At the entrance of the Ulyanovsk hotel there are two brand new “patriots”. We try on branded gray-blue robes and get brief instructions from the factory workers: “Now we are going to production, you are in the first car, with Vadim Arkadevich; then a training center, a meeting, lunch, an official presentation of the cars of the 2014 model year.” Shvetsov comes out of the entrance with a quick step, a lightning greeting, and now he is already taking us to the factory. What a throttle response!

- You probably already noticed: here is the main difference between the car of the 2014 model year - the transfer case selector instead of the lever. Recently, we changed the instrument panel, in addition, now we have a solid ceiling upholstery … But we’ll talk about this today.

To be behind the wheel of the Patriot is a usual thing for you?

- I regularly make test trips. Once I took the Patriot for six months to study it thoroughly. I remember the neighbors were surprised - I then rented housing on Rublevka. And he traveled around traffic jams on the virgin soil, there before it was possible.

9: 00–9: 30 PRODUCTION OPERATION

Along the two assembly conveyors, we pass to the MCC, the production control center. The night before, there was a heavy downpour, even the Ministry of Emergencies was connected, so Shvetsov’s first question is about damage and conclusions. The first did not happen, the second confirms the fidelity of the earlier decisions on the modernization of production, including such a prosaic part as storm sewers. On a large screen, information about the released cars, the implementation of the plan; here you can track the position of each body, each future car. After listening to the reports of the factory bosses, Shvetsov explains:

- We will integrate the entire system in the near future into the dealer portal so that the client can see: my car was welded, painted, sent for assembly. Now this process is not visualized in any way, but we want to hang webcams around the factory. They cost a couple of dollars … UAZ blamed for the backwardness - it is important for us to make the company transparent, so that the client understands: much is done here for quality. And saw it online.

Can I order a specific car from the dealer now?

- Yes. True, the dealer is now unable to say exactly when the order will be executed. But in the next four months he will be able to do this.

10: 00–11: 00 QUALITY AUDIT

At the end of the assembly shop, there are two cars in the inspection pits, gray-blue robes have already gathered around. The auditor begins the report: “The pickup scored 80 points, one critical 20-point defect - one squeezed the radiator pipe …” Specialists followed him around the car, looked into the passenger compartment, fixed the flaws: the gasket was short, the side trim was not fixed, a dent on the door, dirt in the salon.

“We conduct such an examination twice a day,” the General says. - All plant management is going here. At 10:00 - an audit, at 15:00 - a report on how to fix defects. A routine, it would seem, but it is very important. You see defects: non-adherence, scratches, rattles and so on? According to them, and evaluates the quality of the consumer. All deficiencies are administratively overcome, only tight control allows them to be eradicated. The results for half a year are not bad: they started with the sum of 300 points, now an average of 115.

Leadership is assembled every day, but how often do you get it?

- I arrive almost every week for a couple of days, the rest of the time I communicate during video conferences. I started my duties a year ago, launched quite a few projects. I was well trained by foreigners, my eyes are not tied to one UAZ, so I immediately began to introduce those systems that are accepted in the global automotive industry, regardless of local characteristics.

When the culprit of the defect is found, how is it treated?

- The operator must understand that he is the guarantor of quality. Or a good car, or none. And here it is very important that the person does not hide the error. If he admitted: “I made a mistake”, we do not punish for this - on the contrary, we welcome. Our duty is to help him, to technologically train him in one or another operation on special devices in a quiet non-working time.

That is, if an employee allows marriage, he will be sent for training. It looks like a gymnasium, scholarly punishment - leave for three hours after class …

- You are right, really a schoolboy thing: if you make a mistake, you stay.

“But without prejudice to the money?”

- Of course. We must give the right to make a mistake, otherwise the operator will begin to be too cautious, lose the pace, and get confused.

Meanwhile, the audit is over, the head of the assembly workshop says that work was done to eliminate yesterday’s defect - “the expansion tank is not fixed on one side”. The assembly post has a visualization. (Indeed, we saw on the conveyor belt the photographs “how right” and “how wrong.”) But the operator is directed to training.

“Out of hours,” Shvetsov clarifies.

This is just the next point of our program - a training center, and then work on the conveyor. We go to dress in overalls.

With your right hand, we look for the M6 nut in the box and bait it a couple of turns on the corresponding stud. At the same time (!) With our left hand we select M10 and wind it onto an adjacent bolt. In gloves. For a while. Yes, and even the thread may be small.

Shvetsov and colleagues from the UAZ top management are also trying nearby. The general director does not work for the camera at all, but carries out his own program: the entire management of the plant must go through the conveyor, master the work operations.

Having trained at different stands (the installation of clamps, work with a wrench and other typical actions selected by technologists are practiced on them), we go to the conveyor. It's funny that I got to mount the steering gear: exactly with the same operation, I started my career at ZIL many years ago. In the neighborhood, Shvetsov installs the details of the fuel system; on the other hand, the director of the scientific and technical center Yevgeny Galkin works.

A little ripe, get together in about forty minutes. The workers have a short break, we have a meeting ahead. On the way, we share with each other: “I would like that designer to offer to tighten the nut, with two fingers!”, “I stopped the conveyor a couple of times”, “Where will the assembled cars go - will we be rejected or auctioned?” The last is a joke.

In general, it is curious. Such an internship is designed to educate a person, adapt him to the conveyor. With high-ranking officials, the situation is partly the opposite: in their power, if necessary, adapt technology to a person. For example, I am sure that soon a couple of clamps and nuts will be moved. And the earplugs on the conveyor will be allocated normal, and not from pieces of gauze. In general, not a useless and timeless pastime is to work on the assembly of machines in the company with the General.

13: 00-14: 00 MEETING

The topic is the modernization of the UAZ production site and the development of the Patriot product family. The Ulyanovsk plant grew in size gradually, as specific plants were commissioned, and today it spreads over 320 hectares - this is a fact. So much is not needed - this is the conclusion. A future plant for 100, 000 cars is now being planned: at the end of next year, an efficient, no-frills, enterprise will be put into operation in half the area.

Shvetsov listens to reports, for the most part is silent, but on short questions and remarks it is clear how well he studied production. For example, the idea expressed by him to paint a pickup truck assembled with a cargo platform will allow a little to expand the bottleneck of the painting complex and, if necessary, reach a higher assembly rate.

We will talk about the future of the plant with Vadim Arkadevich a little later, and now Galkin takes the floor to talk about the future of the Patriot. The report is all the more important because in just a couple of hours the current stage of modernization, the Patriot of the 2014 model year, will be presented to reporters. So for Shvetsov this is also a kind of run. The head of the scientific and technical center talks about cars in 2015 and 2016 - you will find some details in the photo captions, others will have to wait: not all information is open yet.

14: 00–15: 00 THE TALK OF THE FUTURE

Vadim Arkadevich, you just held a meeting on the prospects of UAZ as a plant and as a car. Let's start with production - what will it be?

- Our strategy is an assembly plant for various brands. We will offer the market an industrial assembly using CKD technology (from welding to the final product. - Ed.). And we will work in our niche. Frame machines are becoming smaller, but many manufacturers still have them - pickups, SUVs … Firms do not aim to localize them on their own: the volumes are not the same. But we could offer such a service. By the way, there are analogous enterprises - Magna-Steyr, for example.

But does the UAZ brand remain?

- Yes, the assembly plant will provide services to both UAZ and other companies. Actually UAZ will be engaged in distribution of the brand and engineering. We expect to produce 75–80 thousand UAZs annually. Plus assembly of models of our partners.

Who will become them?

- Most likely, we will announce this at the start of the project at the end of the year.

What models do you plan to abandon in the near future?

- An obstacle for older models will be the Euro-5 standards. Hunter’s production is gradually decreasing, after 2015 it will not be economically feasible to produce it. The “loaf” has a slightly longer life cycle due to its indispensability and qualities such as cross-country ability and unpretentiousness. We sell 30 thousand cars each, even the crisis has not affected. We have a division "UAZ-Spetsavtomobili", - products that have reached the final stage of the life cycle, we will transfer there, freeing the conveyor. But we will offer customers the best, modern solutions. The Cargo truck is a complete replacement for the 3303.

“Only the loaf itself is not a substitute …”

- The Americans are quite successfully using the add-in: they install one or another module on the cargo platform. We already have a similar solution - we put the ambulance module on the Cargo platform. As for the completely new minibus, its price will surely go beyond a million by all accounts.

The Patriot family, including the pickup truck, the Cargo with add-ons and the SUV itself, is the basis of our work until the end of 2015.

So what is next?

- Next, we need some kind of transitional model. A completely new, completely different UAZ car will be perceived quite difficult. Therefore, we need a bridge to it: take the existing product of our partners - an all-terrain vehicle with independent suspension, automatic, a range of gasoline-diesel engines, make deep facelift and launch it under the UAZ brand with a volume of 13-15 thousand.

In parallel with the Patriot?

- Yes. The current “Patriot” has a long life ahead, since it occupies its clear niche, and subsequently will become a replacement for the “Hunter”. Inexpensive, unpretentious all-terrain vehicle. We will surely bring it to 2020, while customizing it. That is, we will offer not just a standard product, but a car in the form, in the configuration that the client directly needs.

“The transition product will lead to …”

-… to the new UAZ brand family, to our own product. It is clear that he will no longer have a frame, a dependent suspension … We will make a completely new D-class platform on which you can build an all-terrain vehicle, a minivan, and a pickup truck, and - why not? - a car. This is the prospect for 2018.

Your designers can be calm that they will not be dispersed?

“They are now fully loaded, because the Patriot updates are scheduled for every year.” Already in the next, 2014, they should catch up with Hover and Duster by options. The ZMZ engine is good, but we need to work on reducing fuel consumption. In the future there will be a 2-liter engine - with the best traction and economic performance …

A completely new engine? Or the development of the 406th?

- Of course, we preserve the architecture, but take a big step forward. The block remains cast iron, the head is new. Clutch, of course, we will never do it ourselves again - we are full … In general, the “cart” is absolutely modern. It is necessary to improve the design - next year the exterior will change, we will conduct a deep facelift.

“Maybe then the Patriot may exist for itself?” There are old-timers like Defender and Gelendavagen …

- And no one is going to abandon the Patriot, it’s just not enough for him. We now have a Patriot, then there will be a Patriot and a transition model, then a Patriot and a new model. I need such a combination to raise the brand.

15: 00-15: 30 OVER UAZ

It’s time to join our fellow journalists to once again walk along the assembly line, now guests, to paint and meet Vadim Shvetsov again at the official presentation of Patriot 2014. But before that I manage to ask a few questions literally in the elevator.

Vadim Arkadievich, you are both the director and co-owner of the enterprise today through the Sollers company. It does not interfere?

- In Sollers, the strategy of all the components of the holding was built, and only the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant stood out from this cohort. A lot of time was lost, so I decided to straighten the corners and make decisions on the spot. I believe - I do, I do not believe - I do not. I am not going to be the eternal general, - the time will come, the sensible operational person will come and will be engaged in normal operational activities.

“But you were and remain the master?”

- I am a shareholder of Sollers, and Sollers is 66% owner of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant. I understand how to solve his problems, I know what to do: we will adjust the UAZ and it will turn out to be a good project. I have full confidence in this.

Born in 1967 in Cherepovets (Vologda Oblast). In 1992, he graduated from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys; in 2001, he received an MBA from Northumbria University (Great Britain). He began his career at the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (subsequently - the Severstal company). Since 1993, he has been the commercial director of Severstal-invest Trading House, and since 2001, he has been First Deputy General Director of Severstal OJSC. Since 2002 - General Director of SOLLERS OJSC (then Severstal-Auto). Since October 2012, he has been General Director of UAZ OJSC. He heads the boards of directors of the Ulyanovsk Automobile and Zavolzhsky Motor Plant.

The Patriot update program is scheduled for the next three years. Next year (by 2015 model year) the all-terrain vehicle will receive a stabilizer in the rear suspension, a ninth-generation Bosch ABS, a new maintenance-free cardan transmission, a pre-heater, axles with a pair of 4.625 and, most importantly, a noticeably updated appearance. Facelift means new optics, glued glass, bumpers with fastening to the body (terrible gaps will go away), other devices, etc.

The 2016 model year is a 2-liter gasoline turbo engine (150 hp, 300 N · m, Euro-5), a single fuel tank, stabilization system, air conditioning, new front panel and steering wheel, several airbags.

In addition, in the next two to three years, the Patriot must overcome the lag in terms of options: there will be an on-board computer, a rear-view camera, navigation, a multi-function steering wheel, cruise control, etc.

The Patriot of the 2014 model year is one and a half dozen significant innovations. The main thing is the electronically controlled Daimos transfer case.

Together with the lever left an extra source of noise in the cabin; an increase in gear ratio to 2.56 (was 1.95) improved traction capabilities. In the past, ZMZ's unreliable clutch remained - the plant returned to the LuK unit.
