Along with automotive innovations, the GoodYear tire company exposition aroused great interest in Geneva. Interest was fueled by the fact that the company's engineers tried to look into the future of tires. The guide volunteered to be Massimo Di Giacomo Russo, a specialist in conceptual design, Goodyear.

Independent

The most impressed me was the self-priming tire. No, there was no compressor mounted in the wheel in the form generally accepted for us. There was no separate central compressor supporting the pressure in all tires of the car, as is done on military equipment.

The principle of action was brilliantly simple. A wheel rolls onto a tube, squeezing air out of it from the other end. The valve, adjusted to a predetermined indicator, maintains the required pressure.

After watching this video, any inventor, and even more so working in the tire industry, will die of envy and will tear his hair out, lamenting why such an idea did not visit him first.

Goodyear, Massimo Di Giacomo Rousseau, said to take up the problem of maintaining tire pressure seriously after setting out that 40% of drivers in Europe and America didn’t pump up tires at all. And underperformed tires are the reason for the excessive consumption of fuel, the growth of CO2 emissions, increased wear of rubber, deterioration of the car's handling, and with it its safety. An under-finished tire, as seen from the video, has deteriorated grip on the road, and a car that is uncertainly standing on the road … In general, everything is clear.

But any brilliant idea requires brilliant embodiment. And this is not so simple. According to Massimo, self-priming tires will become a reality in the next decade. Why so soon? There are already a lot of experimental cars running on smart tires at the Goodyear Research Center. The main problem is to ensure the operability of the pressure maintenance system integrated in the wheel throughout the entire life of the tire. But the results obtained by Goodyear are encouraging and confirm the fact that the search for solutions is going in the right direction, assures me Massimo Di Giacomo Russo.

The bold

No less curious was another novelty - a tire that does without air at all. The role of the shock-absorbing element in it is performed by twisted springs. "Spring Tire" - "spring tire" is the name of the company’s technology for this tire. And it’s not a tire at all in its usual form, but some kind of iron wheel.

Spring tire

She found her first use on the moon, for the movement of the American lunar rover Apollo. The tire was developed jointly with NASA, Massimo explains. The fact is that ordinary rubber pneumatic (air) tires are not suitable for operation in lunar conditions. The properties of rubber vary significantly with temperature. On the moon, the sun-lit hot spots alternate with very cold surfaces in the shade. In addition, solar radiation not filtered by the earth's atmosphere destroys rubber.

Now, Goodyear is trying to transfer space technology to Earth. After all, the moon tires are not afraid of punctures, fire. In the worst case, only one of the bearing springs will fail. The design is such that the neighboring ones will take over the work of the broken spring. The shape of the links is very important here, Massimo notes. Spring tires are characterized by their overall strength and flexibility, which allows off-road vehicles to travel on uneven surfaces at high speed with relatively small vibrations being transmitted to the vehicle body. They will find demand among foresters, firefighters, rescue services.

I cautiously suggest that the spring tire is too noisy and that a layer of rubber would not interfere with it. Mr. Rousseau agrees, and adds that a rubber braid on springs would be enough here. So the problem has already been thought of!

Pastoral

Perfectly! Look, tires can do without an external compressor, stop being afraid of punctures, fire, and impassability. The next step is getting rid of oil addiction! Of course, there is natural rubber - but it is very expensive. That is why petrochemical products are used in the manufacture of tires.

In 2008, Goodyear and DuPont tried to find an alternative and began working together to produce bioisoprene, a biological renewable raw material that can be used to make synthetic rubber. Raw materials are agricultural waste. The bi-tire already exists, the only question is how to put its production on stream in order to produce millions of pieces. The sample presented in Geneva, explains Massimo, has already been shown at an exhibition in Copenhagen. The tire has passed the prototype stage, and is ready for production.

Silent

Missimo not without pride reports that the Goodyear company is participating in the pan-European ecological project The Quiet City.

- We set about developing a tire concept for this project. This is a huge research work, in which the main task is not just to send a quiet tire, but to make it quiet without compromising other characteristics such as economy, reliability, and grip.

The project “Quiet city” at the first stage involves the introduction of “quiet” zones in five European cities - Bratislava (Slovakia), Bristol (Great Britain), Essen (Germany), Gothenburg and Stockholm (Sweden). The introduction of zones will be carried out using modeling, taking into account the impact of traffic and the creation of noise maps for various cities. It is no secret that electric vehicles will be used in these areas as the most quiet and environmentally friendly mode of transport. The main source of noise in an electric car is tires. To find reconciliation between man and the car, the silent Goodyear tire is called upon.

I thank Massimo Di Giacomo Russo for an interesting, forward-looking story and run further along the stands of the Geneva Motor Show.
