As it turned out, the palm in this sad list of the main causes of fatal accidents does not belong to exceeding the speed limit. Although the fault of reckless people confusing public roads with racetracks, 13.9% of fatal accidents occur. And not even to the daredevils, who believe that only cowards are braking at the entrance to the turn, and 15.9% are gaining such. The greatest danger on the roads is represented by drivers with poor driving skills, unable to adequately assess the situation, predict maneuvers of other road users, and make lightning decisions. 65% of accidents, according to experts, occur precisely for this complex reason. Moreover, the main culprits of the accident are not newly-made graduates of driving schools, on the machines of which the “Beginner driver” sign flaunts. Yes, they often test the patience of other participants in the movement with their uncertain behavior and turtle speed, but their contribution to the overall sad statistics is only 5.3%.

The traffic police claims that all accident rates have decreased

Drivers who have already acquired experience, but not professionalism, are much more dangerous on the roads. They are sincerely sure that their driving is impeccable, the car is invulnerable, the road is created exclusively for them, and everything else - road signs, signs, other cars and pedestrians - only gets in the way under the wheels, poisoning the trip. And as a result of this illusory experience, implicated in arrogance and disrespect for others - 23% of fatal accidents. Of these, 17% account for unreasonable self-confidence and excessive rush, 2.8% for aggressive driving, 2.1% for inattention or complete disregard of signs.

Not a smaller share of accidents (up to 20% of all cases) is associated with the scattered attention of the driver. This happens either because of trivial stupidities - chatter with passengers (2.6%), phone calls (0.8%), freezing in social networks or selfies of a loved one while driving - or because of criminal irresponsibility (driving in a state of alcohol or drug intoxication - 9.6% of cases). A couple of glasses of wine or glasses that are stronger than that cannot prevent an experienced driver from driving safely, says almost a third of people. In addition, many are somehow convinced that driving under the influence of drugs is safer than drunk.

To dispel this myth, which is especially popular among young people, Ford developed a special suit in 2015 that imitates the physical condition of a drug addict driver. More precisely, she finalized the “alcoholic costume,” which she introduced a year earlier. It consists of weight pads on the lower leg and wrist; fettering the movement of knee pads and elbow pieces; cervical corset, preventing the rotation of the head; points that recreate the effect of tunnel vision and erode its clarity due to the multi-colored bulbs constantly blinking right in front of their eyes; headphones that reproduce random distracting sounds; and bracelet gloves that provoke involuntary and uncontrolled hand tremors. None of the subjects in this unusual suit was able to correctly perform the simplest exercises on the circuit. Now, driving in a “drunken suit” has become an indispensable part of the Ford Driver Driving Skills Training Program.

In Russia, unfortunately, one of the main causes of accidents the traffic police call the poor condition of the roads. Over 40% of accidents in our country are due to this all-Russian disaster, caused again by the human factor.

In addition to these causes of traffic accidents, there are at least four factors little known to most people that cause accidents on the roads. Maybe their overall contribution to the bloody statistics is not so great, but still you need to know about them so as not to fall as their accidental victim.

Factor 1: dehydration

In 2015, English scientists from Loughborough University, in collaboration with specialists from the European Institute of Hydration (EHI) completed a study on the topic of “Dehydration and Driving”. According to the results of their work, they proved that a driver in the body, whose amount of water fell below the physiological norm, is just as dangerous while driving as a driver with a blood alcohol content of 0.8 g / l. It turned out that water deficiency along with alcohol intoxication reduces the reaction and concentration. And the higher the overall degree of dehydration, the more mistakes a person who drives a car makes. This problem is especially typical for the hot summer months, when a person, intensively losing moisture, often just forgets to replenish it. In addition, many drivers, setting off on a long trip, deliberately limit themselves to drinking in order to reduce the number of stops on the way.

Conclusion of scientists: the constant companion of any motorist on the road as a guarantee of safety for everyone in the car should always be a bottle of drinking water. And here are the recommendations:

  • Before a long trip, do not forget to replenish the body's water supply.
  • Stop every two hours on the road to stretch your legs and drink a glass of water or another soft drink.
  • Do not endure thirst, drink immediately, as soon as the body asks for it.
  • If you feel tired, drink a caffeinated drink, because it is well known that caffeine increases mental and physical performance and eliminates drowsiness.
  • Pay attention to the color of urine - if it is light yellow in color, then the body’s water supply is normal, if it has acquired dark shades, then this is a signal of possible dehydration. This recommendation does not apply to people with certain medical conditions. By the way, in some southern countries, for example, in Australia, in public toilets, as a reminder, there are signs that show what color of urine, what degree of dehydration or its absence corresponds to.
  • Do not abuse air conditioning on the road. A long stay in a car with the air conditioner on significantly increases the water shortage for the driver and passengers.

The consequences of dehydration:

  • the loss of 1-2% of the total water in the body significantly reduces physical and cognitive abilities, can disrupt the function of thermoregulation and lead to cardiovascular problems.
  • the loss of 4% of water causes headache, drowsiness, fatigue, and disturbs concentration.
  • the loss of 10% of water leads to painful disorders.
  • the loss of 20–25% of water is fatal to humans.
  • Factor 2: car body color

Australian scientists from Monash University found that black cars most often get into accidents. They issued their verdict by analyzing data on 850 thousand accidents that occurred on the Green Continent in several years. For the purity of the experiment, traffic accidents involving commercial vehicles, as well as taxis and white vans, were not taken into consideration. According to the results of painstaking calculations, black cars by their emergency hazard won a landslide victory, being out of competition. The second place went to gray and silver cars. Red and blue “swallows” closed the sad three. The safest were unconditionally recognized white cars, with a slight margin they were followed by golden and yellow. Researchers also suggested that orange vehicles could give odds to white, but they failed to collect factual information to scientifically confirm this hypothesis - the color of an orange is not an honor on the roads.

It is interesting that in the afternoon the accident rate of black cars overtakes whites by only 12%, but at dawn or at dusk this figure jumps to 47%. The thing, according to scientists, is the degree of distinguishability of colors in different lighting conditions. After conducting a series of experiments, they were convinced that the lower the visibility coefficient of a particular color compared to white, the higher the likelihood of an emergency.

Some experts argue that if the bumpers of all cars were painted white, this would significantly reduce the accident rate. It would seem cheap and cheerful. But you must admit: who will let you decorate your four-wheeled miracle in this way?
