In ancient times, there was GOST 5170–73 "First-aid kits for repairing pneumatic tires." What components were not in these first-aid kits! And a fungus, and a grater with a band-aid, and a roller … And now each manufacturer decides for himself what to put in his own set.
Check what the descendants of those first-aid kits are capable of. The editorial Grant pushed for decisive action, one of the wheels of which gave up her breath. Instead of tire fitting, we visited several shops where we purchased 16 different sets for repairing tubeless tires. The spread in prices is sevenfold, although the principle of operation is the same. After finding a puncture, you need to remove the culprit of the trouble (self-tapping screw, nail), then expand the hole and firmly insert the folded rubber flagellum into it. The nuances of technology and tools may vary, but in general, the repair algorithm is just that.

Tire Pressure: Your Rate
Having repaired the tire, which a self-tapping screw met on the road, we decided to test all 16 repair kits on the poor thing. However, in the end they inflicted only 13 stabbing wounds, since three sets were rejected immediately: flagella in them are frankly bad, instantly torn in their hands.
Tools also vary quite a lot. So, the nice handle in the CityUp CA-793 set managed to turn around with the sting at the first attempt to get inside the tire.
Note that in some sets no “picks” are provided, and in some places there is no glue. And the names of the tools of almost all manufacturers are different - in the explanations we give precisely the “proprietary” option.
"Pickers" of different stripes. More convenient are those with a T-shaped handle. It is better if the working part has the appearance of a square rod twisted by a spiral. The diamond-knurled shaft is slightly worse, and very badly serrated - it breaks the cord. Ideally, the tool should simply push the strands apart. "Pickers" of different stripes. Harnesses in the left part are suitable, reinforced. But nothing good can be said about the other products: they are torn when you try to insert them into your ears. A tire with such a number of holes in the tread portion passed a run test at speeds of over a hundred for a couple of weeks, without losing a single drop of precious air. For the sake of the experiment, we did not even cut off a few tails - and everyone held on. A small puncture in the sidewall was also managed with a flagellum. Although the reliability of sealing is much lower than in the case when the tourniquet is held in a thick (even for a worn tire) tread layer.

The sidewall of the tire is easily pierced by an ordinary kitchen knife. A cut a half centimeter wide is, generally speaking, a sentence to the tire, but you need to get there! Instead of a “needle” for repairing the sidewall, it is better to use a conventional slotted screwdriver: it is easier to pull it out without risk of pulling the flagellum back. We decided to start four flagella at once to repair the side cut. Tightness restored. The flight is normal! On the first day, the tire withstood the ride at city speeds (up to 70 km / h) and did not lose pressure during the night. The next day we drove along faster roads - and, alas, after 18 km, the centrifugal forces overpowered. A bunch of flagella fell out, the pressure instantly dropped, and we, having moored to the side of the road, began to put a reserve. We do not recommend repeating! Is it dangerous! Toward the close of the curtain, they conducted another test - a kind of “household” one: they punched a sidewall of a tire like some bully with a knife or a screwdriver. We were no longer engaged in comparative tests, but simply fought for survivability. By the way, the same damage occurs, for example, during hard contact of the tire with the curb or the sharp edge of the pit. Such temporary repairs are a priori more difficult: the sidewall is thinner than the tread, and therefore the flagellum is harder to stay in the hole.

The most general recommendations are as follows: flagella should be thick and reinforced, the “picker” should not be too “toothy,” and glue is still necessary.
TUBELESS TIRE REPAIR ALGORITHMDetermine the puncture site. If the external examination does not help, immerse the wheel in water or, at worst, douse it with water to detect air bubbles. Sometimes for this you need to increase the pressure to 2-3 bar. Having found a puncture, we mark it. Pliers remove the culprit. We take the tool [1] for stripping and the hole (in vernacular - “pick”), install it in the puncture site and release the handle - we try to determine the puncture direction from the angle of inclination. We put a layer of glue on the surface of the “picker” (if it is present in the repair kit) and first screw it into the tire until it stops, then pull it out. The operation must be repeated two to three times. At the last pass, leave the tool in a recessed position. We take a tourniquet and install it in the awl’s eye (also called the “needle”). Apply glue to the surface of the tow. We take out the tool for stripping and forming and quickly drive the awl with a plait into the hole [2]. The ends of the harness must remain on the surface. We take out the awl - the harness should remain in the hole. The tire is the same, inside view [3]. Captured by a hidden camera … Inflate the wheel and check for leaks with water, or at least by ear. We trim the ends of the bundle protruding from the outside flush with the tread surface of the tire [4]. Everything, you can go! [five] |
