New model or deep restyling?
BMW 5 Series vs. Competitors: Who's Five? Despite the visual resemblance to its predecessor in the back of the F10, the “five” with the G30 index is really new. The sedan is based on the CLAR modular platform (classical architecture), which it shares with the current "seven".
Due to the widespread use of high-strength steels, aluminum and magnesium, the new "five" dropped 100 kg of curb weight. The suspension design remained the same, but the lower V-shaped rear wishbone was replaced with two separate ones. Now you can order the Integral Active Steering system, which steers in corners by turning the rear wheels up to three degrees.
How to distinguish the new "five" from its predecessor?
Very simple! Front - along the headlights “fused” with a radiator grill. Behind - by the absence of a characteristic step on the lanterns. In profile - along the “gills” in the front wings. See in our photo gallery.
How to distinguish the new "five" from the "seven"?
It is more complicated here, but only at first glance. Firstly, the corners of the headlamps of the seventh series are noticeably raised upwards, while the headlights of the "five" have a more restrained shape. Secondly, the “seven” side decorative trims extend from the aerodynamic holes in the front wings to the edge of the tailgate, while in the “five” everything is limited to short elements in the front wings. Finally, the taillights of the older model visually connect the characteristic chrome molding.

I believe that very soon the eye will learn to distinguish the fifth series from the seventh in size. Still, the difference in length is very noticeable.

Who is competing with?
As before, these are E-class business sedans. First of all - the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and the Volvo S90 that performed well in our recent comparative test. To a lesser extent - second-tier premium: Cadillac CTS, Jaguar XF, Lexus ES, Infiniti Q70 and Genesis G80.

The wheelbase of the new “five” is 2975 mm. This is 36 mm more than the Mercedes E-class, and 95 mm less than the long-base “seven”. In other words, there is enough space, but you won’t be able to cross your legs. The wheelbase of the new “five” is 2975 mm. How much is the new "five"?
If not on credit, then at least 2, 760, 000 rubles will be required to buy a new “five”. This is the starting price, paying which you get a 520d rear-wheel drive sedan with a 2.0-liter diesel engine (190 hp) and an 8-speed automatic. However, such a machine will already have everything you need: six airbags, dual-zone climate control, a leather interior and even full-time navigation.
A similar "five" with all-wheel drive (520d xDrive) will cost at least 2, 900, 000 rubles. More powerful gasoline versions are more expensive than three million rubles. And if you cram options with the top M550i xDrive, its price will soar far for 7 million rubles.
Cars that they want to get rid of as soon as possible
Is she really worth it?
Of course, there is no general answer to this question. Here, to each according to his capabilities and needs. In my opinion, a cool all-wheel drive “five” (at least diesel, at least gasoline) can be configured for 3.5 million rubles. And yes - this is a very reasonable price for one of the most advanced E-Class sedans. In addition, competitors from the "big German three" are not cheaper.
How does the "five" G30 go?
In a word - cool. I managed to ride a diesel 530d xDrive and 540i xDrive - and both left the most pleasant experience. The first accelerates to hundreds in 5.4 seconds. The second is still six tenths faster. For a business-class sedan, this is a fantastic result, so I don’t exclude that the majority of buyers will have enough of the capabilities of the 520d xDrive version, which spends 7.6 seconds on an exercise of 0-100 km / h.
Soundproofing? Enough so that you can’t distinguish the diesel version from the gasoline one by sound or vibration. And in terms of chassis, the “five” is a clear leader in its class. Not only gambling handling is surprising, but also the fact that it is combined with a very decent ride.

Should I order an "autopilot"?
In the configurator, this thing is hiding under the sign "Driving Assistant Plus" and is estimated at 238, 300 rubles. My advice is to spend this money on something else, because the “autopilot” in its current form is worthless. Yes, he really fulfills all the stated responsibilities. Sometimes. So much so that no sane person will trust him. For example, you won’t be able to catch the moment when the car stops following the markings and “falls out” of the strip. However, the same can be said about the Mercedes-Benz E-Class.
