The GAZ-61 off-road passenger model was developed specifically for Soviet military commanders. The leading designer was Vitaly Andreyevich Grachev, the creator of the three-axle cargo-passenger GAZ-21, army GAZ-64 and GAZ-67, armored car BA-64, wheeled self-propelled gun GAZ-68 … Grachev received the design task for the GAZ-61 in July 1938. Worked then quickly, vigorously: already in June 1939 the prototype was tested.

The designer used mainly parts of production cars, redesigning only the front axle and transfer case. Chassis, body, brakes, electrical equipment - from the GAZ-11-40 chaise. Four-speed gearbox - from the GAZ-MM “one and a half”. The prototype was a Dodge D5 engine - then our Soviet GAZ-11. All this helped restorers to recreate the car: the missing, but authentic parts were taken from other gas machines.

According to the notation system adopted at pre-war GAZ, the first two digits are the type of chassis, the second pair is the type of body. The GAZ-61-40 car was produced with an open body (chaise). Machines of the first industrial party of 1940 received the people's commissar of defense, Marshal Voroshilov, generals Zhukov, Tyulenev, Meretskov and Pavlov. Closed GAZ-61-73 went to Marshals Shaposhnikov, Kulik and Tymoshenko.

Konev is not among the first recipients of all-terrain vehicles, he is the third "owner". The first was Army General Dmitry Grigoryevich Pavlov, commander of the troops of the Western Special Military District, transformed from the outbreak of the war into the Western Front. On June 30, 1941, after the defeat of a significant part of the front forces in the Białystok-Minsk "cauldron", General Pavlov was removed from command, arrested and executed. The car got to the new front commander - Marshal Tymoshenko. Semen Konstantinovich already had his own GAZ-11-73. Colonel General Konev got the all-terrain vehicle in the fall of 1941, when he became the front commander instead of Tymoshenko, and he lost his "reserve" to him.

Due to the approaching harsh winter in 1941, the phaetons from the first batch were sent to the Moscow Tank Repair Plant No. 101, where closed bodies from the GAZ-11-73 were installed on the chassis, on the model 61-73 model, which by then had already been produced in small batches. In this form, this car came to our days. The marshal himself gave him several lines in his memoirs “Notes of the Front Commander”:

“My group consisted of four cars. In front of me was "Willis" with an adjutant, then my car. I was sitting in the front seat, next to the driver. In the back - a bed and a pillow. The Dodge car followed me with security, and then an armored personnel carrier. All cars, overcoming the mud and deep ruts done by the tankers, walked at first speed. The roar of our engines drowned out everything, and we did not hear the noise of the aircraft. Suddenly, around us, on an area of about 50 to 100 meters, everything was lit up in flames, explosions of bombs and a whistle of fragments sounded. I ordered the driver to turn off the headlights, but the upcoming Willis stopped and blocked the road. My car ran into him, the light turned on again from the shock, and the driver could not extinguish it. A minute passes, two. We hear the second approach of the aircraft, and a new series of bombs scattered near us. Finally, the headlights went out. All four cars stopped. No aircraft could be heard in the night sky. After inspecting the cars, we saw that both windshields were pierced by small fragments in my emka. There are also several holes in the roof, one of considerable size. “As a keepsake”, a large fragment of a bomb weighing about 500 g appeared in the back, which hit the pillow and blanket and got stuck. The pillow and blanket saved me from a shard that could have hit the spine. All survived …"

Together with the marshal, not only his GAZ-61, but also the drivers G. I. Gubatenko and F. P. Pogorelko went through the entire war.

After the war, the car ended up in the garage of the General Staff, and then got to Lieutenant Colonel NN Pustovoichenko. Already in the 70s, Nikolai Nikolaevich was aware of all the historical value of rarity - he carried out restoration, carefully kept it, participated in parades and filming. In several films, this GAZ-61 "played" itself - the car of the commander of the Western Front.

After the death of Pustovoichenko, the car changed several more owners. Someone tried to restore it again, but failed. To Yevgeny Shamansky, he got, as they say, "in the bag." The car was restored for several years, having managed to bring it to a completely original state. It was possible to restore the razdatka, and bridges, and rare CV joints. The fabric for the salon was ordered again, on the model of the surviving piece of upholstery. A fragment of the native paint was saved on the dashboard. Even wheels with a special “all-terrain” tread “Ground Flu” correspond to the original. And, of course, the car is on the go, which we appreciated during the test drive.
