Take care of children

The Excellence Child Safety Seat Concept

Volvo Cars is rightfully considered one of the world leaders in automotive safety. In the summer of 2015, brand designers demonstrated an original solution for transporting children in a car. The Excellence Child Seat Concept child seat is attached to a special catwalk located in place of the front passenger seat in the opposite direction of travel. Firstly, this method of transporting children is considered the safest, and secondly, the child is constantly in the field of view and reach of the passenger in the back seat and the driver. The chair is adjustable in sitting and lying positions, it is also equipped with a swivel mechanism and, if necessary, easily rotates, allowing you to easily seat and remove the baby from the chair. On the sides of the seat there are pockets for various small items: bottles, napkins, etc., behind the chair there is a niche for storing small items, and under it there is a compartment where larger things will fit - diapers, blankets. In addition, in the space between the front panel and the seat, a bulk bag will calmly stand. The baby food bottle can be heated in a cup holder.

Safe overtaking

Overtaking trucks on an oncoming lane is often fraught with danger. Long vehicles completely block the view for drivers of cars moving behind them. To minimize the risks of such a maneuver, Samsung has developed a prototype video system called Safety Truck ("Safe Truck"). It includes video cameras that are installed on the cab of the long meter, and a large LCD screen consisting of four monitors that are attached to the rear door of the machine. The task of the video panel is to continuously, efficiently and without glare, regardless of the time of day or weather conditions, project everything that happens on the road in front of the truck. Samsung has already successfully tested a 20-ton truck equipped with Safety Truck on Argentinean roads. The inventors are sure that their development will not only simplify overtaking for drivers, but also help to reduce the number of accidents caused by sudden sharp braking of vehicles in front due to unexpected obstacles, for example, animals appearing on the road.

Fighting the glaze “in the green”

In recent years, the fight against snow and ice on winter roads using green de-icers has become increasingly popular. Scientists from the University of Washington (Seattle, USA) made their contribution to this environmental movement. They suggested sprinkling snow on slippery highways with the help of barley waste generated in vodka factories, mixing them with a small amount of salt. Usually, this by-product of production is scattered on the farm fields as fertilizer, converted into low-grade animal feed or simply thrown away. According to experts, the new method, which has already been successfully tested in Alaska, is practically environmentally friendly when compared with traditional sand and salt mixtures and chemical reagents that cause enormous damage to vegetation, groundwater, road surfaces and cars themselves. In addition, it is significantly cheaper. In other US states, roads are salted with the addition of beet, tomato and potato juices, as well as cheese production brine as “green” anti-icing agents. All these products are also production waste.

Scientists from the University of Missouri Science and Technology (Roll, Missouri) have developed high-strength steel of the third generation, which also has plasticity. It is lighter than traditional alloys used in the automotive industry, which will reduce the total weight of vehicles, which means lower fuel consumption and ultimately reduce emissions of harmful substances into the atmosphere. At the same time, the impact resistance characteristics of innovative steel, which are so important for automakers, meet all safety requirements. Currently, most modern cars and trucks are made of so-called first-generation steel. Unfortunately, the steel of the second generation, despite the fact that it surpasses its predecessor in all respects, has not received wide distribution. Its production was a very complex and expensive process. Novelty is devoid of all these shortcomings. Now, scientists, together with specialists from major US metallurgical enterprises, are testing the technology for manufacturing an innovative alloy on an industrial scale.

Stay away from trains

Railroad crossing sign in small town

According to the US Federal Railways Administration (FRA), Google soon promises to give a good present to all motorists. The search engine intends to enter all the railway crossings of the country into the database of its cartographic applications for smartphones and teach the navigation system to warn drivers in advance of approaching them using visual and sound signals. In total, today in the United States there are about 250 thousand state and private railway crossings, which, according to statistics, annually take the lives of hundreds of people. So, the death toll in 2014 reached 270 people. The official launch date for the new feature has not yet been announced, but it is noted that this task is among the priorities for Google. FRA representatives hope that, for example, Google will be followed by other manufacturers of GPS-systems: MapQuest, TomTom, Garmin and Apple. Similar assistance would be very useful for Russian drivers. High accident rate at railway crossings, especially unregulated ones, unfortunately, did not pass by our country either.

Glove box on guard of the knees

The legendary sixth generation Ford Mustang has been equipped with an innovative front passenger knee airbag. The Americans for the first time mounted a device to protect their knees, not in the lower part of the front panel under the glove compartment, but in the glove box door itself, which is made not of textile fabric, but of plastic. The airbag is so compact that it does not take up free space at the feet. With a length of 46 cm and a width of 28 cm, it weighs 65% less than its counterparts, which does not affect the characteristics of the efficiency and reliability of operation. In the event of a collision, the tiny gas generator inside the glove compartment door inflates a plastic bubble in just 20 milliseconds and pushes the outer lid of the glove compartment door forward to soften the knee. In the process of working on a new airbag, Ford engineers have patented 23 inventions.

Confident turn

At the 66th Frankfurt International Motor Show, Bosch introduced a turn-by-turn turn assist. The new technology will help drivers make the dangerous maneuver more confidently, relying not only on their own eye and intuition, but also on the car’s instruments. Now, two sensors mounted in front of the car will be responsible for measuring the correct distance to an approaching vehicle. They will continuously monitor the oncoming traffic flow, determining whether there is enough free space between the machines. If, according to the data of the instruments, the length of the gaps in the stream does not allow confidently crossing the oncoming traffic lanes, the turn assistant will not allow the car to start moving, and in case of an emergency collision threat, it will immediately stop turning with the help of an automatic emergency braking system.

Yamam - a fight

How many cars were damaged by potholes on the roads, how many accidents were due to their fault! A third of motorways in the USA and a quarter in the UK are recognized as potentially dangerous because of them. But it seems that the drivers from Boston were lucky. A total war on the pits on the roads was declared by engineers from the local Northeastern University. In the test mode, the smart van created by scientists began plying the streets of the capital of Massachusetts, the task of which is to identify not only obvious defects in the roadway, but also those that are not even visible, but are just emerging in the bowels of the asphalt pavement. An unusual car is equipped with sensors that record tire pressure changes when driving on bumps. The toolkit also has a microphone recording road noise and a video camera recording problem areas. In addition, it is equipped with special laser sensors and a scanning radar device that detects air pockets under the carriageway. All received information flows into a computer center located in a van, where a detailed color map of city streets is compiled. Color coding allows not only timely tidying up collapsing road sections, but also helps to evaluate in advance how much the upcoming repair will cost. Scientists have plans to install similar systems on all cars.

Counterfeit protection

Counterfeit auto parts are sweeping the market. They not only undermine the reputation of the original manufacturers, but also disable cars at the most inopportune moment. So, they pose a potential threat to the life and health of drivers and passengers. Scientists from the Leibniz Institute of New Materials proposed their own method of protection against counterfeiting. They developed a glass-like material based on silicates, from which a completely new kind of hologram structures can be made that can easily withstand intense loads and temperatures up to 500 degrees Celsius. The innovative hologram is also covered with a layer of another glassy substance, which, having a high refractive index, makes the brand marking easy to read even if it is very dirty. But most importantly, according to German material scientists, such a hologram will be very difficult to fake.
