The developers had just such a task - to modernize Kalina as much as possible, while leaving it in the price range between Grant and Prior. Moreover, all applied solutions must be verified many times. POWER UNITS
With the change of generations, Kalina completely updated the palette of motors and gearboxes. Low-priced equipment will get a 1.6-liter 87-horsepower VAZ-21116 engine with a lightweight connecting rod and piston group, which replaced the previous eight-valve unit with “heavy” pistons (ЗР, 2012, No. 4).
To separate the engines in power, the engine of the same volume, but with a sixteen-valve head, made an adjustable intake, adding not only forces (up to 106 hp), but also thrust at low revs. I managed to drive a few laps around the training ground at Kalina with the new VAZ-21127: in acceleration dynamics I did not feel any serious changes, but the elasticity got better - in general, the top remained and the bottom appeared. The motor picks up already from 1600-1700 rpm and allows you to switch less frequently - it is comfortable on the highway, convenient in the city. The only drawback is that the owner is forced to pay a higher tax annually, because the power has exceeded one hundred forces. However, these motors are designed for luxury trim levels, and their customers can overpay a little.
Both units are paired with a new five-speed cable-driven mechanics (ЗР, 2013, No. 1). By the way, in the spirit of modern trends, the driver now helps to change gears electronically. In my opinion, it is a little addictive with the moment of switching - with a quiet ride, I will switch to higher gear a little earlier. So far, only the former sixteen-valve 1.6-liter without an adjustable inlet, with a capacity of 98 “horses”, has made friends with the four-speed Jatko automatic machine. "Viburnum" with a 106-horsepower engine will receive it no earlier than next year.

PENDANTS
On the front suspension, the new Kalina is unified with the Grant. The design differs from the previous generation by a caster increased to 2º45 ', a thicker stabilizer (diameter 22 mm instead of 20 mm), altered characteristics of springs and shock absorbers. The back was tightened a bit to reduce roll and make the car more stable in turns. For this, the diameter of the stabilizer was increased from 14 to 17 mm.
In addition, by the end of summer, a new version of the suspension will be prepared for Kalina, which they are working on with Renault. The task is to make the car more seamless to drive and at the same time improve ride smoothness. Approximately 2 kg / s² increased the stiffness of the front and rear springs, optimized the damping characteristics of the shock absorbers. The back of the course buffer was lengthened to give the suspension a progressive action in compression. In other words, the chassis will remain comfortable with small vertical movements and will become more rigid and energy-intensive at the end of the course. In addition, the silent block of the elastic beam was modernized. Now he has the same stiffness in all planes. The replacement part will be less pliable in the vertical direction for better stability and controllability, and in the longitudinal - softer in order to more effectively smooth out irregularities, dampen noise and vibration coming to the body.

STEERING
From the beginning of production, all “viburnum” will be equipped with a “short” steering rack (3.1 steering turns from lock to lock) and an electric power amplifier. The latter is supplied mainly by the Korean company Mondo. The amplifier was changed settings, this made the control more sensitive at low steering angles. Accuracy was added by a new steering gear with a modified mount to the body. His right support is still attached through a rubber silent block to the front shield, and the left is bolted through two eyes. As a result, the rigidity of the entire steering system increased by 25–30%.
Here's what I felt when I tried a new steering: the “Kalina's” branded thoughtfulness left, it responds faster and more clearly to the driver’s commands. Therefore, you are more willing to go around small bumps on the road, there are no unpleasant yaw at high speeds. At the same time, the increase in stiffness did not affect comfort - vibration and shock from bumps are not transmitted to the steering wheel.

BRAKES
All produced "viburnum" (starting with the "Norma" set) will be equipped with an anti-lock system and emergency brake assist. For the new model, Bosch supplies the latest system of the ninth generation. It can be supplemented with the ESC stabilization program - it is present in the list of options for luxury versions.
To improve braking performance, we changed the material of the linings on the front pads. The world-famous Ferodo company will deliver parts to the conveyor, and in the future, possibly, the Russian enterprise TIIR will also join. Together with Renault, they are engaged in the selection of the characteristics of a vacuum amplifier (it will appear around the end of summer) in order to reduce the pedal effort and make it more informative. These two changes will allow Kalina to rise in brake efficiency and ease of use by one notch with Logan, one of the most balanced cars in the budget model segment.

NOISE AND VIBRATIONS
Despite the improvements, Kalina lost to many competitors in acoustic comfort. Therefore, we paid special attention to the fight against internal noise. To muffle the sound of the engine, we increased the noise insulation area on the front panel and applied material with better damping properties. The carpet of the floor, covering the lower part of the body from the front panel to the rear seats, was also recycled.
So that the sound penetrating from outside does not resonate in the body cavities, all technological holes intended for processing by anticorrosive were closed with bituminous plugs: in thresholds, seat brackets, cross-section of the tailgate panel. Foam or polyurethane foam inserts were placed in the hidden cavities of the middle and rear pillars, as well as next to the hood hinges - there is an area that is acoustically transparent for noise to enter the windshield frame.
Alas, a full-fledged test of the new Kalina did not work: the author’s time and capabilities were limited. Snow-covered speed ring of the landfill does not allow to fully evaluate the car. Yes, and production models will be different from the "pilot" on which I went. However, the first acquaintance took place, and the pre-production "Kalina" left a generally positive impression. But I will not rush to estimates - I will save up to a test drive on public roads.

The VAZ-21127 engine is equipped with an adjustable intake. The movement of air in the collector resembles the ebb and flow - part of it is ejected from the cylinder by the valve during the compression stroke, then returns. The air wave pulsating in the inlet pipe can simulate a boost, temporarily increasing the pressure in front of the inlet valve. It is important that she return to the valve at the right time. And since the time during which the valve is open is different at low and at high speeds, channels of an appropriate length or volume are required for an effective workflow. Therefore, the VAZ-21127 has an original intake system with a resonant chamber and a damper system. It is she who increases the volume of the inlet channel at low speeds and contributes to a better filling of the cylinder. Thus, it was possible to obtain up to 10 N · m of torque increase in the range of 1000–3500 rpm. At higher revolutions, the flaps cover the access of air into the resonance chamber, thereby reducing the volume of the inlet channel.
