Three years ago, Volkswagen surprised the world's first seven-speed manual gearbox - on a Porsche 911. And at the end of 2014, the Germans staked out the championship in the number of gears and in the segment of automated transmissions: the new preselective DSG robot has ten. Yes, yes, ten!

There is no fundamental novelty in the box with the DQ511 index, designed for a torque of up to 550 N · m. This is a further development of the DQ500 seven-speed gearbox with two clutches operating in an oil bath. To reduce friction losses, a special coating of gears was used, combining thorough initial processing of parts and subsequent electrochemical processing, as well as energy-saving oil, which must be changed every 60, 000 km.

A greater number of speeds were achieved due to another gear on the shaft of even gears and two additional couplings that open the shaft of the odd gears and one of the input shafts. This increased the number of possible combinations between gears. Now there are seventeen, but the designers used only a dozen. More is not needed yet: the current requirements for the level of harmful emissions are fulfilled. Moreover, the gear ratio can vary depending on the type of car or even the wishes of the customer. For example, crossovers and all-terrain vehicles need a “creeping” first gear, and fast cars for riding on autobahns will need a higher gear with a lower gear ratio. The power range of the new transmission is impressive: 10.6 versus 7.8 for the DQ500 seven-speed gearbox.

For several hundred meters on the test Passat, I was able to easily provoke the system several times on a mistake - and in real life it would not be any easier than with a cunning journalist driving. I transfer to Golf with the nameplate Mild Hybrid ("soft hybrid"). Claimed savings are 5–10% relative to a conventional machine. The engine is muffled for fuel economy at any speed, a necessary condition is coasting. A lithium-ion battery is responsible for powering all systems in this mode. It is not traction (you can’t ride it), but it provides more than energy to all the car’s systems: they are involved in movement much more than when stopped, so a regular battery, as with a regular “start-stop”, is not enough. The battery is charged from the main motor or during regenerative braking. The recovery intensity can be selected as you wish: at the third (maximum) level, the machine slows down efficiently even without the use of standard brakes. The engine starts if you touch the gas pedal or depress the brakes hard. In the second case, the electronics understands that a maneuver is ahead, which is more convenient and safer to carry out, having the ability to control traction.

The saved grams and milligrams cost the manufacturer tens of millions of euros, and ultimately these costs are borne by us consumers. And the pressure of environmentalists is not weakening. And it is obvious that further savings will be more expensive. Such is the paradox.
