The enthusiastic reviews of my colleagues have long fueled my interest in the junior crossover of the Bavarian concern, because before meeting with the updated BMW I was enthusiastic. The car promised handling almost like a passenger “unit” and “treshka” in combination with an almost 200-mm ground clearance. In addition, the most powerful diesel version was waiting for me - the 218-horsepower xDrive25d. Tempting, right?
Inspecting the car, I caught myself thinking: I’m hardly going to list what was changed in the exterior. But, I think, few will argue with the fact that the updated crossover has become more harmonious. Thanks for this is the designers, whose pencil got to the bumpers, front and rear optics, as well as side mirrors - turn signal repeaters are now built into their case. Inside, the changes are even smaller: the center console is trimmed with glossy black plastic, and elegant chrome inserts frame the display of the multimedia system.

Settling down in a thick leather chair and setting up the end point of a 150-kilometer route using the iDrive system, I slowly taxi out onto the highway in a suburb of Munich. The high-speed regime here must be strictly observed, therefore, it is forced to suppress the short-term desire to experience the capabilities of a 2-liter twin-engine engine with an impressive (450 Nm) torque. However, it’s nice to drive a crossover at low speeds: well-adjusted efforts on the steering wheel and pedals allow you to merge with the car into a single whole. Road noise is almost inaudible, which cannot be said about the sound of the engine filling the interior even at low revs. I have no doubt that the sound of gasoline versions really caresses the ear, but the voice of a four-cylinder diesel is not so beautiful as to deliberately flaunt it.
“Prepare to turn right,” said the iron woman from the navigation system. I ended up on the autobahn with no speed limits. Here it is, balm for the soul! I did not have time to change lanes to the left, as the speedometer needle crossed the equator, and about fifteen seconds later, the BMW and I were racing at a speed close to the maximum passport speed. The confidence with which X-One holds the line is impressive. Even at speeds of two hundred, the car makes it easy to control itself, and not to the detriment of the ride - at least on a very smooth canvas of the autobahn.

The second half of the route fell on narrow winding paths with variable terrain. And here the BMW X1 is able to give pleasure. And even more than on the high-speed line. I will not argue that the Bavarian crossover is controlled no worse than the car counterparts. This is not true. However, attacking turns on the X-First is very pleasant: even at relatively high speeds, the difference in handling compared to the soplatform "treshka" is minimal.
Sorry, already finished! Having put the electronic selector of the machine in the "parking", I look at the numbers of average fuel consumption with undisguised surprise: 8.2 liters! The eight-speed gearbox does its job perfectly: taking into account the long drive on the autobahn and the active lumbago along the forest highway, the indicator is very good - bravo!

Probably the less powerful diesel versions of the xDrive20d (184 hp), xDrive18d (143 hp) and xDrive16d (116 hp and rear-wheel drive) can demonstrate even more impressive fuel economy. True, they are not going to deliver the last two to the Russian market yet. As for gasoline cars, they, as before, are represented by three 2-liter engines: atmospheric 150-horsepower and two supercharged, with a capacity of 184 and 245 forces. Prices for BMW-X1 start at around 1, 290, 000 rubles.
What do you need - dynamics, economy or some kind of compromise? The engine range provides ample freedom of choice. Despite the excellent dynamic performance, the diesel engine I tested has a very even acceleration response, and therefore the sensations from xDrive25d accelerations are not crazy. Adrenaline injection that accompanies every throttle opening is what you expect from a car with such a sharp chassis, sharpened to enjoy driving. And if I had to choose a BMW X1, I would stop at a gasoline xDrive28i with a 245-horsepower engine. But this is very personal …
