Capitals versus regions: where is it more profitable to buy cars?
The preferences of the residents of the capital differ significantly from the all-Russian ones due to the higher incomes of Muscovites in comparison with the regions. This conclusion was reached by analysts of PwC and Avito Auto, who compared the brand structure of the secondary car market in the regions. So, used cars of some brands are sold in Moscow much better than outside the Moscow Ring Road, and vice versa. For example, used cars of the Lada, GAZ and UAZ brands are not in special demand among metropolitan buyers - their share in the total sales volume is less than 12%. But in the outback, domestic cars occupy 35% of the secondary car market.
According to Avito Auto experts, the capital's fleet of domestic cars with less-than-used mileage: in Moscow, the products of the Russian automobile industry are more often sent for recycling, while in the regions it continues to be used. At the same time, AvtoVAZ products remain the sales leader, although every tenth used car has a boat on the radiator grill in Moscow, and every third in Russia as a whole.
According to the director of the PodborAvto company Denis Eremenko, the popularity of second-hand Lada and UAZ vehicles in Russian regions is explained by their cheapness, as many of our fellow citizens, unlike Muscovites, simply cannot afford other cars. In addition, the availability of after-sales service and spare parts plays in favor of the Russian automobile industry. According to the expert, "domestic cars can be repaired in any village."

By the way, Lada’s leadership on the secondary in Moscow is also largely provided by the residents of the regions. According to analysts, more than a third of used cars bought in the capital leave for various parts of our country.
“The Moscow region has traditionally been and remains a“used car factory “for the country. Do we find many domestic cars on the streets of Moscow? Not. If it may seem to someone that I am mistaken, go to Ufa or Samara and feel the difference. Basically, in Moscow this is either a new lineup, or quite old “masterpieces” loaded with watermelons or building materials. One way or another, but the majority of domestic cars in Moscow and Moscow Region are gaining a new owner in other regions,”says Artem Samorodov, director of used car sales department at AvtoSpetsTsentr Group.
Cheap show-offs
However, foreign cars with mileage metropolitan buyers choose other than residents of the regions. As you know, Toyota cars, whose share exceeds 13% in total sales, are traditionally the most popular on the secondary market. But in Moscow, Mercedes-Benz is leading with a share of 7.4%, the second line is shared by BMW and Toyota, which occupy 6.5% of the market. In general, the share of the premium segment in the secondary car market of Moscow is more than two times higher than in the outback - 28% against 12%.
According to Roman Abramov, CarPrice product director, Toyota has earned great respect in all cities of Russia, especially in the Urals, Siberia and the eastern regions of the country. People characterize Toyota cars as a standard of reliability and adaptability to Russian realities among foreign cars. In Moscow and St. Petersburg, another factor comes to the fore - prestige. As soon as a person has enough money to transfer to a fresh Mercedes-Benz or BMW, he, as a rule, is no longer ready to change these feelings for something utilitarian, even if it is more reliable. In general, the share of foreign cars, and especially the premium segment, in Moscow is much higher than in the regions, as residents of the capital can afford to buy more expensive cars.
It contributes to the high demand for used premium and the gradual increase in the share of the dealer segment in the metropolitan market of used cars. According to experts of Avito Auto, this allows motorists to purchase premium cars at a more affordable price and with certain guarantees.
Why is there an SUV in the capital?
The brand structure of the secondary car market in Moscow and the Russian regions also affects the share of deals with used cars by class. So, in Russia, in general, B- and C-class cars are most in demand (their share is 67%), while in the capital they occupy less than half of the market (49%). But the share of middle and business class cars here, on the contrary, is much higher - 18% against 10% in the regions. Thus, in Moscow there is a more uniform distribution of transactions by class.

“The bias towards the B- and C-class in the regions is due to the fact that the majority of low-cost cars, as well as domestic ones, are concentrated in these segments. That is, distribution by classes is, rather, not the desired choice of people, but financial capabilities and choice of brands, respectively,”says Roman Abramov.
