New energy

Leaving a Beijing hotel for a bus to get to the world's largest automobile exhibition, I almost fell under a scooter rushing along a bicycle path. He flew, almost silently rustling tires on the asphalt. Neither you nadding cod of a two-stroke engine, nor a gray haze from the exhaust pipe. The scooter turned out to be electric. But they warned me that in Chinese cities, after the corresponding prohibitions and restrictions, there were no scooters, no cycle equipment with mellow motors. Keep your eyes open!

The Beijing auto show completely convinced me that clouds were gathering over the internal combustion engines in the Middle Kingdom. Of the 1, 179 cars presented at the passenger compartment, 147 are electric: one in eight!

Electric cars are actively coming not only at exhibitions. In 2013, the Chinese purchased 17, 500 electric vehicles. In 2014, it was already 83, 900. And last year, 254, 693 pure electric vehicles and another 85, 778 rechargeable hybrids were sold. The term "new energy car" has come into use.

The state will help

There are three reasons for the explosive interest in electric vehicles. The first is the improvement of technology: the range is increased, the charging time is reduced. So, the vast majority of electric cars of the Beijing Auto China exhibition declared the ability to drive at least 300 kilometers on a fully charged battery. The leader of the Chinese and, I note, global electric vehicle manufacturing company BYD introduced an updated BYD e6 model that overcomes 400 kilometers on a single charge, which is comparable to the mileage of an ordinary car with a full fuel tank.

The second is the unprecedented spread of digital technologies and the demand for them. And the "figure" is electronics. It is no coincidence that such innovative giants as the American Apple and Google, as well as the Chinese company LeEco, who selected them, are trying their hand at creating electric vehicles.

The third and, perhaps, the main reason for the spread of electric cars is state support. By developing electric transport, the government is trying to reduce automotive fuel consumption and reduce China’s dependence on oil imports, more than half of which is imported from the countries of the Near and Middle East, Angola and Russia. The state expects to use electricity to solve the environmental and transport problems of urban agglomerations.

In large cities, car sharing is rapidly developing, for which electric cars are ideally suited. The idea of using a car without burdening itself with the problems of parking, maintenance, parking, and so on, takes hold of the minds of an increasing number of Chinese. Why not use it if the hour of renting an electric car, for example, in Wuhu costs 15 yuan ($ 2.3), and 65 yuan ($ 10) a day? Micro cars are used as rolling cars. According to Chinese experts, the annual increase in the rental fleet of electric vehicles can be up to 80%. Along with Chinese distributors, foreign ones are also included in the process. Recently, German company car2go, owned by Daimler, has offered its services in Chongqing - we are talking about 400 Smart electric vehicles.

To stimulate sales of electric vehicles, the state compensates the owner from 31, 500 to 54, 000 yuan ($ 4850-7460) per car, depending on its class and region. Municipal authorities are actively involved in the construction of fast charging stations. It is noteworthy that in most cases, charging is free.

The state sets the challenge for automakers to switch to environmentally friendly cars in a fairly short time. This is how Geely, one of the leaders in the Chinese market, interpreted recommendations from above. At the presentation of the first electric car Emgrand EV, the Blue Geely program was announced, according to which by 2020, 90% of its cars will be converted to new energy. In particular, the first paragraph of the program states that the company is ready to overfulfill government directives to increase the fuel economy of engines and bring the average fuel consumption in the model range to 5 l / 100 km. The obligations under the second paragraph state that Geely plans to reduce the cost of production of rechargeable hybrids and make them comparable in price to ordinary cars. The company also plans to actively engage in hydrogen cells and metals.

So, after 2020, the Geely production program will have three types of cars: all-electric, rechargeable hybrid and fuel cell. Rechargeable hybrids and fuel cell electric vehicles will make up 65% of the total output, the remaining 35% will be electric vehicles. That's it, traditional cars only with a diesel or gasoline engine are not talking!

It is impossible to look into the plans of each Chinese company, but the general direction of development, I think, is understandable.

Geely is also working on energy efficiency. In 2018, she plans to bring mileage on one charge to 400 km with an average consumption of 13 kWh per hundred, and then to 500 km with a consumption of 8 kWh per 100 km.

What China will go to the future: a big jump in tension

The Chinese automobile industry is clearly divided into two camps - purely its own production and joint with foreigners. It is difficult to draw a watershed line. According to various estimates, the national industry itself accounts for about 44%, the rest is production mixed in different proportions with foreign. Among foreign ones, the most active are German brands that came to China in the late 70s: they own 22.5% of the market.

Volkswagen Group's joint ventures produce about 3.8 million cars a year. Foreigners have to follow the line of the Chinese leadership. And, despite the diesel gates, in China they are working on new-energy cars. Together, Beijing is creating a car center of the future, aimed at new fuel technologies and the integration of the car into the World Wide Web. By 2020, they promise to develop fifteen local products using new energy. It is no coincidence that Johem Heitzmann, the head of the Chinese division of the Volkswagen Group, says that in China "the future is coming now."

Foreigners who do not work together with the Chinese have a hard time, even if they are high-tech companies. Tesla, for example, halved sales plans this year (to 5, 000 units). Its electric cars do not appear in the list of state support programs, which is provided to national manufacturers. Americans have to work independently to create their own charging network.

Among all countries, China is most focused on advanced automotive technology. By 2020, sales of cars using new energy will grow to five million. The dragon liked the taste of electricity.

CARS AND CHINA

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, last year 21.1 million cars were sold in China. This is a quarter of world sales, the largest market in the world! 17.4 million vehicles sold in the United States.
