This Peugeot started up as quietly as the Mitsubishi i MiEV, refreshing memories of how we dragged a discharged electric car on a cable through a traffic jam on the Garden Ring. On that frosty evening, cursing technological progress, I counted the editorial diesel pickup on top of engineering. Now, if you connect a diesel engine and an electric motor not with a cable, but in one car! The chance gave me a chance to get acquainted with such a car: Peugeot-508 RXH with the hybrid-electric drive Hybrid4 at my service.
The French have already tested this technology on the Peugeot 3008 crossover (ZR, 2011, No. 12). Now, next is the all-terrain wagon with increased (compared to the usual 508th) base (by 40 mm) and ground clearance (by 50 mm). The diesel engine driving the front axle and the electric motor with rear-wheel drive work both together and alternately. There is no mechanical connection between them, all commands from the electronic controller are received via cables.
Using the washer that was attached next to the transmission selector, I select the first of four modes - Auto. Up to 70 km / h “Peugeot” travels only on electric traction, then a diesel engine is connected. Automation is set to save fuel - it chooses how to optimally use both engines. If necessary, connect and four-wheel drive. In the city, I switch to ZEV (zero emission mode). Sounds subside, now only an electric motor works. So you can drive 3-4 km, then the diesel will purr again. Finally, the long-awaited Sport - forget environmental friendliness! And the steering wheel is poured even with too much effort. I drive down to the lane and turn on the 4WD all-wheel drive mode. In this case, up to 40% of the total torque can be transmitted to the rear axle. If the batteries are discharged, the four-wheel drive still works thanks to the starter-generator, which gives a constant power of 8 kW.
When asked when the hybrid 508th will appear in Russia, the French answer evasively: for now, they say, we are only studying the market. I think it will take a long time to wait. After all, the Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4, whose sales in the Old World began in February, did not appear here. Judging by the fact that in 2013 the French want to sell more than 33, 000 hybrids (Peugeot 3008 Hybrid4, 508 RXH, and 508 Hybrid4), Europeans have already enjoyed this technique. The Russian buyer is not yet very willing to pay for such an unusual product. And it's not just about the higher price. Winters are cold, which means that the batteries will run out faster than usual. Only in large cities can one be sure of the quality of diesel fuel, and in addition there are few specialists who can service hybrids.
Finally, state support is needed. For example, it would be possible to consider the transport tax not from the total power of the car, but only from the diesel horsepower. Foreign experience suggests: indulgence is necessary. For example, in the USA, Germany and France, buyers of hybrids are provided with a whole range of benefits (loans with a low interest rate, tax deductions, etc.) that reduce the cost of a car by $ 4000–7000.
However, the Hybrid4 technology allows the use of not only diesel, but also gasoline engines. Therefore, it is possible that the Peugeot-508 RXH will appear in Russia, which will be pulled by just such an engine, but pushing, of course, is still an electric motor.

In 1995, Peugeot introduced the 106 Electric, which was driven exclusively by electric traction. The electric drive was developed in the French engineering company Elye, and the Safe Group SA provided nickel-cadmium batteries (there were twenty of them in the car). An electric motor of 20 kW accelerated the car to 90 km / h, and the cruising range was 80 km. Charged the 106th for about seven hours. The car was sold in France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK. In 1995-2003 the owners found about 6400 "Peugeot" trains.
