CityGID, Navitel, and Yandex. Tracks were selected as experimental programs. The first two are a single set of navigation with support for monitoring traffic jams, the last is an application to the Garmin instrument maps. Of course, we know about the existence of the proprietary Yandex. Navigator. However, the chosen option was bribed with a non-standard implementation: information about the traffic situation comes through the radio channel. And this is not only free, but also gives independence from the sometimes unstable connection to the Internet.
The culmination of a multi-day test was a confrontation. On the appointed day, four crews left the editorial office. Three got newfangled gadgets, and the most experienced armed with the usual paper atlas. Having traveled about 70 km through traffic jams in the capital and passing several control points, each of the participants, in addition to the test time and distance, brought his opinion on the work of the assistant.
THINK YOURSELF
Already at the third intersection after the start, Navitel offered a rather strange maneuver through a parallel street. But there was no traffic jam right on the course. “Miraculous means working,” the driver thought. Travel experience suggested that the short route chosen by the device would not save time on its way to the first control point. And so it happened: a net loss not only to peers, but also to the atlas.
Navitel

However, these details will become known later, but for now the navigator leads the car to the second point, again striking straightforwardness. The path to the third point at once dotted all i. An incomprehensible hook in the route could be attributed to a detour of traffic congestion if it had not led to the enthusiastic highway! Metropolitan drivers usually go to this highway only if the destination does not imply a different road. As a result, the loss of time in the two-kilometer line.

With the same equanimity, the electronic mind left the helmsman alone with a traffic jam of 5 km on Leninsky Prospekt. Really before the test did not set the correct settings? No, the necessary checkmarks in the menu are affixed, and the icon on the display shines green: “data updated”.
Navitel

We turn off route guidance, peer into the street lines on the map, but we still do not find traffic jams. I admit that the system was faulty, but the driver wasn’t in the know. And let the readers not be confused by the small difference in the final figures. On the day of the comparative test, the capital stood at only 6 points out of ten. In the worst situation, the system was also blind. Alas, the Navitel rubles spent on mobile Internet did not turn into profit.
TURN UP
“CityGID” worked out the first two stages perfectly, having led the ward car along the best route. The third segment, the most corky, revealed the nature of the program in all its glory. The abundance of the proposed twists does not get confused for long! The navigator does not take far from the main highways, but is panicky afraid of red sections on the map.
CityGID

"CityGUID" "CityGUID"
The proposal to "leave the gardens" sounds even at the entrance to traffic lights, in front of which five to seven cars have accumulated in the lane. But narrow lanes sometimes take more time than waiting for a green traffic signal on the avenue! With an average load of roads, the assistant’s manners are annoying, but at peak times, the opinion changes to the opposite.
CityGID

"CityGUID" "CityGUID"
“CityGUID” is the only one of all when laying routes that sees the difference in the workload of the main line and understudy. One day he found a path through a 9-point city. Having tuned in for two hours of pushing in traffic jams, I was pleasantly surprised: I was home twice as fast.
CityGID

True, the application is by no means sinless. Typical proposals for many navigation programs to turn where it is forbidden were made here. Being installed on a smartphone, the application lost its satellite several times, did not keep up with the car in the corners and for some reason swallowed the beginning of voice prompts. But of the three tested navigators with this, it is most convenient to go without laying a route, focusing on the situation. The display of the traffic situation is bright and clear.
WEIGHTED APPROACH
The third test participant combines immediately two big names: “Garmin” and “Yandex”. Alas, the first one tarnished his reputation with ignorance of the street on which there was one of the intermediate points. The rest of the device liked the clear work without too much fuss. So unobtrusive that there is nothing to say.

If the situation changes while moving towards the target, the navigator will offer an alternative route, highlighting on the screen possible options with the estimated duration and length. The final choice is up to the user. Take a look at the results in the tables: choosing longer routes in the second and third stages, the Yandex. Traffic jams”in only one case turned out to be slower than“CityGID”, and even there it lost less than 10%.

At maximum points at the traffic lights, the driver was still asked to stay on the main thoroughfares, bypassing only very standing places. The original RDS data reception system did not fail. The radio antenna is mounted in the power wire, so part of it should be placed at the top of the panel, and not immediately hidden in its bowels or down. The only inconvenience awaits the user at the time of the first start of the device: our instance expected a signal for almost 15 minutes.

EVERYONE ARRIVED?
And what about our poor fellow with a map? Alas, his bets were played only on the free roads. Loss is even more evident in periods of heavy traffic, when knowledge of the usual route does not help. It is difficult to name the winner in the dispute between CityGID and the Garmin tandem - Yandex. Traffic. The latter works great with an average level of congestion. The dexterity of the first rewards him with victory in a frozen city (of course, if there is the possibility of a detour physically). It is also more convenient to use it for normal viewing of traffic jams. “Garmin”, alas, does not have the same information content.

When deciding in favor of one of the systems (we have covered far from everything), remember: they are capable of miracles, but small and not every day. On an unfamiliar route - they will help. But with daily trips to work, they are unlikely to reveal something new to the driver.

“It seems to have been no longer a child, but I still hope that magic will save me from everyday hassle. But it's time to get used to it, that miracles happen only in fairy tales. Although we must pay tribute to the device: without it, I would go the longer way, I would not look for detours of traffic jams and I would certainly arrive at the meeting place much later. So I won’t call this device a magician, but I will advise you as a good assistant when traveling around a busy city.”
Kirill Mileshkin:

“Frankly, I did not expect such a difference in the quality of the work of popular services. My unequivocal verdict: useful! Moscow as a whole, not to mention frequent routes, I know pretty well. So I personally prefer the service not with a competent detour algorithm, but with true information about Navitel traffic jams, visual display and fast loading. And I’ll choose the route myself. With such requests I have enough of the well-known free application."

“I traveled all my life in the old fashioned way, it’s difficult for me to master the advanced abilities of new devices. Of course, the flaws of the classic atlas are obvious, and the final time proves this. If I were younger, I would certainly take advantage of the fruits of progress. But with a number of reservations: I know many examples when the services of navigators turned out to be bearish - both in city trips and in distant ones. So I’m better looking through paper rather than electronic pages.”
Svetlana Hodos:

“As a whole, I liked the new assistant. It is only necessary to get used to its features and character, to understand where and what mistakes he makes. Only after that we will talk about the degree of trust in him. As with a regular navigation program, system prompts are a recommendation, not a complete fix. Moreover, no navigator will ever recognize a guaranteed traffic jam on my nightly route. But, of course, I will leave the application downloaded for the test to myself.”
