No matter how you look at it, from which side you go and in which performance you look, there is no doubt that the current station wagon is even bigger, more convenient, roomy, more beautiful and more modern than the previous one. Of course, the car has a lot of aluminum and expensive, but terribly promising materials. And at the press conference they paid almost more attention to communications equipment and systems that help the driver than to motors or gearboxes. Well, how to imagine the third generation Audi-A6 Olroad Quattro without all these modern bells and whistles!

But I'm trying the old way to delve into the settings of adaptive air suspensions, especially the electronic filling of all-wheel drive. I study the characteristics of economical (almost 20% savings promised) diesel and gasoline engines working together with the 7-speed S tronic robot (a constructive analogue of the DSG) or as much as an 8-speed automatic. And in the business card of the car there is also a 4-zone air conditioner, an 8-inch monitor on the front panel, Bang & Olufsen acoustics with 15 speakers and a very practical trunk for 565 liters. It remains to understand what is most interesting.

A leisurely conversation about a special yacht veneer, abundantly used in the decoration of one of the interior options, suddenly turns into an argument. In my opinion, the more familiar high-tech version suits Olrowd better - leather and aluminum trim look more harmonious than the striped yellowness of natural wood. Trivia? Finally, you can try on the autobahn what the only TFSI petrol engine in the line is capable of (3.0 l, compressor, 310 hp), which is currently quiet, but juicyly basking in the bowels of the engine compartment. What adjustments are there when the car already feels every movement with the steering wheel, gas and brake pedals, gently but impeccably perceiving the driver’s commands. And do not blame her for excessive aggression, sportiness settings. It's nice to know that smart suspensions themselves chose the right body position, all-wheel drive - the correct distribution of torque along the axles, and the steering took and adjusted to all this, forcing the optional 20-inch tires to grip the road thoroughly. And even under the gas pedal, even in Drive mode, the engine and the 7-speed S tronic gearbox have such a margin that it seems that there will be a need - and the A6 will accelerate to infinity just as smoothly and smoothly.

Having made sure that even on the secondary tracks the A6 Allroad maintains composure and remains comfortable, I confirm: the machine is also well prepared for these conditions. Sometimes on uneven, repair areas of the suspension coating, it is as if stone, turning into off-road mode. After all, the main thing here is ground clearance and energy intensity. But once the asphalt again becomes level, these qualities go by the wayside, and the station wagon turns into an obedient, flexible creature, allowing you to forget about its impressive dimensions.

You won’t get past this version of the "Olroad", even knowing that with this diesel engine (3 l, 313 hp) equipped with a double turbocharger, the A6 will not be delivered to Russia yet. But attracted by the new color and Java Brown (cars with more modest 3.0 TDI, 245 hp, alas, white), and an 8-speed automatic. And what is the unique family sound that the car gives out, it is worth turning on Sport mode for at least a few seconds. First, you just catch the changed tonality - a rude, street baritone invades the world of comfort and well-being. It's great to listen to how confidently, in combat, the engine sounded, even if it was a diesel engine. It turns out that acoustics added additional ones to the two main “subwoofers” of the exhaust system. They sound so inviting, filling the driver's life with a special meaning.

And not in vain, because with this engine and gearbox the speed of a diesel station wagon is noticeably greater than that of a gasoline!

Of course, with a sharp acceleration there are small delays due to the machine. Go count all eight gears and choose the one you need. But when you shoot, you become a fan of not only the sound, but also the huge torque that turns the Audi-A6 into a formidable shell.

What this monster lacks is the very balance inherent in the version with a gasoline engine. Somehow heavier, more weighty were the reactions in the bend, more inert reviews about the movement of the steering wheel. There were delays and inaccuracies in the choice of the trajectory. You adapt, of course, but all the same, the desired merger with the machine, alas, no. But it’s a pity, it hurts everything else into Biturbo.

This is a difficult feeling when, when you are in a luxury sedan, you suddenly think about minimal emissions, preserving the environment and other fashionable topics, which, in my opinion, are not very compatible with the concept of a “car,” especially a representative class. Here you just want to fall apart in the back seat, completely not bothering with what kind of power plant you are lucky. The main thing is to be quiet, comfortable, soundly. And this is what any Audi-A8 provides in abundance.

But from these positions, the car is like, having first of all silence and lack of vibration. Light skin, high-quality Bose acoustics, monitors, one of which informs about the consumption, conservation and recovery of energy.

But now the electric traction seems to be over - and for some reason, along with the sound of an awakened motor, not only powerful longitudinal acceleration seeps into the A8 saloon, but also slight irritation. The reason for this is the insufficiently thoroughbred sound of the gasoline “four” compared to the rest. It happens!

Perhaps driver's observations will be different? In general, it’s not bad: the brakes seem a little artificial, and sometimes the steering wheel, which suddenly becomes filled with some unnatural feedback. But the rest of the "A8 Hybrid" is understandable and obedient. And, of course, incredibly comfortable. But I just can’t save at all, and the gasoline engine intervenes endlessly in the acceleration process. And we start with Audi, it seems, smoothly, and accelerate, barely touching the accelerator pedal (EV mode), and the internal combustion engine is almost the whole time in business.
