There were three engines in the Tiguan family - a diesel engine and two gasoline engines. Petrol 1.4 TSi has recently become less and less popular, and it has almost ceased to be installed. The loss is insignificant, since this engine was also known as unreliable - it was naughty due to the low quality of Russian fuel, or even broke: due to a jump in the timing chain, the pistons “framed” with valves. The latter happened due to the unsuccessful design of the tensioner, deprived of blocking the counter-flow: when the engine was stopped and, accordingly, zero oil pressure, nothing prevented the plunger from cleaning up, leaving the chain hanging on the sprockets. The next time the engine was started, until the oil pushed the plunger into working condition, everything happened.
The other two engines - diesel 2.0 TDi and petrol 2.0 TSi - turned out to be smarter. And for owners of cars with a 1.4 TSi engine, we’ll give simple advice: in order not to provoke a tensioner, please do not leave the car with the manual gearbox in gear! Sometimes a slight slope is enough for the crankshaft to turn and drown the plunger.
CHANGE FUEL FILTER: DIESEL WOULD KNOW
… that his creation, which became a household name in his own, Rudolph Diesel, honor, will become much more difficult to maintain in the course of evolution. For example, to replace the fuel filter, it is now a pleasure to have a proprietary scanner - with its help, using official technology, the fuel pumping mode is forcibly switched on and air plugs are driven out. Alas, the manufacturer did not provide for a manual booster pump. And what if in the field? Of course, you can do without this stray: unscrewing the screws of the fuel filter cover and removing it, we remove the old filter element and pump out the remaining fuel from the glass, so that when you immerse a new cartridge, do not fill in with diesel fuel everything that is downstream (remember the Archimedes law). Having installed a new filter, we gradually fill the glass with the previously pumped out fuel to the very top, making smoke breaks for impregnating the corrugations. Then we replace the cover and tighten the screws to 5 Nm. Of course, we do not save on the sealing ring. Now, having prayed, we start the engine in the hope that the fuel pump is freaking out. If he chokes on the air - and this happened - only himself remains to blame. The fact is that after replacing the filter element in the service (with a scanner), a mark is made in the brains of the engine control unit, and without this account it is useless to make a complaint to anyone.
The diesel fuel filter is installed under this cover (arrow). The manufacturer categorically does not recommend disconnecting the fuel tubes from the cap, as well as changing the filter yourself

Please note that the main problem with engines with the factory index CLJA is precisely the failure of the fuel equipment. Therefore, before rolling up your sleeves, measure seven times: is it worth it?
Another source of problems is the timing belt. According to the regulations, it is supposed to be changed after 150 thousand km, but in reality they don’t live as much. Do not rely on the instructions, but follow the advice of the masters: if you said that it was time, then you need to change. You yourself are unlikely to be bothered, because the operation is not simple: you need to hang out the power unit and know a number of subtleties, we strongly recommend contacting specialists.
Fortunately, we managed to replace the remaining consumables quite quickly: they spent a total of fifteen minutes on the glow plugs (sooner or later they have to be replaced), the V-ribbed belt and oil.
But there is a serious complaint about replacing the oil: the plastic engine cover has a transition to the oil filler neck in the form of a funnel collecting all the dirt at the bottom. It is necessary to remove the cork, and all this rubbish strives to crumble into the oil cavity. Dealers first blow the funnel with compressed air, and we just advise removing the parasitic part - a rubber seal installed on the neck of the engine (see photo). Then the dirt will have nowhere to accumulate.
REPLACEMENT OF CANDLES OF IGNITION: GASOLINE IN BLOOD
On a CAWA gasoline engine, it is also advisable to remove this seal - a similar design. But here, in addition, there is a restrictive shield at the mouth inlet, which complicates the filling of a fresh portion of oil - it was because of it that the overall rating was lowered, although access to the filter is excellent.
When changing spark plugs, be careful with connectors mounted on a common ramp. They need to be disconnected sequentially, starting from the first cylinder, having previously fed each of the pads to the side of the coil (otherwise you risk breaking the lock).
Although the common ramp with coil connectors has little flexibility, disconnecting the connectors is still inconvenient: if you remove it, it tries to snap back into place. Turnkey candles "on 16"

It is more difficult to replace a fuel filter, and most importantly, more expensive than when working with a diesel engine: a replaceable cartridge is not sold separately, it is replaced only assembled with a fuel level sensor and tubes connecting the assembly to the pump. But the main thing is that it is impossible to replace all this economy without dipping your hands in the tank - but how else to disconnect the tips of the tubes? It is easy to understand that the difficulties arose due to the fact that the gas tank is divided into two halves by the propeller shaft. But why the filter cartridge is not supplied in spare parts, although it is fastened with the usual latches, it remains a mystery.
A chain is installed in the timing drive, according to the regulations, it is necessary to change it (together with tensioners and dampers) every 180 thousand km. Here the manufacturer is reinsured. Considering that there are much more nuances and difficulties in such a mechanism than in a belt drive on a diesel engine, it remains only to wish a happy journey to the service.
CHANGE OF ANTIFREEZE AND OIL IN THE CAT: GENERAL FEATURES
Replacing antifreeze is more difficult than usual, since there are no drain plugs in the system. According to the technology, the lower pipes should be removed from the electric pump (on a diesel engine, in addition, and from the oil heat exchanger), squeezing the antennae of the corresponding plate clamps with pliers. It's a simple matter, but beware of a waterfall of poisonous liquid: prepare precautions and a wide container for catching a wide stream in advance. To dilute the branded concentrate G12 plus plus, we use distilled water: for a moderate climate we mix in the proportion 1: 1, and for severe (up to -40 ° C) we add 3.2 l of distillate to 4.2 l of concentrate.
Being in your right mind, replace the oil in the manual gearbox without problems: the unit has drain and filler (it is also control) plugs. But you will not find the familiar dipstick in the automatic gearbox: the level is checked through the inverted plug of the overflow pipe: if at a temperature of 35–45 ° C (selector in position P) the oil drips from the hole, then everything is normal. No - add a liter of fresh through the same hole and repeat the test. There are four plugs in the rear axle gearbox, since the unit is divided into two zones, with a separate crankcase for the Haldex clutch. Often these plugs confuse and make problems due to oil starvation of one of the mechanisms. Take a look at the photo, then you won’t be mistaken.
The rear axle gearbox plugs are shown with green arrows, and the Haldex couplings are red. Of course, the filler plugs are upper and the drain plugs are lower (formally, they are all disposable)

To access the front pads, a Torx-45 will be required - the design of the mechanism is exactly the same as in Golf VI (ZR, 2012, No. 5): with three-fingered plates, we insert the inner block into the piston, and the outer one, without the plates, into bed staples.
If the machine has an electric handbrake, then it is better not to mess with the replacement of the rear pads, because you need the very “shaman” in the form of a dealer scanner - to use it to instruct electric motors to drown the pistons. And after replacing the pads, he also calibrate the mechanism. Here is another goal for the garage door. And not the first!
"Tiguan" immediately reminded me of the recent hero of this column - "Golf": as if looking in a mirror. The ease of replacing the cabin filter, V-ribbed belt and headlight bulbs is crossed out by ill-conceived access to the headlights and the fuel filter.
