Penetration into the collection of the Museum of the History of Army Motorization resembled a spy novel from the Cold War. A taxi slows down in front of the barrier, a soldier comes out of the booth, and after a short verbal skirmish, the driver refuses to take him further, - it turns out we drove into the military camp of the NATO base. No need to be scared - the museum is around the corner. Another checkpoint, my passport is taken from me, after which the guard for a long time consults on the phone with the authorities whether to let the potential enemy into the restricted territory.

I am still beyond suspicion: I get a visitor's plate, and accompanied by a private boy. Before me are all the achievements of Italian industry for more than a hundred years, and not only military and not only automotive. When in 1955 the Army Automobile Service Directorate decided to collect in a single place all the known models of vehicles serving in the army, tanks, artillery, and engineering equipment also began to pull together the same company. As a result, now there are about three hundred cars and motorcycles and about 60 units of armored vehicles in the museum. And in addition to many other historical artifacts - personal weapons, documents, samples of shells, missiles and bombs, up to sets of field utensils. And the cars in the museum are not only army: the first Italian crew with an internal combustion engine, the sports "Alfa Romeo" Tazio Nuvolari, the official transport of the presidents of the republic - they are also here.

But the main topic of the meeting is, of course, military cars. The Italian army tried on the car among the first (back in 1903), and in the period between the two world wars developed a lot of original samples. Most of them have survived to our time and are exhibited here. When you are in Rome, take the time to drive to the southern suburb of Chechinola - you will most likely be surprised by the large number of curious cars.

MUSEO STORICO DELLA MOTORIZZAZIONE MILITARE

The entrance is free

“Lancia” in the 1930s regularly carried out orders from the Mussolini regime. On the chassis of its passenger models installed a wide variety of special bodies - staff, medical, radio cabin. But this smallest and most popular model in the range, “Augusta” with a 1.2-liter engine of the proprietary V4 layout, was turned into a utilitarian pickup truck.

OM Autocarrett 32

Despite the unpretentious appearance, this tiny truck the size of a UAZ is a real masterpiece. OM Autocarretta-32 (the number is the year the production began) was created for the transport of goods weighing up to 800 kg and towing trailers weighing up to a ton on narrow mountain roads in the African heat. Specific operating conditions determined a lot of unique design features. In addition to all-wheel drive, the machine has four steered wheels, independent suspension in a circle with transverse springs and an impressive ground clearance of 250 mm. The military and this set seemed not enough, but because in the later series they introduced a lower gear in the transmission.

P4.100

The engineer Hugo Pavezi made a real revolution in the camp of military vehicles. Back in 1914, he designed a unique artillery tractor. Not only that, with all-wheel drive, its base is divided into two parts connected by a hinge, and this provided unprecedented opportunities for maneuver and cross-country ability. Ten years later, the design was perfected in the P4.100. The tractor on huge cast wheels with folding steel grousers, having an engine of only 57 forces, easily pulled trailers weighing up to 12 tons. The design of the Pavezi tractors was so successful that they were used in the Italian army until World War II, and the license for them Several countries bought the production, including the UK.

Fiat F2

The constant participation of Italy in the wars on the territory of North Africa, earlier than others, prompted her to develop machines for particularly difficult conditions. One of the first attempts was the Fiat-F2, a light monophonic truck with a 20-horsepower engine, the immediate predecessor of the 15 Ter model, which later became the model for the first Soviet AMO truck. On F2, the military installed a variety of special forces, this one for transporting the wounded.

Fiat Type 4

This 1910 Fiat Type 4 served King Victor Emmanuel III for field trips during World War I. A six-seater car made according to military specifications weighed more than 2 tons. A very progressive four-cylinder engine with a working volume of 5.7 liters developed a decent 45 forces and accelerated the car to 75 km / h.

Alfa Romeo

In colonial wars, Italians sometimes felt as if on an easy walk. It is not surprising that even the Alfa Romeo passenger car was ordered for military service. Especially for senior officers since 1939, sports convertibles 6C 2500 with a simplified, colonial body were produced. But the filling was as sophisticated as in the civilian versions: the engine was in-line, six-cylinder, with two overhead camshafts, developed 90 hp. The gearbox is a rare four-speed gearbox at that time. The suspension is completely independent. The only military addition to the mechanical part was a differential lock to overcome the terrain. Such colonial convertibles made about one and a half hundred.

Dovunke

Already in the 1930s, Italian companies began to actively use on trucks, including the army, the layout "cabin above the engine." Therefore, when Fiat received permission to revive the production of army equipment in the late 1940s, it simply resumed production of the pre-war Dovunke models developed by Spa. The machines were equipped with diesel engines, single-wheel wheels - in a word, despite their age, they were no different from the latest models. The latest samples of this family were withdrawn from service only in the 1970s.

6605 TM 69

Fiat has been developing a new family of tactical trucks to replace the Dovunka, which had been mastered before the war, since the early 1960s. The first production cars rolled off the assembly line in 1969. In the photo - the tractor 6605 TM 69, released in the second half of the 1970s, after the formation of the Iveco international syndicate. It was equipped with a more powerful six-cylinder diesel engine of 260 forces than other models of the family. Perhaps this is the last original army development of the company, in the future military trucks were created on the basis of cheaper civilian models.

Lancia Flaminia

The visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Italy in 1961 very successfully coincided with the intention of President Giovanni Gronchi to renew the government fleet. In an effort to not face the British monarch in the dirt and surpass the royal Rolls-Royce in luxury, they ordered four parade gigs based on the elongated Lancia Flaminia. There was critically little time for construction, but she who took Pininfarina in a row promised to be in time on time. True, she could not manage on her own. Various servos (for windows, soft tops and other things) had to be ordered from General Motors - in Italy of those years they were not used even on the most expensive cars.
