Land Rover 3D: virtual reality center
The virtual reality
Virtual reality virtual reality
The first part of the program begins with virtual reality. In a specially equipped room, a three-dimensional image of a car, an interior or a three-dimensional projection is projected onto white walls, which can be taken apart literally by bones.

Using a wireless manipulator, the designer or engineer scales the image, rotates it, in general, controls it in three planes. In addition, the image follows the rotation of the head. Interactive is most impressive, if you wish, you can penetrate into the giblets of the machine, laying them out in layers. You can try to pack your luggage in the trunk or put people in the passenger compartment. The company’s center cost £ 2 million.

From the virtual center, we move to the real one, where we study the design and solutions of competitors.

Land Rover engineers keep a close eye on competitors. We are facing a disassembled VW Touareg, Amarok pickup, BMW X5. However, unlike the Chinese, here they not only take into account the experience of other manufacturers, but also find their own know-how in disassembled designs. The guide points to the X5 skeleton, noting that the Bavarians borrowed some of the decisions in the power structure from them.

Three-dimensional travel is not the only unique technology. Land Rover designers have the opportunity to translate a three-dimensional model in kind. In special furnaces, the laser “bakes” the desired shape from the durable polymer. Thanks to this, any improved part or cladding can be made in the shortest possible time. Impressive.

In addition to theoretical research on the nearby Gaydon track, field tests are underway. The track itself is a former military airfield, converted for the needs of automobile testers.
As in the engineering center, all competitors are at the test site: Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi. Cars are tested both on a dynamic road and in off-road conditions. Land Rover SUVs also pass life tests, simulating thousands of miles on different surfaces and fords.

Testers are available not only an imitation of the highway, but also a mountain road with profiled corners. The machines are subjected to both physical exertion and aggressive liquids, in the irrigation zone the body is treated with saline.

In the afternoon we went to a real castle - Eastnor Castle, where the local Land Rover Experience school is based.

Bicentennial castle with a huge territory, one of the largest in England, is located in the national park. Tourists stop here for the weekend, wild deers roam the surroundings, and nature is pristine. In the native Penates Range Rover, and Defender begin to be perceived in a completely different way. It is in these impressive locations of clients that Land Rover is taught by the wisdom of an off-road professional team of instructors.

Our route passed through hilly terrain, a forest and several fords. In turn, we drove the road behind the wheel of a Land Rover Freelander, Defender, Range Rover Sport and Evoque. And if for the first three obstacles were trifling, then for the integrity of the bumpers and units located on the bottom of the Evoque I was afraid. As it turned out, in vain. All cars went the route without complaints. Although, in fairness, it is worth noting that the Evoque's front lip was crowned by a solid aluminum protection. According to subjective impressions, the Evoque turned out to be the friendliest and most comfortable to drive - lightweight, short-haired - just what you need. The main thing is not to overdo it with speed in a rut; so as not to strike the suspension, the ground clearance of the "youngest", of course, is not a couple of Defender or Range Rover.

Defender, by contrast, was the hardest. It immediately feels that the car is designed for a strong male hand, after a general refined England it became harder to get used to it than to other cars. In addition, the right wheel and manual, which must be controlled with your left hand!
