The new Logan (as well as the new Sandero) has blocks of a different size, and their selection is still meager. The Nissan Almera sedan and the Lada Largus station wagon also have brake parts that are also original, not interchangeable with those used on Logans of the first and second generations, although the cars are created on the same platform.

After a shopping trip, it turned out that the most expensive pads are offered by spare parts departments at Renault branded service stations - it is clear that the officers recommend putting them in particular. And we bought a kit for 1300 rubles. At the same time, we bought the same brake discs, also branded, at 3900 rubles per pair - with each set of pads new disks will work for us. Recall, by the way, that depending on the configuration, both ventilated and non-ventilated disks were installed on Logans. We purchased non-ventilated - regular for our eight-valve machine.

Other pads were chosen for reasons of maximum price dispersion - they paid only 200 rubles for the cheapest. As a result, there were five sets. You could buy more, but our goal is not to give an assessment to all the pads that are now on the counter - it is too long and troublesome. More important are the general principles: is there any point in giving money for expensive branded pads and is it dangerous to put the cheapest on a car?

There are two ways to test brake pads: in the laboratory on a special stand and directly on the car. Bench tests are good in absolute repeatability of loads and, accordingly, more accurate measurements. You can simulate various cycles - urban (acceleration / deceleration), mountain, deceleration from high speeds. Since the mass of the flywheel on which the brake disc is mounted, the deceleration and the force in the hydraulic drive that compresses the pads is known, the friction coefficient of the pair of the disc – block can be precisely calculated, namely, it is one of the main evaluation parameters.

Tests on a car give less accurate results in each particular race (for example, deceleration can vary, because it also depends on the speed of pressing the pedal), but the good thing is that the brake pair works in real conditions - both in terms of loads and cooling.

We developed the test procedure together with the specialists of NITSIAMT US based on the UNECE Rules - and set off on the roads of the Dmitrovsky test site. To get the most correct results and exclude the influence of “side” factors on them, we took Logan without ABS and turned off the rear brake circuit - in order to brake only the “front end”. And we will measure the deceleration, braking distance and wear of the pads.

We start by measuring the thickness of the discs and the thickness of each block at four control points. Then we run the blocks using a special technique: the car travels about 30 km with a series of brakes of different intensities. During the break-in period, we determine the force on the pedals at which the front wheels are locked. This is a very important indicator: the higher the force, the worse the pads rub against the disks. And since the disks are the same and new for each pair of pads, this parameter already characterizes the quality of the products.

Each set of pads passed the so-called cold and hot tests. Cold are carried out at a temperature of disks not above 100 ºС. The driver brakes with an effort on the pedals of 10-12 kgf from a speed of 70 km / h and to a complete stop. After each braking, the temperature of the discs is measured, and then the driver makes an unhurried "lap of honor" to cool the brake mechanisms. In fact, this is an imitation of one-time braking - the basis of the basics, a basic test that allows you to determine the frictional properties of a pair of block - disk. To do this, with the help of measuring equipment, the deceleration and braking distance are recorded.

But the main load on the brake mechanisms lies with a series of intensive braking - when the disc and pads are heated far beyond 300 ºС. A classic example of life is the movement in the summertime along a mountain road, when you have to slow down in almost every turn.

To simulate severe temperature conditions and evenly warm up brake pairs, the test driver conducts a series of fifteen braking from 70 to 35 km / h on the verge of wheel lock. We fix the deceleration and braking distance, and after the second control braking - also the temperature.

After completing the test cycle, we again measure the thickness of the pads and discs. Since the disks practically did not wear out during all the races (the thickness remained within 12 ± 0.04 mm), in the table we indicate only the results of measuring the thickness of the pads.

WHEN THE SMOKE BROWNED

The result of our tests is unequivocal: the best, were the branded, most expensive pads. They will work stably under the most severe loads. How long? Explicitly longer than outbred counterparts. Of course, for about the same money, you can buy pads from other well-known manufacturers, and not only the brand is important, but the confidence that you are not buying a fake.

We started with pads that can only be distinguished from branded ones by a very experienced eye. Packaging - one to one! Only an experienced log-in driver will notice: the edges of the cutouts in the lower part of the shoe are even for branded products, and for these with a slight bevel.

To achieve wheel lock after running-in, the driver had to put pressure on the pedal with an effort of 100 kgf! And this is an indirect indicator of quality: the faster the force decreases, at which the wheels lock, the faster and better the pads roll. Alas, it does not smell like quality here.

In cold tests, the stopping distance was from 41 to 48 m. This result can be considered quite good only against the background of those shown by failure sets. In addition, the scatter of the results is great. And the best pads are those that work stably at different temperatures.

In hot trials, these pads completely “floated” (although after the second braking, the discs warmed less than with some other pads - up to 320–360 ºС): the braking distance relative to the longest “cold” one increased by 12–17 m and reached 60–65 m. Very bad! After testing, the edges of the pads noticeably crumbled, the thickness decreased by 0.8–1.0 mm. But still the pads remained in working condition.

EVALUATION. We forcedly awarded the second place to these pads - only because the three sets turned out to be much worse. Pads are acceptable only for a quiet ride, without high loads.

Break-in was easier: the effort on the pedals at the first wheel lock was 70 kgf. During cold tests, the braking distance decreased by 7–11 m. The deceleration, respectively, increased markedly. And, most importantly, the measurement results were stable.

“Hot” also worked well, and in the best race the braking distance was 36 m - this is an absolute test record. Moreover, the indicators differ little from the "cold". It should be so!

In a competition for beauty, this box would take first place - they even drew the French flag. But the price is suspiciously not "French." Like the results. The first braking before locking required the driver to force “on foot” under 100 kgf. But it quickly decreased, so the pads are rolling well.

The braking distance with cold discs was close to that shown by the branded pads!

But stability is not enough: the scatter of the results was almost 8 m.

Hot pads also worked well: the braking distance was just over 40 m. Wear after testing was small: 0.2-0.7 mm. However, the crumbling of friction pads from heating is very noticeable: on one of the pads, the pad crumbled into pieces!

EVALUATION. Third place, because there were worse pads.

Just a surprise: the pads were thicker than necessary - the thinnest 0.3 mm thicker than the thickest of the rest of the sets. The support stubbornly refused to sit down. I had to remove the thermal liners, finally exposing the paint applied to the non-working side of the products. Will there be something?

During the break-in, the pads worked very unstably. The force at which the wheels were locked constantly floated - the spread was about 30 kgf!

During the cold measurements, they put a deuce both for the stability of the results and for the braking distance (50–55 m). Slowdown is slightly less than 4 m / s².

When, after a series of braking, in order to heat the discs, they stopped to measure the temperature, the thermometer showed 337–377 ºС, which was not even record in comparison with the previous sets, and the paint on the blocks flashed a bright flame! Surprisingly, the braking distance “to the hot” is not the worst: about 44 m. Depreciation is also small.

However, you cannot ride with such pads: they began to collapse!

EVALUATION. They are practically unsuitable for operation, although they are twice as expensive as the previous ones. Fourth place.

We made inquiries on the Internet for a long time, but could not understand that these were STK products or fakes. When running in, the brakes worked unstably. But the main thing started later. Slowdown to “cold” - less than 4 m / s². The braking distance was not less than 49.5 m and was very unstable from braking to braking: the spread - 9 m!

When measuring the temperature before the control hot braking pads to the delight of the photographer burned more than the previous ones! They warmed up more strongly than the others - up to 450–487 ºС. And the fact that the braking distance with heated brakes decreased by 11 m and the deceleration increased by almost 2 m / s² can hardly serve as a consolation. The pads actually collapsed. And therefore, reducing the thickness of the pads on a record 1.5–2.0 mm is no longer important.
