Five years ago, automatic parking systems were something fantastic. Today they are installed not only on premium cars, but also on affordable cars. I wonder if they work the same on expensive and cheap cars? Can you trust the car parker? Will human automation surpass parking in art? We tested several cars.
To protect them from damage, the rows of cars in the parking lot were imitated with light and soft foam cubes. We set the distance between them for each car individually: it consists of the length of the body and another 0.7 m on each side. Enough to confidently park manually, and manufacturers promise that the automation of this stock is guaranteed to be enough.
We fix time, we notice features, we enter errors into the protocol. Then we gradually move the cubes and repeat the exercise. And so on until the automation starts to malfunction.
Along the way, we evaluate the interface - is it convenient to use the system, is the control logical, how does the graphics of electronic devices look like.
Of course, car parkers get additional advantages for their multifunctionality - for example, for lateral parking or assistance when leaving a number of cars.

The interface is primitive, for a non-Russified dashboard a fat minus. But this model is assembled in Russia. Sporting performed the practical work worse than the others - in about a third of the races I did not see a parking place, I parked crookedly several times, ran into a curb from cones. In addition, the measurements had to be stopped at around 1 m (half a meter from each bumper) - the worst result.

If only because he is not trained to call into tight niches - to complete the maneuver he needs at least an additional 0.8 m to the length of his own body. But in the interface there are sensible things that for some reason other manufacturers have not thought of. For example, prompts to the driver what they should do in the process of automatic parking do not appear on the instrument panel, but directly on the central display, where the picture from the rear camera and the parking sensors graph are displayed. And this screen is conveniently located - at the top of the dashboard.

The interface is purely functional and, perhaps, not as catchy as the others, but there are no complaints about ergonomics. However, I would like not only techies, but also designers to work on a machine at a price of a million.

Despite the higher status and price, Audi is inferior in diligence. He turned out to be less attentive - more often than not he noticed accessible parking spaces. And one day I started to turn the steering wheel late and did not hit the target between the foam cubes. Therefore, in driving exercises A6 took only third place. But in general, Audi has not dropped its high status - a nice interface, good ergonomics, convenient maintenance when parking, and there are no equal vehicles with long range parking sensors.

He was the only one who reliably climbed into a niche that was only 0.6 m longer than the body (300 mm of free space on each side), and even once climbed into the target another 100 mm narrower. I made a minimum of mistakes - only a couple of times out of several dozen attempts I did not see a suitable parking place. And although the seconds during the maneuver, he did not show the best (largely due to the large dimensions), but he acted most stably, accurately and comfortably for the driver. A separate weighty plus - for the location of the rear view camera, which leaves the logo only when reverse gear is engaged. The review is excellent even in the most slushy weather.

We organized a competition not only between cars, but also between the driver and the automation. With rare exceptions, the living organism emerged victorious. At the first maneuvers, the results sometimes differed by 10-15 seconds, depending on the car and the ability of the driver to park. The parking assistant lost mainly because he thought and tried on longer, turned the steering wheel more slowly.

The difference became even more noticeable when the distance between the cubes decreased. The explanation is simple: a person used a more optimal trajectory for the race, because he needed less visits. But the final conclusions of the experts coincided: the parking assistants work quite tolerably (unless Kia needs to debug the automation), and those who park insecurely will be more likely to help than to hinder. And the next generation, be sure, will grow to the level of a pro, and then plug him in the belt. After all, this was the case with all electronic assistants.

Frankly, I pressed the button of the parking assistant in the editorial Ford Focus 3 five times with force. The first is out of interest, as soon as I moved to this model. The steering wheel is famously spinning without my participation - a fun sight! The last time I tried the system a few days before the test was to make sure that it was useless to me.
In order for the car to find an empty seat, you have to drive too slowly, and this, in a metropolis, naturally causes dissatisfaction with other drivers.
And it was precisely when help was most needed, that is, in cramped conditions, that electronics found its weaknesses. Without problems in two steps, the Focus can only park when it’s one meter front and back in the car’s reserve. The distance is a little less - and Ford no longer sees the opportunity to get in between other cars or demands to advance yourself back and forth more than required by an experienced driver, number of times (thanks to the excellent work of the front and rear parking sensors!).
In general, in my opinion, a parking assistant present in rich trim levels is useful only to inexperienced drivers. The main thing is not to admire the rotating wheel and not to forget that the machine itself does not know how to slow down!

How much a car park costs is difficult to calculate for each model. Only Volkswagen offers it to the Passat SS separately for 36 970 rubles. (the minimum price of a car with a parking assistant is 1, 172, 970 rubles), the rest are only in fixed trim levels. For example, at Audi-A6 it is already in the basic configuration at a price of 1, 704, 000 rubles. At Toyota Auris, Kia Sporting, Ford Kuga, the automatic parking system appears only in the most expensive versions: respectively , Prestige for 944, 000 rubles., "Premium" for 1 299 000 rubles., "Titanium plus" from 1, 443, 000 rubles. There is no other option - if you need a parking assistant, you have to fork out for the indicated amounts.
No need to be afraid of auto parking. She has not yet grown to an experienced driver, but she is already performing maneuvers much better than a beginner
