergei Novoselsky believes that a full-fledged automatic machine could give an additional advantage to the Lada Vesta station wagon, but then the price gap between him and foreign cars would narrow, and this should not be allowed yet.

The most popular Lada Largus station wagon in Russia is also cheaper - from 530 thousand to 700 thousand rubles. (taking into account the Cross-version), but inferior to the new Vesta in terms of equipment and is equipped with weaker motors. At the same time, Largus wins in the volume of the trunk, which he has 560 liters. We also add that Largus and Kalina station wagon also have off-road modifications, characterized by increased ground clearance and a protective body kit.

According to Alexei Kuzmich, both Largus and Kalina are essentially outgoing models, which is confirmed by a gradual decrease in demand for them in recent years. Prices for the maximum configuration of these station wagons end at the level where prices for the new Vesta begin. At the same time, AvtoVAZ plans to start selling them with richly equipped versions in order to attract customers and demonstrate all the possibilities of new products.

In turn, consultant analyst Frost & Sullivan Ivan Kondratenko notes that the off-road version of the Vesta SW Cross will compete not only with station wagons, but also with SUVs, such as Hyundai Creta and Renault Kaptur. “Customers who dream of an SUV and have a limited budget can turn their attention to the Vesta SW Cross. The advantage of the Vesta station wagon is its rather rich basic equipment, even in comparison with a sedan of the same model,”says the expert.

In general, station wagons have never been in special demand among Russian motorists. In the best times of the domestic car market, the share of this segment barely reached 7.5%, and in recent years it has been steadily declining and today it is about 4%. In many respects this is facilitated by the growing popularity of crossovers, as well as the declining choice of station wagons themselves. Today, Russians are offered a little over a dozen models with this type of body, including niche premium cars.

It is not surprising that, unlike the more massive segments of crossovers and sedans, the AVTOVAZ models dominate the universal market. So, every second car sold with this type of body is Lada Largus, and together with the Kalina station wagon, their total share reaches 75%. The three best-selling foreign cars include Kia see'd SW (11% share), Ford Focus (6.5%) and Hyundai i40 (1.5%), while they are several times inferior in terms of sales of AvtoVAZ products. As for the latest model, dealers are now selling the latest copies of Korean station wagons due to the cessation of sales of the “forties” in our country. Hyundai is still silent about plans to launch other models with this body type on the Russian market.

According to Ivan Kondratenko, the low popularity of station wagons in the Russian market, coupled with the crisis of recent years, are demotivating automakers to promote this segment in our country. Even despite a fairly active recovery in total demand, there is no need to talk about the development potential of the universal segment: its share will remain at a stable current level of 4% - a maximum of 5%. At the same time, the segment of budget sedans and hatchbacks, as well as an actively growing class of crossovers, will show the most noticeable growth.

“In my opinion, the release of the Lada Vesta SW will not change the current market situation, but will only select potential buyers from current segment leaders such as Lada Largus or Kalina station wagon. At the same time, due to its novelty, richer equipment and attractive appearance, the Vesta station wagon has every chance to become a new bestseller in its segment, bypassing the already outdated Largus. However, this will depend primarily on a stable economic situation and preservation of at least part of the state support programs, since Vesta is still more expensive than Largus, and the buyer, as you know, votes with a wallet,”says Ivan Kondratenko.

In this regard, AvtoVAZ hopes for Lada Vesta SW, which should help it gain a foothold in the European market. Recall that a sedan of this model is already supplied to the Old World, and, as they say at AvtoVAZ, it is in good demand there. The new station wagon is expected to appear on the European market in the first half of 2018 after Euro-6 certification passes.

In terms of equipment and characteristics, Lada Vesta SW and Vesta SW Cross are the best that AvtoVAZ can offer to the European consumer today. However, since these models will be completely new to a European audience, one cannot count on an aggressive start and increased popularity, says Alexey Kuzmich. According to his estimates, the export volume of both models in 2018 will be 1200-1500 cars. Moreover, the popularity of new products in Europe will depend on the pricing policy of AvtoVAZ, as well as on government measures to stimulate the export of domestic cars.
