In an era of rapid development of high technologies, when manufacturers instantly respond to every sneezing user, car DVRs lose the status of silent on-board security cameras that simply record everything that happens on the route. The most advanced devices of this type have actually turned into miniature high-tech systems. Many of them act not only as video fixation devices, but also in tandem with GPS receivers, they perform the functions of preventive notification of drivers. The shooting technique has also changed significantly. As a rule, registrars try to use complex systems of several optical lenses and use high-speed computer processing of streaming video.

These trends are especially evident in the latest modifications of car recorders, in which developers use powerful high-performance processors of the latest generation. In particular, Ambarella A7LA, namely the modification Ambarella A7LA50D, used in almost all devices from our test: Street Storm CVR-A7510, Sho-Me A7–90FHD, Playme Back, Neoline Wide S50 and CARCAM Q7. An exception is the ParkCity DVR HD 750 model, which uses the latest Ambarella A7LA processor with an index of 70. What are its features and advantages, we will tell later, but for now, we note that all acquired samples are capable of shooting with an ultra-high (in Super High Definition format - Super HD) with a resolution of 2304x1296 pixels, previously inaccessible to such devices. Recall that in the majority of registrars, the maximum resolution mode corresponds to the Full HD format (1920 × 1080 pixels).

The device showed the best results in dynamic as well as static shooting, providing high-quality rendering of license plate elements from a fixed distance. In many ways, these qualities are achieved through the use of a new generation processor Ambarella A7LA70. Among other advantages - a moderate price, a built-in battery of 240 mAh, the widest (among other test participants) camera viewing angle. As for the minuses, here we would note a rather bulky plug of the power cable. In cars with a “deep low” location of the cigarette lighter socket (for example, in the gearbox console), installing a plug may not always be convenient.

Super vs Full

In addition to the Super HD mode, all samples have highly sensitive sensor matrices of large "dimension" - 3.5 or 4.0 megapixels. This combination allowed developers to provide high-resolution images and better detail of its fragments, and at the same time to implement a number of additional functions in some models, for example, conducting high-speed (40-60 f / s) video recording, however, only in Full HD mode. Well, that’s pretty good too! After all, the above listed features of Super HD recorders should give users some advantages over Full HD models, especially since the price of "super" is much higher. And in order to better understand this, during the test we set ourselves two main tasks. The first is to compare the quality of Super HD and Full HD recordings made using different recorders from the same distance. The second is to conduct a comparative assessment of Super HD-tracks with Full HD-records made by different recorders in high-speed shooting mode.

This device appeared on our market quite recently and immediately attracted the attention of numerous users. Naturally, we could not ignore this fact; therefore, we acquired it for the test. The registrar is distinguished by the original case design, which is made of non-slip rubberized material, and convenient fasteners with a rotary lock. New assets include a built-in GPS module with the function of warning about police radars and cameras, a large 2.7-inch screen with a well-readable menu, and a large high-aperture lens. As a result, a very decent quality of shooting. As for the shortcomings, my colleagues and I had mixed opinions. But what we agreed on was working with the on-screen menu. On the one hand, it is informative and understandable; on the other, it’s a bit complicated for navigation. But, we believe, it is all about skills, so getting used to the menu is just a matter of time.

To implement the first stage of the test, it was decided to shoot the license plate on the machine with the help of devices, and then try to identify it while watching the video on the computer. The test was conducted in cloudy weather on one of the city streets. Having fixed the devices on the windshield of the car, in different modes we shot the rear license plate of the car in front of us. Recording was conducted from a distance of 10 m. Having some experience in conducting such tests, let us say that this distance is the boundary for the vast majority of Full HD devices. With its further increase, no matter what the manufacturers say, it will be almost impossible to parse the numbers and letters of the license plate on the video.

Actually, this fact is partially confirmed by the results of our survey. In separate comparative screenshots (for example, Street Storm CVR-A7510 or CARCAM Q7) below, this is clearly visible. It’s quite difficult to make out the numbers and letters of the sign in the Full HD image (photo on the right).

But in the screenshots taken from Super HD-tracks (photo on the left), numbers and letters are already more or less distinguishable. By the way, a similar picture is observed in comparative pictures obtained from other registrars. That is, in this case, we have a clear confirmation of the obvious usefulness of the ultra-high resolution mode. By the way, a visual comparison of the quality of the screenshots and the level of distinguishability of the characters allowed us to make an initial rating for the test participants. So, in this round, ParkCity DVR HD 750, Playme Back, Neoline Wide S50 come forward, followed by the Sho-Me A7–90FHD, Street Storm CVR-A7510 and CARCAM Q7. As a brief comment, we can say that of the six, two samples - Street Storm CVR-A7510 and KARKAM Q7 - use a 3.5-megapixel matrix. In our opinion, this fact explains their position in the ranking.

The novelty of the season in the lineup of Sho-Me registrars. This brand is well known to Russian motorists, and the range of manufactured registrars is quite wide. As for the test, to be honest, we expected from the new product more impressive results in the quality of shooting, but, alas, they turned out to be mediocre. The device could well have given way to another test participant - the Neoline Wide S50, but the price saved. This is the most affordable model among other samples, in our market its cost varies in the range from 4500 to 6500 rubles. Among other advantages - a built-in battery (up to 15 minutes of battery life) and a large informative display. The minus is a certain blurriness of the picture, which, in our opinion, is caused by an increased level of video noise. But this, we repeat, is only our assumption.

Check on the track

At the second stage of the test, which was carried out on a busy Moscow region highway, only three devices participated, because of the whole six high-speed shooting in Full HD mode is provided only for ParkCity DVR HD 750 (60 fps), Neoline Wide S50 (45 fps) and CARCAM Q7 (45 fps). In general, for conducting comparative assessments, they are enough. But for the purity of the experiment, we got another similar ParkCity, which, along with others, also shot, but at the usual 30 fps and in Super HD resolution.

Carrying out shooting during the races, we were able to several times disperse the car in the left lane to 100 km / h. Thus, the average speed of rapprochement with cars moving along the oncoming traffic reached 180 km / h. We were very interested in whether the registrars in such conditions, when the subject every second approaches the camera at 50 m, can qualitatively register the numbers of oncoming vehicles on the roller. What do we have in the end?

This sample against the background of other test participants can be characterized as a middle ground, both in terms of video quality and cost. It is a compact, lightweight device with an intuitive menu displayed on a large 2.7-inch display. Another advantage of the recorder is high-speed shooting modes, which fans of extreme driving will surely appreciate. Of the minuses of the device, we would draw the attention of the developers to its case, which is framed around the perimeter by a metallized frame. When placing the device on the windshield, there is a possibility of the appearance of reflected glare on it arising on the frame in sunny weather. By the way, other samples have no similar edging.

The test results (they are presented above as a group of four screenshots) surprised us somewhat. We expected that the number would be best recorded when shooting at 60 fps, but after processing the video it turned out that a better picture was obtained at the usual 30 fps, but in Super HD resolution, which was activated on the second ParkCity DVR HD 750. Of course, this is another plus in the asset of those registrars where the Super HD function is implemented. Which, however, does not detract from the merits of high-speed shooting. We are sure that it will surely be in demand in those situations when, for example, you want to more fully capture all the vicissitudes of your pastime while driving a car. Especially when it comes to extreme types of driving - in this case it will be much easier to fix this or that interesting shot.

Another good middling among the registrars presented in the test. In general, he writes well, but the device loses to the rest of the test participants by the dimension of the sensor matrix, which affects the detail of small fragments of the image. By the way, during the tests we used a modification that has a built-in GPS module, which determined one of the main advantages of this device, namely the ability to use the recorder as a tracker. The advantages also include 512 MB of internal memory and a 250 mA battery. h. Of the minuses it is worth highlighting three points. So, the availability of GPS-module, its own memory and battery, obviously, affected the price - this is the most expensive of the samples. In addition, the CVR-A7510 has a small (only 1.5 inches diagonal) display. Finally, ergonomics let us down: here is a rather inconvenient access to the memory card slot. It is located on the end of the device and is covered with a plug, which is problematic to open without a screwdriver.

Brief Summary

Since the second (high-speed) stage of the test turned out to be more research and educational, its results did not count. Therefore, the places for the test participants had to be determined by summarizing the results of the first stage, comparing price indicators and evaluating the ergonomics of each device. The situation was as follows: the leading three included ParkCity DVR HD 750, Playme Back and Sho-Me A7–90FHD, followed by the Neoline Wide S50, Street Storm CVR-A7510 and KARKAM Q7.
