As it turned out, the ride, and most importantly the turn, is really faster on EfficientGrip Performance tires. My instructor made every maneuver at speeds at least 20-30 km / h higher than I could do. However, as follows from the explanations of GoodYear experts, speed was by no means the main task when creating a new generation of two new models of summer tires EfficientGrip Performance and EfficientGrip Compact, which we were shown at the company's training ground in French Mireval.

The first model, which will soon be available in 68 sizes, of which 28 in the UHP class, is designed for powerful cars of the middle and upper classes. According to the EU tire label, it corresponds to class A in terms of wet grip and B in terms of rolling resistance. When it was created, special attention was paid to achieving the necessary indicators to increase fuel economy and efficiency when braking on wet road surfaces. A decrease in fuel consumption is achieved, first of all, by a decrease in rolling resistance, which was demonstrated in the comparative test. It was a roll of two VW Golfs on a 270-meter track with a 3% slope.

To enhance the contrast, the Goodyear team did not put any of their real competitors to the test, but “shod” one of the Golf in Chinese Infinity tires. How correct such a comparison is, let us leave it to the conscience of the organizers, but the result was obvious - by the end of the race, a car on EfficientGrip Performance tires was several tens of meters ahead of the opponent. The time gain from Golf in GoodYear tires was 8.79 and 9.23 seconds in options with and without loading. But, as GoodYear representatives explained to us, even if a product of a more prominent manufacturer acted as a competitor tire, the advantage of EfficientGrip Performance would be noticeable - these tires show rolling resistance an average of 23% lower than the products of four other world leading tire manufacturers.

This low rolling resistance was the result of using a new rubber compound formula that reduces the heating of the undercut groove of the tire tread. In addition to the composition of the rubber, a special CoolCushion Layer layer is responsible for maintaining the temperature of the tire and the air inside it, which allows you to evenly distribute the temperature and reduce the heating of the tire surface.

The GoodYear representative hastened to dispel some concerns about the durability of a tire with such rolling resistance indicators, focusing on its development called WearControl, which provides uniform tire wear, while simultaneously improving its wet grip and maintaining tire performance over the entire life of the tire.

A test was arranged in a similar way, which should rather be called a demonstration of GoodYear EfficientGrip Performance's ability to resist aquaplaning when hit at a speed of 90 km / h. Only this time we tested these properties on a special ring with a “flooded” area. The same Golf on Chinese tires when hit on the aquaplaning site carried sideways on a pair of hulls. In a situation on a real road, this would mean an imminent accident with rather serious consequences. In fairness, it is worth noting that the car with GoodYear tires did not completely resist the trajectory, but the lateral displacement was significantly smaller. Compared with the performance of the main competitor - Michelin, the GoodYear characteristics in the hydroplanning test are as follows:

To improve the braking properties of the new items in it, they used modern ActiveBraking technology, which involves three-dimensional meshing of blocks. At the time of braking, it improves the contact of the tire tread with the road, which reduces the braking distance. In turn, the use of closed, i.e. without full cuts, longitudinal ribs increases the toughness of the tread structure, which improves the response to steering turns and overall handling. The result of these innovations was evaluated in dry and wet areas on a special vehicle in which the robot activated the brake pedal with a dosed effort. And here, as in previous tests, the class difference between a cheap Chinese product and a premium product was demonstrated. The difference in speed at which you can stop the car on GoodYear tires and the car on Chinese Infinity tires turned out to be monstrous - more than 50 km / h!

Another novelty - EfficientGrip Compact, which will be delivered to the market in 26 sizes with a landing diameter of 13 to 15 inches, we have tested already in the conditions of public roads. In most sizes, these tires correspond to class B in terms of grip on wet roads and C for rolling resistance according to the EU mark. For them, GoodYear representatives picked up a highway with alternating asphalt and dirt roads. This was supposed to show the excellent characteristics of the novelty in terms of noise. And in order to demonstrate in real conditions what an important role the improvement of rolling resistance characteristics can play as a “carrier”, the Toyota Auris hybrid was used. Hugh Depré, GoodYear brand in EMEA, explains:

- EfficientGrip Compact tires are designed for a very important segment of the market - compact and compact city cars. In Europe, more attention is being paid to them, and the demand for tires for them is growing.

Rubber really turned out to be very quiet. Even on such a “rattle” as Auris, the 68 dB indicator made it possible to ride with very good acoustic comfort. The grip of the tire on a narrow and winding gravel track was also up to par. This is achieved thanks to a more effective tread geometry. Its rigid construction reduces the deformation of the rubber components of the tire and prevents energy dissipation, and the wider shoulder blocks increase the contact patch during braking and increase lateral stiffness, making cornering more efficient.

But the biggest surprise was the fuel consumption - for some crews it was less than 4 liters per hundred kilometers. Considering that both tires are already being delivered to Russia this spring, such indicators can be a good argument in favor of GoodYear products. In any case, it will be very interesting to look at their results on domestic roads.
