Why do we carry a fire extinguisher in a car? Often, for the same purpose, for which bourgeois - that old, that present - fill bookshelves with beautiful roots: we, they say, are cultured people! No one delves into whether this can be read. In the same way, few people worry whether it will be possible to extinguish the flame with this red object. Indifference - you can’t say otherwise - also shod manufacturers: it is easier and cheaper to produce fire extinguisher models than workable products.
Calling the minds of fellow citizens is somehow embarrassing, although I can quite consider myself experienced in this regard. They pulled me out of a burning car, the apartment from the Rubin-714 television burned down. That is why I was pleased to respond to the invitation of the Soyuz 01 association to get acquainted with the results of the second all-Russian tests of fire extinguishers.
ALLE OP-2
Experts checked even huge products under the OP-35 index, as well as their colleagues charged with carbon dioxide - one and a half hundred samples from 12 manufacturers. The average motorist is most suitable for two-liter powder fire extinguishers OP-2. Two-liter - because they recommend all kinds of instructions (we will return to their status), powder ones - because of their prevalence and cheapness. It would be more correct to talk not about two-liter, but about two-kilogram fire extinguishers, because a deuce in the name indicates just the mass of powder, but it was the first option that took root in everyday life.
You have to pay for cheapness. Of the minuses of powder fire fighters, I note that they are pretty dirty, unlike those charged with carbon dioxide. The pros say: if you extinguish a burning engine with a powder fire extinguisher, then the machine will need a “heart transplant” in any case, regardless of the degree of fire damage: the powder tightly sticks to the metal. But from carbon dioxide, you can get frostbite by accidentally grabbing a metal bell in your hand - oh, very cold.
So, today - only about the OP-2. Such a whole football team, and, in the spirit of national tradition, was frankly weak. Out of 11 “players” only five heard about the fire, the rest never got up from the bench. But they demanded money …
The results of comprehensive tests are in the table. Each player’s dossier is pictured.
SAY "A"
In general, everything is sad. Individual copies, according to the official conclusion of the State Fire Service of the Ministry of Emergencies of the Russian Federation, are generally potentially dangerous. They simply refuse to work at the moment when they are asked for help. In some, instead of a normal powder, almost sand was poured from the playground, in others there is no pressure, in the third it is corrupted by a threaded connection, in the fourth someone is refilled with gas - its volume is not enough for normal extinguishing.
The main problem is in crappy powder. Manufacturers, as a rule, know very well where and on whom the hat is lit - the most “honest” ones seem to accidentally forget to indicate its name on the label. The most cunning write the correct name, but continue to pour something cheap into the cylinders. And the difference in price between good and inexpensive is fivefold. The main active component of ABCE powders is ammonium phosphate, and ALL powders have cheap sodium bicarbonate. Therefore, first they reduce the content of these same phosphates, then instead of EVERYTHING they write ABSE - of course, in general.
Another way to save money is to reduce the size of the container: for example, from 2 to 1.6 kg.
QUESTION QUESTIONS
Are we required to carry a fire extinguisher at all? And which? And where to keep it? Once, my colleague and I already explored this issue (ЗР, 2008, No. 11).
In traffic rules it is better not to climb - you will not find mutual understanding. Unless in the “List of faults and conditions …” you will see clause 7.7 prohibiting the operation of the vehicle without a first-aid kit, fire extinguisher and emergency triangle. Well, we get a red spray can with the inscription “Fire extinguisher”: even if aerosol, even empty … Can I go?
An experienced traffic cop will say something about fire safety standards - NPB 166–97. But it will not say that Appendix No. 4 (“Use of fire extinguishers on vehicles”) to it is recommended. We found a certain set of rules of the joint venture 9.13130.2009, in which there is Appendix B with the same name. But it is only a recommendation! These documents contain references to volume or mass - 2 l or 2 kg. It is advised to use "powder, gas or water-based charge" fire extinguishers, but it is immediately indicated that carbon dioxide can also be used if, say, they put out a fire no worse than their counterparts. But how can the buyer find out?
And it is also forbidden to put all this household in the trunk! And even the bracket is mentioned - they say, attach only to it!
In my opinion, all this, firstly, is unprofessional and, secondly, is outdated. Let the authors of these instructions sit in any modern sedan and indicate a place for a fire extinguisher. Moreover, they will not just indicate, but explain how to reconcile their recommendations with the categorical prohibition of the traffic police to make any changes to the design provided by the car manufacturer. Simply put, I have no right to drill holes and screw the bracket somewhere! One thing remains: throw a fire extinguisher under your feet or on the rear shelf. And to wait when during a sharp braking or, worse, during an accident, a massive shell will break either glass or someone else's head.
In a word, nothing has changed. Personally, I drive a fire extinguisher in the trunk. Moreover, in the most visible place, and not somewhere under the spare tire (yes, he would not have got into it). Fastening - a rubber belt with a buckle, detachable in one motion. If I think of something better, I’ll tell you.

STATISTICS
According to the Soyuz 01 association, approximately 100 people per million people die in fires in Russia. For comparison: in the USA, Czech Republic, Poland - from 10 to 20, in France and Great Britain - from 6 to 9, and in Switzerland, Holland, Germany and Italy - no more than 5 people. In our country, one car burns out every 20 minutes.
AND WHY ALL THIS?
To avoid problems with the traffic police, it is enough to have on board any souvenir wick with the correct inscription. The production of fire extinguishers is ruined by mediocre laws encouraging the release of marriage. As a result, we carry outright rubbish in the car exclusively for traffic cops. Or who is doing the inspection there now?
Colleagues, try to get yourself a normal fire extinguisher! And let it never come in handy for you!
QUESTION ANSWER
What do the symbols like ALL or ABSE mean?
Fires are different - firewood or, say, gasoline can burn. These symbols just indicate the types of fires that this fire extinguisher can fight.
The following are distinguished:
A - combustion of solids
B - burning of liquid substances
C - combustion of gaseous substances
D - burning of metals or organometallic substances (special-purpose fire extinguishers are needed)
E - ignition of electrical equipment under voltage
For cars, the classes A, B, C and E are considered the most relevant. Therefore, a fire extinguisher charged with ABCE powder can be considered universal, unlike ALL. But the latter is several times cheaper, and therefore many manufacturers turn a blind eye to the weaknesses of their products. Sellers do the same.
Do I need to look closely at the grade of powder indicated on the fire extinguisher?
It is just a must! If instead of the mark on the label simply symbols (for example, ABCE) are indicated, then there is a direct indication of fraud - do not buy this! We note several brands of good powder and its manufacturers: Vekson-ABC 50, manufacturer - ZAO Ecohimmash (test report dated 7.02.2012); Vekson-ABC 25, manufacturer - ZAO Ecohimmash (test report dated 2012-06-04); Volgalit-AVS, manufacturer - ZAO V. V. P. (test report dated 2012-19-04); "PFKChS", the manufacturer - ZAO "FC" (test report dated 7.02.2012).
Are there powder extinguishers in plastic cases?
Yes unfortunately. All that fell into the hands of experts turned out to be "pots" for storing powder; such products were recognized as an overt parody of fire fighting equipment. We do not have information about quality products with such cases.
What is more reasonable - to recharge or buy a new one?
It’s easier to get a new one. Recharge points for fire extinguishers today are almost uncontrolled, and therefore there is no point in wasting time and money on such a procedure.
