"Revenge of the electric car"

USA 2011

Director Chris Payne

“Revenge of the electric car” is Chris Payne’s second film about electric cars, of which he is an ardent supporter. This time, the director decided to dwell on what efforts it was worth returning electric vehicles to the market.

The film begins with a story about the first EV1 electric car created by General Motors, a painful demonstration of the destruction of the entire fleet of these cars and the recognition of the company that it went in a dead end. However, the director’s first film is dedicated to this - “Who killed the electric car?”. And now the electric car, which has held a grudge, is trying to avenge people for indifference and neglect.

The creators of Revenge of the Electric Car got access to two major manufacturers of electric cars - Nissan and General Motors, as well as to the newcomer to the electric vehicle industry Tesla Motors. Therefore, the film mainly tells about these companies, and even about an amateur enthusiast nicknamed Gadget, who “represents thousands of people around the world who made it possible to switch to electric cars and created them even when car companies were least concerned about it . He has been busy all his life transforming ordinary cars into electric ones and even manages to make a little money on it.

Thus, the film has four main characters - Bob Lutz (Chevy Volt), Elon Musk (Tesla Roadster), Carlos Ghosn (Nissan Leaf) and Gadget (many different electric cars). The star of the tape is the Tesla electric car, a super-expensive and super-charged sports electric car.

Enthusiast Elon Musk, who managed to earn money in other areas, receives a grant, and also decides to invest in a company to create expensive high-quality electric vehicles. GM designer Bob Lutz went the other way. He at one time refused an electric car, and after many years he found the strength to acknowledge the error and return to this topic again. His vision of an electric car is a purely utilitarian mass car for daily urban use.

Carlos Ghosn has his own point of view, which the director characterizes with some maliciousness as a very prudent person who "will not even get out of bed in the morning for free." He sets himself the task of not just creating an electric machine, but making it as cheap as possible, so he very carefully monitors the actions of competitors.

The crisis of 2008 unsettles everyone. Even ordinary cars cease to buy, companies cut funds for new developments. Elon Musk is on the verge of a financial collapse, money is running out, he has nothing to even pay his employees. To top it all off, the mass return of purchased cars begins due to numerous breakdowns. He decides to take a desperate step - the development of a budget sports car Model S. He says with bitterness that he works 24 hours a day, does not constantly get enough sleep, and has already been on the verge of a nervous breakdown several times. You will not envy the rest of the heroes of the film: General Motors loses billions of dollars every day, Bob Lutz is considered eccentric, and he is the first in the list of top managers who are eager to retire. Behind Gon is Nissan, which means thousands of employees, and it only depends on him whether the company will be able to survive the difficult time or whether bankruptcy awaits it. The gadget is also experiencing its own personal crisis. Vandals set fire to the workshop, and the fruits of his many years of work burn to the ground. He is unlucky twice: he takes a loan and tries to start everything from scratch in a new place, but it turns out that the chemical industry was located here earlier, it is impossible to work here, and the inventor in desperation begins to think about stopping his small business.

But no one canceled the laws of life: a black stripe follows a white one, time passes, and the crisis remains behind. People’s interest in electric cars is once again awakening. The filmmakers do not promise a bright future, but the Gadget once again moves and rebuilds its workshop. And he and his wife are already happy that they are doing what they love. Bob is given the opportunity to work on the Chevrolet Volt, Carlos Ghosn brings Nissan Leaf to mind, and Elon receives the long-awaited tranche, which means an opportunity to conduct further development. The director’s emphatic phrase sounds in the epilogue: “What is needed for a real revenge of an electric car? Only time.

According to analysts, by 2015 there will be about 1 million electric vehicles in the world.

From the director

“There is such a trick in creating documentaries - you choose 12 stories and hope that two or three of them“shoot,”Payne told about his film. The plot did not include the story about the attempts to introduce the Mitsubishi i-MiEV in Iceland and Shay Agassi's “Better Place” project. The first story did not work out due to problems in the economy that did not allow Iceland to develop the i-MiEV market, the second one due to the delay in the arrival of new electric vehicles for Better Place.

Thus, the film could contain much more stories than was included in its final version. But the picture nevertheless conveys the main idea: in spite of everything, the “green” cars returned to the exhibition halls and continue to win hearts.

Personal opinion

Despite the life-affirming message, questions still remain after viewing. Eco-friendly transport is still not powered by air, and the production of electricity is far from being so environmentally friendly, although the filmmakers prefer to keep silent about this. However, there is hope that the sources of electricity will “turn green” over time. And people who move progress will help them in this.
