ZIS 101, 1934

In the 1930s, our colleagues proudly tried to describe each new Soviet car, as soon as at least some information appeared about it. After all, there was something new - at all! The magazine reported on the executive car that the ZIS is preparing two years before the start of its production. Colleagues disassembled the structure in detail and did not even hide an important fact: “The appearance will be very close to the 1934 Buick.” It was his photographs and published in ZR with the captions: "ZIS 101". The car that went into the series two years later had very little in common with the one in the photo. But it became serial.

NATI-A, 1940

A modern carriage bus designed for 65 passengers, and even with a new 155 horsepower engine mounted transversely behind! Of course, I simply could not ignore such a progressive and unusual design for the USSR as “Driving”. The machine existed in a single copy. True, the magazine did not promise that it was about to become serial, but the tone of the publication was optimistic. The first serial ZIS 154 wagon bus appeared relatively soon - right after the war.

KIM 10, 1939–1940

The description of the first Soviet subcompact car, designed for private owners, was first published in ZR as far back as 1939, when equipment was still imported to the Moscow KIM Plant (Communist Youth International) at that time, there were no living cars. In the spring of 1940, when a photo of KIM 10-50 appeared on the May Day demonstration in the magazine, there were three prototypes. Several hundred mass-produced cars were assembled only in 1941 and at the same time created a four-door prototype KIM 10-52. But the magazine didn’t have time to write about him …

“SPARK”, “TARGET”, ZAZ 971, 1959-1962

The end of the 1950s and the beginning of the 1960s was the time of large construction projects, new automobile plants and cars. The era of bright hopes. One of them is a light and inexpensive car for the village. We really prepared such a model. A variety of prototypes were born almost every year. First appeared "Twinkle." Outwardly - a kind of "Niva" reduced in all dimensions, the result of cooperation between NAMI and the Irbitsky motorcycle plant. The car with a fiberglass body and a motorcycle engine had wheel gears, and in the future they promised a downshift.

A year and a half later, the famous Soviet designer B. M. Fitterman presented the all-wheel drive truck “Tselina” on the pages of the magazine. It was already a question of a whole gamut of modifications, the wait of which seemed to be left for a very short time. Finally, at the end of 1962, “Behind the wheel” wrote: “From the new year, a utility vehicle will begin to roll off the Kommunara conveyor”. Motorists were promised the ZAZ 970/971 family - a van, a pickup truck and a minivan of a wagon layout at ZAZ 965 nodes, with rear or all-wheel drive. The reality turned out to be more prosaic: only five years later, in Lutsk, a compact all-terrain vehicle was gradually launched. But it was already a completely different car.

YERAZ 3730, 1973

“So, YERAZ 3730 will be released soon as the first experimental batch.” The optimistic note of the article was supported by a photograph of three prototypes - a pair of minibuses and a van. Small-scale production with grief in half began only in the mid-1980s, but even in the 1990s, after the collapse of the USSR, the “new” ErAZs, introduced two decades ago, did not become massive.

LuAZ 1301, 1989

In 1989, a prototype compact all-terrain vehicle was even put on the cover of “Behind the Wheel”, since the domestic auto industry rarely spoiled real innovations. Perestroika was in full swing. It seemed that until a happy tomorrow, just a couple of steps. However, the publication of the new LuAZ was restrained. Keynote: the design, of course, is interesting, but who will give the plant money? No one gave.

Peppy 1990

This car is one of the curiosities of the times of perestroika. But he could not tell about him. A car with a motorcycle engine, like that of the Serpukhov motorized car S3D, was exhibited at the Exhibition of Economic Achievements in the pavilion “Land Reclamation and Water Management”. It was made by the Pskov-based Hydroimpulse enterprise, which had previously produced buses on Gorky chassis, and then known under the name Pskovavto. They even announced plans to make 10, 000 cars a year. Who today would remember Peppy if not for Driving?

BAZ 3778, 1993

The perestroika term “conversion” implied that the enterprises of the military-industrial complex would soon overwhelm the country with the peaceful and necessary goods. Bryansk Automobile was to launch production of one and a half trucks, which NAMI had been engaged in since the mid-1980s, and production was planned first in Ulyanovsk, then in Kirovabad. Until the end of 1993, they promised to assemble 500 cars in Bryansk. And there, they promised, a minibus, a nurse, a bread truck and other modifications would go. And what? Until 1996, a little more than 150 artificially made copies were made, after which the high-profile project became history.

VAZ 2151, 2002

This car has won a place on our cover. Still would! VAZ 2151 was to replace the most massive at that time VAZ family - the "classics." A car with a 1.7-liter engine was no longer a concept car, but a running model. The deadline for the start of small-scale production of sedans, and then station wagons in the Volga Automobile Plant OPP was called 2006. However, life turned in such a way that investing in a new family of classical layout did not make sense. Old cars were bought for another decade, and then the question disappeared by itself.

Fiat Siena / Palio / Marea, 1997

A memorandum on the creation of a joint venture under the big name Nizhegorodmotors between Fiat and GAZ was signed in Moscow in the presence of the Italian Prime Minister. The plans were serious: 150, 000 cars a year! "Driving" immediately described in detail the Italian sedan, wagon and hatchback. After all, very soon they, as everyone was sure, would become one of the most affordable foreign cars. But in 1998, the crisis hit … And Fiat, even today, can only dream of selling passenger cars in volumes planned for a decade and a half ago.

UAZ 3165 "Simba", 1999

The article was called “Replacing the Loaf”.” We felt the pretty Simba minivan almost immediately after the Ulyanovsk taught the first prototypes to ride. For a whole family of cars, they planned rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, modern engines, different bodies. "Loaf" then turned 40 years old, and now has exceeded fifty - and to this day there is no real replacement for it.

GAZ 3106, 1999-2004

For several years we have described and even tested prototypes of a large and comfortable Gazovskoy off-road vehicle. Prototypes changed the appearance and equipment. At the end of 2004 they even called the price of GAZ 3106 12 000 dollars. However, already next year the project was finally abandoned to start new ones. With the same fate.
