The most breakthrough event: we picked up and delivered a brand new, very advanced engine - a diesel Cummins. First on the Gazelle and immediately on the Sable. It is good that 16 valves are pushed by only one camshaft with a chain drive. Simple, reliable, easy to maintain and repair. Just one glow plug - it warms the frosty air right in the collector. Our designers pretty nodded when they saw how the oil and water pumps are arranged.
Of course, a heated fuel filter with a booster pump, everything is located in an accessible place. To this, a staffed - independent coolant heater. Who in the cold struggled with solidifying fuel, he will appreciate.
It so happened that the first cars equipped with the latest Cummins technology were our cars. Now this type of motor is supplied to all the global auto giants. By the way, the design capacity of the 2.8 liter diesel engine is 160 hp. So, GAZ has a good reserve for the future.

We thoroughly worked on the transmission: we selected a different gear range, the crankcase was reinforced with stiffeners, the shafts and gears are made of steel of more durable grades, the bearings and seals are imported. And most importantly - they replaced the native synchronizer with a foreign, solid three-cone design. Gears literally stick at any speed and do not growl. It is a pity that there is only one such synchronizer in the box. But the most loaded - between the first and second. Clutch also from a high-class manufacturer: basket, disc, bearing - Sachs, clutch cylinders ZF.
The transfer case was especially sensitive. After all, before, even the workers on the assembly line cried when they screwed the Arzamas unit, not to mention the owners of the machines - such was it unreliable. Now the production was organized at home: the gear teeth were polished (strength increased, the characteristic howl disappeared), reliable SKF bearings and imported cuffs were installed. Suspension and control mechanisms were not ignored.
But what is all the mechanics worth without a durable body! Two years fought over this problem. We walked through all the weaknesses, spied on how their competitors defend. And they tried to do no worse. Many parts are stamped from galvanized steel. And on the rolling of the hood and doors put a sealant, painted according to an improved scheme. Before the experiment at the training ground, it seemed to me that the engineering school of SUVs, which had developed back in the 1930s, was lost - I admit, I was mistaken. Preserved knowledge, traditions, craftsmanship and, most importantly, enthusiasm. They created a good, in fact, passenger SUV.
