A few days before being sent to the training ground, the marathon team experienced a state of deja vu: what was happening was reminiscent of events a year ago. Then, even before the start, we had to replace the collapsed bearings of the rear hubs of the Lada Grant, and the Chevrolet Aveo at the marathon constantly annoyed with the error of the anti-lock brake system. This year, the role of the "Grants" was played by the Nissan Almera assembled at the same plant, which fell under a revocable campaign to replace the front brake hoses with longer ones. And “Cobalt” got used to the Aveo image, having begun to periodically light the Check engine lamp before the start.

Like the ghosts of last year’s heroes, these cars made us nervous even before the beginning of the ninth part of the opera entitled “60 hours at the wheel”. Only the Citroen-C4 Sedan assembled in Kaluga was tested without visible problems and was considered a potential winner of the championship. Will the coincidences continue and the laurels will again go to the car with French roots?

REGULATION “60 HOURS“DRIVING”- 2013

For five days, three new ones for the Russian car market have been winding off test kilometers on the roads of the Dmitrov training ground. Exactly 60 hours they drive on a 14-kilometer ring at maximum speed and another six are on the cobblestone. All cars are filled with the same fuel and are ballasted with water-filling mannequins with a total weight of 210 kg.

Check in the boxes - only for refueling, changing the pilot and a quick inspection of the car. In the event of a malfunction, minor repairs are allowed, however, the working time of the mechanics (for one arrival in the boxes) should not exceed an hour. Otherwise, the car is excluded from the competition, and its further participation in the marathon (if possible) takes place outside the classification. A set of spare parts - drive belts, lamps, candles and tires. In the evening of each day - a mandatory inspection on the overpass. In the morning - checking the level of working fluids. During the marathon, we record the distance traveled, the maximum and average speeds, fuel consumption and time spent in the boxes. The most reliable car wins.

DAY ONE: STONE IN ITS GARDEN

It was the Citroën that was the first to be sent to the speed ring, since the pre-launch measurements of the 150-strong Frenchman were expectedly the fastest. With a minute delay, the Chevrolet-Cobalt went into action, and the slowest Nissan took the lead. Will this sequence persist over a long distance?

We arm ourselves with stopwatch and observe the following picture: the powerful C4 rushes along the track as if on wings, on each circle beating rivals for 45–48 seconds and showing almost the best time in the history of the marathon - 4 minutes 15 seconds. “Cobalt” goes without revelations, its result is much more modest: 5 minutes 3 seconds. But “Almera” presents a surprise, starting to systematically roll on a competitor. Her lap time is 5 minutes 1 second.

As it turned out, it’s the cut-off that limits the speed of the Chevrolet at 175–176 km / h, while the speedometer needle “Nissan” passes over two hundred long descents. Even the more expressive superiority of Almeria over the rival is hindered only by the old four-speed automatic. Thanks to a completely unnecessary pair of transmissions, the Chevy regains its strength on the hills and demonstrates a slightly lower fuel appetite. However, its fuel gauge in extreme modes does not work very well. As in the case of the Solaris a couple of years ago, the very first Cobalt pilot stood on the track with an empty tank. At the same time, the instruments showed two more divisions, and the computer promised a 50-kilometer run.

More serious troubles didn’t make them wait too long: Citroen suffered from a stone (or stones - alas, the speed ring of the landfill in this regard is similar to the usual Russian road).

The "shell" lifted by the wheel broke under the bottom the flimsy plastic mounts of the parking brake cable - it sagged and frayed on the asphalt. In addition, the stones left a couple of dents on the muffler, damaged the mount of the adsorber and the rear bumper. Thank God, the problem was quickly discovered - the plastic case of the adsorber, having shifted, began to be welded to the hot exhaust pipe! Say, is this an accident? Not really. At least two colleagues from other automotive publications faced similar problems - both on the structurally identical Peugeot 408. And one during a similar resource test, and the other in real life.

One way or another, there is no excuse for such poor protection of the bottom and, most importantly, for the dangerous neighborhood of incompatible elements, because cars, as the advertisement assures us, are adapted to Russian conditions. We strongly recommend that the manufacturer take these very conditions into account and make design changes.

We only had to replace the broken-off fasteners with clamps and continue the tests under the June rain starting to wet the track.

The day began by adding 300 g of oil to the Chevrolet engine, which came as a surprise to our entire team. Neither the early cutoff, nor the modern 6-speed automatic transmission helped to moderate the oil appetite. And the more nimble Citroen and Nissan at the end of the first day showed complete indifference to lubricants. The weather is completely in order. The cloudless sky above the campus inspired hope on a day as cloudless from the point of view of faults.

And a couple of hours later, the pilot of the Citroen complained at the scheduled refueling for the vibrations that appeared. Inspection revealed a considerable hernia on the left front wheel, caused by the inevitable passage through the pits, which noticeably increased over the course of the year.

Then it went like clockwork. Compared to yesterday, the pace of movement increased, and fuel consumption of all but Cobalt decreased. Citroën took off 2 seconds from its own time, having completed a circle in 4 minutes 13 seconds, and Chevrolet and Nissan together drove out of five minutes per second and two, respectively. The Nissan Almera proved to be the most prepared styer, which drove a tank of 317 km, significantly exceeding the competitors' indicators (278 km - Citroen, 262 km - Chevrolet). Only in the late afternoon, the Frenchman again distracted from the statistics, who approached for refueling with a side cut of the rear left wheel. Combining its replacement with the tightening of the clamps installed yesterday (fixing the parking brake cable), they released the car back onto the track.

Wednesday was rather calm, as if giving us the opportunity to take a breath before the numerous events of the final days. In the morning, Chevrolet’s thirst was again quenched with an additional 500 g of oil and sent to the ring, where the new first-shift driver traditionally dried the tank a couple of kilometers from the Lukoil fuel truck.

Fortunately, the incidents ended on this, and our colleagues calmly continued collecting interesting statistics. Today we made GPS measurements of the maximum and average speeds, having received clear confirmation that the average speed of the Nissan on a single lap practically coincides with the Chevrolet performance - with a very significant difference in the maximum speed. At an evening inspection, they found that the oil leak from the Cobalt machine became stronger. However, the real threat is still far away, and the level is still within normal limits, so we concentrated on more important matters: we replaced the front wheels of the Citroen, once again we tightened the clamps holding the parking brake cable, and also put new tires on the front axle of the Nissan. Then they went to the cobblestone 8-kilometer ring.

Let me remind you, this year we decided to move away from the usual rules and not include the time spent on cobblestone driving in the main 60 hours. Therefore, a 6-hour program (3 hours a day) was agreed to ride in the evenings. Citroën was again placed at the head of the column, expecting that its pendants would suffer the most from vibrations and shaking. However, it turned out that the car effortlessly copes with the test - in its cabin there are fewer “crickets”. And in terms of the comfort of overcoming cobblestone, it is almost the best.

Chevrolet and Nissan also pleased with pleasant behavior, but there are comments. “Cobalt” is subject to longitudinal buildup, and too many vibrations are transmitted to the “Almera” steering wheel (expert estimates of cars are at the end of the article).

DAY FOUR: NOT RUBBER

Nothing seemed to portend trouble. At the pre-launch inspection, they used to add 500 g of oil to the Chevrolet engine, as much as the first time that Nissan-Almera demanded. At the same time, the Citroen supercharged engine, which we unanimously predicted the most serious oil consumption before starting, did not ask for a drop for three full days! Probably, the fact is that the C4 going for 200 km / h supports sparing 4, 500 rpm in sixth gear. Honor and praise to the engineers who managed to make a box with a motor so well and correctly select gear ratios.

Alas, the good news for the “Frenchman” ended there. The cobblestone tests seem to have done their job by squaring a few wheels. Gradually, the Citroen pilots again felt the growing vibrations on the steering wheel, resulting in an unexpected rupture of the rear left wheel at a speed of 200 km / h. The driver coped and caught the car …

In general, Thursday definitely did not work out for the rear left wheels. They went to sleep with the hope that the final day would be easier.

It remains to hold out a little more than ten hours. The mood in the camp is fighting, people and cars are ready for the final breakthrough. Today, a half liter of oil was added to the Cobalt engine at once. And again, not a gram - in C4. What surprises will the testees give us after the second series of challenging cobblestone tests?

The first half of the day the trinity departed exemplary. Citroen pilots continued to rejoice at the behavior of the car on their native tires, the Cobalt showed the lowest fuel consumption in the whole week (15.5 liters), and Nissan still calmly wrapped kilometers, approaching a practically guaranteed victory. Fate threw another fortress just a couple of hours before the finish - at C4, the front left wheel mount was loosened. We were lucky - the pilot quickly felt a change in the behavior of the car, stopped and called for help.

So they finished: “Nissan” - the preliminary winner of the championship, “Citroen” - albeit with penalty minutes, but received as a result of external influences - the second. The Chevrolet was recognized as the third in terms of the set of faults: from the first day the error (P0660 index) annoyed me, and now and then ignited the Check engine - that is, the car was on and finished with a malfunction; oil was oozing from the machine and the level indicator of fuel was heavily lying. To approve the results, it remained to go through a formal, seemingly final inspection. Having examined Citroën and Chevrolet, our technical experts did not find anything new. But Nissan Almera gathered all the participants of the marathon under the flyover, and an awkward pause hung over the camp.

We saw this: the aerodynamic shield damaged by flying stones under the bottom of the Almera began to touch the right brake hose at a speed. And as a result, he prettyly rubbed it, in one place, even revealing the cord. Yes Yes! The same hose that we replaced as part of a revocable campaign shortly before the start.

The reasons for the incident lie in the location of the hoses. If on the other two test participants they are neatly hidden inside the wheel, then on the Almera they carelessly stick sideways, being in the risk zone. But this was not the case with the progenitor Logan! They were convinced that they were right by driving the editorial Sandero to the overpass. One can only guess why the design, tested over the years, failed, as soon as Logan became Nissan, but the result for Almera is disappointing.

We could not give a victory to a car with such a dangerous potential malfunction. And since Citroen and Chevrolet faced a number of malfunctions and incidents, the first place at 60 hours - 2013 collegially decided to leave vacant.

This was the ninth marathon “60 hours“Driving”. Full of ups and downs, hopes and disappointments. We sincerely hope that all three manufacturers will take measures to eliminate or minimize the possibility of the occurrence of the faults we have identified. We will be preparing for the tenth anniversary marathon, which, believe me, will be even more interesting!

PS The Chevrolet’s malfunction and the likelihood of unpleasant defects at the Nissan and Citroen (albeit caused to a certain extent by external factors) require a more detailed study than the format of the marathon suggests. Everything is very gray, even an attempt to cheer up the interior with an instrument combination from Aveo did not work. A reflection of the front panel looms in the windshield. In a word, it’s an inexpensive mid-range driver’s toolkit by today's standards, in which the most difficult element is the logic of a trip computer, controlled by four different toggle switches.

This car is not amazing in terms of driving. However, there are, of course, positive components. Comfortable and energy-intensive suspension, for example. Or a modern 6-speed automatic (albeit with extended gears). Reliable, albeit without a twinkle, controllability. Passable brakes. A brisk engine allows Cobalt to successfully compete with competitors.

In conditions of “60 hours”, the suspension does not always cope with the buildup of the body - the machine annoys not only with body rolls, but also with a constant chatter from stern to bow. Add a speed limiter here (175–177 km / h, by speedometer). And the noise of tires penetrating the interior at high speed.

At first glance, directly comparing it with two other cars is embarrassing: the Frenchman is very different in terms of consumer level. In it you feel much more comfortable and protected. Motor juicy, assertive. Echoing his transmission clearly follows every intention of the driver. Cool brakes.

The pendants give the impression of being very comfortable and hardy only at first. Однако на более серьезных колдобинах иногда случаются неприятные пробои передней подвески. Претензии к управляемости возникают в основном на высокой скорости. Даже если учесть фирменную внешность и ярко выраженный багажный практицизм этой модели, народный «Логан» в «Ниссане» видно всюду. Куцая посадка в бесхитростном водительском кресле (хотя, на мой взгляд, здесь все же удобнее, нежели в «Кобальте»). Простенькая панель приборов, такое же управление микроклиматом, наружными зеркалами, стеклоподъемниками. Слишком много для такой машины незатейливых решений.

Автомат «Алмеры» хоть и без изысков, но, в отличие от агрегата «Кобальта», работает совершенно логично. Особенно хорош подбор передаточных чисел. Грамотно распределены возможности двигателя - он везет даже азартнее кобальтовского, хотя потенциальные пределы у того лучше. Интересна инженерная проработка подвесок. Они ведут себя заметно надежнее при высоких скоростях движения. «Алмера» точнее, удобнее и совершенно не утомляет колебаниями кузова. К тому же «Ниссан» тише своего оппонента, это чувствуется даже на максималке.

«ШЕВРОЛЕ-КОБАЛЬТ»

Руль защищен от вибраций, но ощущаешь дрожь на полу и подушке сиденья. С шумом дела обстоят неплохо, обивки ведут себя довольно тихо; если что и громыхает, то где-то в багажнике.

Утомляет другое - все та же раскачка. Она сильнее, чем у соперников, причем настолько, что перед знакомыми колдобинами приходится снижать скорость, иначе контакт с поверхностью неизбежен. Неприятна и педаль газа - никак не удается зафиксировать стопу, в результате невольно подгазовываешь вместе с колебаниями машины. Кроме этого коробка «Кобальта» не тормозит на затяжных спусках. В общем, «Кобальт» оставил впечатление сырой модели.

«СИТРОЕН-С4 СЕДАН»

Очень неплохая вибро- и шумозащищенность. В машине можно не напрягаясь разговаривать, слушать музыку. Конечно, есть вибрации на полу, просачиваются они и на подушку сиденья, но в целом приглушены.

Подвески хорошо справляются с разбитой дорогой: достаточная энергоемкость, отсутствие вертикальной и боковой раскачки. Поначалу вздрагиваешь лишь на глубокой поперечной волне, да и то в основном опасаясь за большой передний свес кузова. Кажется - зацепишь. Тем не менее на булыжнике «Ситроен» лучший. Только расстраивают скрипы и шумы, появившиеся уже после 3 часов нелегкого маршрута.

«НИССАН-АЛМЕРА»

Изначально вибрации от булыжников просто выбивают из колеи, причем не только водителя, но и мультимедийную систему. Увы, это совершенно другая жизнь. Руль мелко дрожит, щекоча, а потом и раздражая ладони; в конце часовой смены от бесконечной тряски немеют руки.

We take part for the first time in the annual resource test “60 hours at the wheel”. It was very interesting to watch at the training ground speeding cars, short pit stops, quick refueling and changing tires. There was a feeling that you are present at real car racing.

Separately, I want to say warm words to the journalists of the publication, who for a week without stopping, regardless of weather conditions, fatigue and even with a certain risk to life (after all, anything can happen on the road) continued testing. We can say that this was a resource test not only for cars, but also for people …

For Citroen, participating in such a marathon is very important. After all, we started the production in Kaluga of the first car made specifically for Russia - this is the C4 Sedan model. The machine showed itself on the good side in difficult, I would even say, extreme operating conditions. We all - Citroen employees, engineers in Russia and France, and factory employees - are looking forward to detailed research on the test results. All information received and the opinions of the pilots will be necessarily analyzed and taken into account.

In my opinion, the “60 hours at the wheel” marathon is a project that is interesting and relevant primarily for manufacturers. This test allows you to evaluate the car, see how it behaves under constant ultra-high loads that simulate extreme operating conditions. Therefore, I decided to attend the Chevrolet-Cobalt test in order to personally see how our new product behaves under the stressful conditions of testing at the test site, assess the potential of the car, and identify its strengths and weaknesses.

During the test, the Check engine warning light came on for no apparent reason. After diagnosing the car, we detected damage to the intake manifold air flap valve connector. This does not affect the safety of movement and the operation of components and assemblies. But the error issued should not unnerve the car owner, so we will pay special attention to the build quality of this unit both in the production process and at the stage of output control.

A similar situation occurred with the damage to the seal of the oil filler plug of the gearbox, manifested during the tests. There have been no such complaints regarding already used cars, therefore we believe that this is an isolated case.

Also, as part of the test, the fuel level sensor was criticized, but during the diagnosis by specialists of the service station, this problem was not identified. We assume that the incorrect operation of the sensor is associated with the peculiarities of the vehicle moving along an arc with large constant lateral accelerations during the tests. However, we will pay attention to the fact of an error.

We intend to study all the information received about the results of the Zarulevsky test together with representatives of production and quality control to make adjustments to the production work, if necessary, which will eliminate the occurrence of the mentioned problems in the future.
