First, about what no one sees, but about which everyone has already heard. About the new proprietary Skyactiv technology (we talked about it in detail in No. 23/2011). Briefly, the meaning can be explained as follows - total optimization. The chassis, body, power units are subordinated to the idea of squeezing all the juices based on proven engineering solutions. Every nut, every node is optimized. For any design, new materials are sought - stronger and lighter than before. Perhaps this is similar to the training of a professional athlete or astronaut. Exhausting workouts, special nutrition, allowed to receive "substance" - and here we have a superman! CX-5 is the first Mazda model in which the Skyactiv theme was laid down already at the stage of “fertilization”.
In Russia, the CX-5 is presented with the new and only gasoline engine - Skyactiv-G (2.0 L, 150 HP). There is no boost, but the compression ratio is unprecedentedly high - 14: 1. And all for the sake of high profitability (less than 7.0 l / 100 km in the combined cycle) and half-turn start-up - “start-stop” (in Mazdian i-stop) at the CX-5 in the database. Transmissions - only 6-speed - “automatic” Skyactiv-Drive and “mechanics” Skyactiv-MT. Their main feature is lightness and compactness.
The Skyactiv chassis is a MacPherson strut in front and a multi-linkage in the rear with revised geometry (mainly the attachment points of the trailing arms are mostly changed), as well as a steering with a reduced gear ratio. By the way, the latter automatically changes the force on the steering wheel, depending not only on the speed of movement, but also on the adhesion of the wheels to the road (that is, positive, negative and lateral accelerations).

I feel like driving as if I had been driving the CX-5 all my life - all the buttons and levers are in place. True, overtaking is given a bit hard - the pedal to the floor, and the acceleration is half the expected. Maybe the first step did not separate? I try to switch manually. But the sense is not too much - the "machine" is already working quite efficiently. Here, perhaps, the point is the lack of torque and a rather significant mass.

Meanwhile, the non-military-Georgian road (the test was conducted in the notorious events of 2008 in the Transcaucasian country) is getting worse and worse. Potholes are found more and more often, which violate the almost perfect silence of the cabin with an unpleasant hum. Under these conditions, the suspension, which worked perfectly on a flat track, seems harsh, some bumps and jerks come to the steering wheel, as well as a slight longitudinal buildup of the body on gentle waves. But in general, everything is very good. That steering with adaptation was especially pleased - the sensations of an expensive thoroughbred car.

Now a few words about what our space shuttle looks like. Perfectly! Dynamic and proportionate. Especially on regular 19-inch wheels. Of the striking external innovations - a pentagonal radiator grill and slanting eyes-headlights. Inside, too, everything is not bad: the habitually verified ergonomics of the driver's seat plus unusually solid quality finishing materials. That is, the voices of dissatisfied "Mazdavods" were heard, especially the owners of an older and larger brother - CX-7.

- The CX-5 pleased me. Finally, Mazda has a completely new ideological car - without saving on materials and stuffed with the most modern electronics. At the same time, the corporate identity is perfectly visible in the new design. There are complaints, the main one is mediocre, although not the worst dynamics in the segment and the price is comparable to the older, though not so technically advanced CX-7.
