A budget sedan today for automakers, if not a gold mine, then certainly a guarantee of stable demand. Especially in Asian countries (including China), South America, as well as in Eastern Europe. Not surprisingly, large manufacturers rushed into this niche. And the main question that confronted them was the competitive price.
Peugeot 301 and Citroen C-Elysee

A proven recipe was used in the French PSA: they developed one new, truly modern model and put it into production under different brands. The issue was established in the Spanish Vigo. An elegant solution: fans of the Peugeot brand got the lion they loved so much on the hood, and Citroen fans got chevrons on the grille. Both are satisfied. And it doesn’t matter that under the hoods there are identical motors - after all, they acquire cars assembled in Europe, and not somewhere else at the next production localized in third world countries. For poor buyers, this is often one of the best recommendations.

Outwardly, they are similar, but they will not refuse individuality. The hood, bumper, grille and headlights of the 301st resemble the Peugeot 508 in miniature. C-Elysee is also decorated in the corporate style of its brand - the bumper separates the narrow grille and wide air intake. In general, you will not be mistaken. Inside, striking differences in the design of the dashboard. In Peugeot, the center console visually gravitates towards the driver, and in Citroen - towards the passenger. But, if you look closely, the deflectors, the tunnel with the electric window keys around the gear lever are the same.

The interior of the Peugeot 301 looks more classic, and the center console is visually oriented to the driver. The power window keys on the tunnel are a common ergonomic feature of both models. The design and decoration of the Citroen C-Elysee is brighter than that of the opponent, the inserts are larger, and the “beard” of the console, if not driven by the front passenger, is certainly the “property” joint with the driver. In addition to small design differences, the salons are identical in ergonomics and sizes. True, the front seats in the Peugeot (in this case, due to the configuration) look a bit more presentable. But there are practically no special complaints about landing behind the wheel and in the second row. There are slight differences between the cargo compartments. With the same shape and capacity of the luggage racks, the configurations of the apertures are different: for Peugeot it is a simple trapezoid, and for Citroen it is a shaped contour with an envelope of the rear lights.

Both cars have a good trajectory. Among the shortcomings is the not clearly pronounced zero position of the steering wheel, which is especially noticeable with a smooth rearrangement from row to row. But once you get on the serpentine, accuracy and feedback on the steering wheel bring driving pleasure. Suspension settings are also worthy of respect: little defects in the asphalt are almost not transmitted to the body, but there are no frightening rolls in corners or a noticeable buildup on gentle waves. Nevertheless, a Peugeot with a diesel engine on the road is slightly “denser” - it has stiffer springs and other shock absorbers.

Citroen C-Elysee

In all versions of the C-Elysee and the 301st with a manual gearbox, except for diesel, the gear lever with a spherical handle. A diesel engine is more powerful than a gasoline competitor; accordingly, it allows less frequent gear changes and a more smooth operation of gas. At the same time, getting the speed of gain is very close in sensations to the gasoline 115-strong version. The gasoline engine is more responsive to the gas pedal, and the dynamics of the car are higher in numbers. But for fast acceleration, this engine requires high revolutions, and the gear lever (by the way, less tenacious than on the diesel version) has to be manipulated more often. And yet: the power reserve of the diesel version in real conditions easily reaches 650–700 km on one tank (verified by personal experience), while the 1.6-liter gasoline does not always travel 500 km.
Asked the price
The basic versions of the 301st (Access) and C-Elysee (Dynamic) are identical in equipment and price - from 455, 900 rubles. Here, only a gasoline 3-cylinder engine of 1.2 liters (72 hp) and a 5-speed manual gearbox, as well as a driver airbag, ABS, electric power steering and tilt steering, audio training and steel 15-inch wheels. In the second configuration (Active and Tendance, respectively), in both cases, another engine option is added - a 1.6-liter gasoline (115 hp) with a 4-speed automatic transmission, a second airbag, air conditioning and some other little things. An audio system is also an option in this case. For 10, 000 rubles. You can install a couple more pillows and Isofix mounts.

The top versions of Allure and Exclusive are equipped with only 1.6-liter units (with manual gearbox or automatic transmission). Citroen will cost 15, 000 rubles. cheaper, but for ESP and 16-inch alloy wheels will have to pay 20, 000 rubles. Peugeot will have them by default. In addition, Citroen does not offer a diesel version in Russia. The Peugeot has it (in the Allure configuration). True, only with a manual gearbox and without ESP, and the diesel 301st is more expensive than its counterparts - from 681, 900 rubles.

- The choice in this case is both simple and complex at the same time. Obvious fans of one of the brands do not have this question at all, and at the same time they may not envy opponents - the price with a similar configuration is almost the same. In general, this is a competition for the nameplate you like - in any case you will get the same car with common advantages and disadvantages. But if you want a diesel, then this is only Peugeot. And I would choose it, despite the higher price. In my opinion, he rides a little better.
