Skoda intrigued for a long time - various conceptual versions of the car were exhibited at international salons every now and then. Not surprisingly, the Rapid will become the first brand car with a new style. No roundness! Angular shapes are everywhere and they are very harmonious. At least there is no heaviness in the exterior. The design is bright, but at the same time recognizable: you can immediately see that in front of you is a Skoda. Another noteworthy point: Rapida has a very rare body type - liftback. That is a hatchback with a tail. Nobody in Europe uses this except the Czechs. What is not a competitive advantage?
Recall that the Octavia Tour has the same body option, to which the new product is ideologically very close. They even have external dimensions that almost match. But if that "Octavia" was frankly cramped, then the "Rapid" - no. He, according to the Czechs, is the champion in reserve space for the knees of the rear passengers. Indeed, there is more space there than not only for classmates, but also for some models with a higher class! True, in terms of height and width, the stock of space does not cause such enthusiasm. The floor tunnel is too big - the third from the back is uncomfortable. In simple trim levels, he does not even have a head restraint. Ventilation deflectors are also lacking - in frost, Kamchatka will be, to put it mildly, not hot. But there are pockets in the doors, two cup holders and four hooks: on the racks and on the ceiling handles. Practical? You have not seen the trunk!
Having opened the fifth door, he already whistled in surprise - he did not expect such an impressive (550 liters, despite the fact that under the floor a full reserve) volume. And with the rear sofa folded, it increases to one and a half cubic meters. Cave! Moreover, the cave is landscaped: there are just three (one horizontal and two vertical) fixing grids, spacious niches on the sides, hooks, as well as a practical double-sided rug. On the one hand, the usual pile coating, on the other - rubberized, which will come in handy if you happen to carry dirty luggage. Another practical thing that the Czechs are so proud of is the ice scraper, which is stored under the lid of the tank. Small, but better than nothing.

Strict and concise design - this over the years will not get bored. Yes, the interior is without frills, but it is comfortable and maximally functional: the seats are accepted as dear, the grasping steering wheel is adjustable in two directions, praise and a spacious platform for the left leg. In rich trim levels there is a rare navigator for this segment, climate control, rotary fog lights, parking sensors. The latter is not at all superfluous, since because of the sloping rear window, little is visible in the salon mirror.
The Rapid is based on the Polo sedan. However, unlike the donor, Skoda offers a wide selection of engines, including two diesel engines (they are predicted to be selected by 45% of European buyers). The base will go 75-horsepower 3-cylinder gasoline unit. But there were none on the test. So the object of my attention at first was the next version in terms of rank - with a 1.2-liter engine with 86 hp, which is combined exclusively with a 5-speed manual. If you ride it alone, alone and lightly, then the dynamics still go wherever. The main thing is not to let the tachometer needle drop below 1500 rpm: in this zone, the motor does not pull at all. He comes to life after 2000 rpm, but he still lacks vigor. In general, the car without complaints.
The Rapid proved to be much better with an engine of the same volume, but with a power of 105 hp. Incidentally, he sings in a duet with a 6-speed manual. The temperament is noticeably hotter: overtaking is easier, in the left lane of the highway you do not feel like a stranger. And the average fuel consumption following the trip amounted to 7.4 l / 100 km worthy for such a capacity.
Those who do not want to shift gears manually are addressed with the flagship engine version - a turbocharged 1.4-liter power of 122 hp, which must be equipped with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Lightweight "Rapid" with such a power unit flies. Starting with a slip, it does not sour on acceleration even after 100 km / h. True, the car demonstrates such bravurah burrows only in sport mode, in normal it is much more calm.

Rapid rides on Austrian roads. Thanks to the harsh (stiffer than the Polo Sedan) suspension, the liftback arrow flies along the highway, not one iota deviating from the course, and it stands firmly on its feet in corners. No noise to you, no vibration, solid European car. There is no budget in the hint. But it's all here in Austria. In Russia, Rapid is going to offer with a package for bad roads, which implies an increase in clearance (from standard 136 mm) by 15 mm in front and 12 mm in rear. Springs and shock absorbers will also receive different characteristics; the car is likely to become softer, that is, better suited for road bumps. But most importantly - in our market it will be equipped with a 1.6-liter 105-horsepower aspirated by Polo Sedan that meets Euro-4 standard. Apparently, DSG does not shine for us - as an alternative, they use a 6-speed automatic machine with a torque converter.
While the Czechs have not decided whether to offer Russians engines from the European market. I am ready to believe in it. But the fact that they still don’t seem to know whether we will launch the Rapida release is not. Of course they will! According to our data, production starts in the first half of 2013. The secret is open and that it will be produced side by side with the Volkswagen Polo Sedan, near Kaluga. The cost is still unknown. The manufacturer talks about prices in the middle between Fabia and Octavia. So, in the database, the car can be bought for about 500, 000 rubles. The middle is not golden at all. It is better!
