The southwestern part of the country, where the largest cities of Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam are located, is an almost continuous urbanized zone. Therefore, despite the excellent road network, which is considered one of the best in Europe, you won’t drive there very much during rush hour.

In cities, the problem is compounded by love and fidelity to cultural traditions. The cities are old, with narrow streets in historic quarters and also penetrated by canals. A huge number of Dutch people have been using bicycles for daily commuting. The city transport network is also very convenient (buses, trams, and the metro in Amsterdam and Rotterdam). But this, of course, only partially solves the problem of motor vehicles in cities - because, for example, in Amsterdam, a lot of people still come to work, to shop, and to have fun from other cities of the country by car, even from abroad. And the authorities in Holland are not idle, the problem of congestion in city streets is being solved quite effectively.

I recently visited my friend, who lives in a suburb of The Hague, and we went for a day to Amsterdam. The car was left in a large multi-story parking lot in a relatively new quarter, far beyond the historical part.

In the city center there are also large parking lots, but there you have to pay from 3.40 to 4 euros per hour. We arrived in the city for the whole day, so leaving the car in the center, we would have to pay about 30 euros, or even more …

You can, of course, leave the car somewhere on the street. The right to such a parking will cost 26.4 euros (having bought a special card, you can leave the car anywhere from 9 am to 7 pm, “night” rates already vary depending on the area - from 4.4 to 17.6 euros, the daily allowance a ticket will cost almost 40 euros). But in this case, the problem of finding free space remains.

Amsterdam residents living in the city center have a preferential right to park (one "iron horse" for one family). It’s not so easy to put a car in the old narrow streets so that it doesn’t interfere with the passage, and the passage, so the townspeople squeeze their cars mostly along the canals and on the bridges above them. Even for a bicycle in the center of Amsterdam, it is not always easy to find a place - the embankments, as well as the sidewalks on the bridges through the canals, are completely forced by two-wheeled vehicles.

Our choice was optimal. Leaving the car in an intercepting parking lot, we paid by the P + R system (Park + Ride) only 8 euros for 24 hours. This amount, as it turned out, also includes free tickets for the bus (or tram) to the center and back - they are issued by parking employees according to the number of passengers in the car. So to the “whip” - the high prices for parking in the city center, there is also a “carrot” in the form of a free pass. Twenty minutes after leaving the multi-story parking, we already saw the views in the heart of the historical part of the Dutch capital …

… A couple of days in the morning went to meet in the center of The Hague. Rush hour and, as luck would have it, rain. He forced even those who usually ride a bicycle to work to change to a car. And despite the wide - three lanes in each direction - track, a little before reaching the goal, we finally got up …

Usually, going to The Hague, my friend parks a car in the courtyard of the office where he used to work - they allow him according to his old friendship. But there was no time for us to wait until the traffic jam resolves and we can reach the treasured courtyard: the meeting was scheduled for exactly 9 hours. We turned to the first parking lot. Getting out of the car, I already imagined how we would go in the pouring rain a few blocks to the place.

“They will give us a lift,” said a friend, as if guessing my thoughts, and went to the employee, next to whom were several tiny electric cars - carts with four seats under a cap made of transparent plastic.

Circling all traffic jams on a nimble, maneuverable typewriter, an employee literally took us five minutes to the place. Exactly at nine! And - completely dry …

This, by the way, was one of my strongest impressions of the everyday life of Holland.
