Once upon a time there was no sausage, cars were a luxury, not a means of standing in traffic jams, and party committees ruled the world … And the terrible phrase - “Violation of GOST (who knows, the State Standard) is prosecuted by the law” prevailed. Times have changed, sausage has appeared, and with it traffic jams and cars. Very different people began to rule the world. They care about us very much, and in the heat of their unbridled care they decided - why should we regulate something? Let the market regulate! Otherwise, evil officials, checking compliance with something incomprehensible GOST, will take bribes, strangle business, will not allow such a free market to develop freely! So, all for us, the orphans and the wretched. Care must be very much appreciated and rejoiced. But is there anything? And if you take a closer look, are our caring authorities worried about us? Let’s try to figure out what has been done, what has turned out and who benefits from it … We won’t go far - let’s take the burning topic of automotive fuel quality, because it concerns each of us, directly or indirectly.
Here we take the old GOST of the times of terrible and cruel - already in 1977. This is GOST 2084–77 “Car gasolines. Technical conditions. " What was normalized by this document? And we will compare it with the only binding document that regulates the parameters of fuel left to us by caring managers - the Technical Regulation “On the requirements for automotive and aviation gasoline, diesel and marine fuel, jet engine fuel and heating oil”.
By the way, it will be interesting to trace the evolution of these requirements in time and space … Therefore, we add to the comparison table also GOST transitional times - GOST R 51105–97.
Red in the table is “administrative obstacles” in the concept of current officials, green is freedom! As you can see, the table “turns green” and “turns green” as we move towards freedom and democracy.

And now - some comments that should shed light on the reasons for such concern for us sinners … And we will take into account that now any state inspector can check the quality of gasoline ONLY for compliance with the Technical Regulations.

So, the main parameter of gasoline is its octane number. After all, this is the main characteristic that we focus on before putting the gun into the tank! It always seemed that the octane number was unshakable - what else should be normalized? But now - it’s not then! Now, according to the wiseacres of our government, this parameter can simply be declared. Therefore, the name of the AI-95 gasoline may not be perceived as a characteristic of its motor qualities, but simply … as a brand sign! And what will they pour on us - the 80th or the 102nd, this is the seller’s conscience.
Where did this idea come from? Everything is very simple - this is a consequence of the beginning of the work of the Customs Union. The old edition of the Technical Regulations, with the light hand of the next bossy genius, left all gasolines with an octane rating below 95 outside the scope of the law. Here, in Russia. And other members of the TS, the bosses were more intelligent - they did not allow such nonsense. And in order not to admit their short-sightedness, so to speak, they decided to contradict the laws with a simple stroke of the marker - they extinct the OCh (octane number) from the list of mandatory controlled parameters! In our opinion, the obvious stupidity of the authorities is not being corrected, but is covered up with even greater stupidity.
The result - according to recent examinations, a mess in the fuel market began to happen completely. If large fuel companies of well-known brands, despite the wise instructions from above, sell gasoline with an OCH corresponding to what is written on the column, then any “container-franchised” trifle under the guise of the 95th can even turn off the defective 80th! And we met this … And the funny thing is that there’s nothing to attract them with, according to the rest of the TR parameters, gasoline is quite air-conditioned, and you cannot check the octane number!
Have you heard horror stories about stuck valves? Dead piston rings? Burnt pistons? And those killed by the same engines? The reason for this trouble is often the presence of a large amount of tar in the fuel. Previously, it was strictly controlled, but now it is recognized as optional. Who benefits from this? High-quality, clean gasoline, in which there are no tar, requires serious production technologies. Leave this parameter in TR - most of the semi-legal refineries driving a dirty straight run of gas condensate would be out of work. Which is easier - to modernize production or just rewrite a piece of paper with requirements that limit the content of resins? And what will happen to the cars - who cares when the money is dripping?
Similarly, with the parameters of the fractional composition, the induction period of gasolines, its acidity and tests on a copper plate. To make it clear, the fractional composition determines the quality of mixture formation in the engine, affecting the engine economy, its power parameters, starting properties at low and, conversely, high temperatures. The induction period characterizes the stability of the properties of gasoline during prolonged storage. And what can be the stability of gasolines, which were obtained by adding an unmeasured amount of all kinds of alcohols and ethers? They are volatile, by the way! Acidity and tests on a copper plate characterize the corrosive activity of the fuel, therefore, affect the resource of the motor. But is it all interesting to us? But for the oil industry, the implementation of these standards is very outrageous - again, new investments are required. Yes, not to their "popular" football clubs, yachts and castles, but to production … Fu, what prose - down with them from the Regulations!
The same with density! Indeed, when it was thoughtlessly entered into the list of controlled parameters, it is not clear that it became difficult to pour into gasoline when it was “alloyed” (the process of drawing it out with the help of various additives is so often called smart) - what if it becomes too heavy? Alcohols and ethers have a large density! Yes, and they sell tons of oil refineries, and gas stations - liters! So is it more profitable for them, light or heavy fuel? But the engine, especially the injection one, does not like either light or heavy fuel - the control program is calibrated for volumetric rather than mass flow rates, which means it is based on some specific fuel density. And if it seriously differs from this reference density, the brains of the motor begin to fool - a feedback system is constantly working according to the signal of the residual oxygen sensor. The motor twitches, more fuel is consumed, and toxicity is not all right. But who cares? But another administrative barrier was removed - you can happily report to the premiere on Twitter!
