The first trip across Russia, the "canters" make the railroad. From time to time, a convoy arrives in Naberezhnye Chelny from the Far East with forty-foot sea containers. They have car kits that we have to turn into trucks. But this will happen a little later, and in Chelny at the Fuso KamAZ Trucks Rus plant, only “chassis with a cargo vehicle cabin” will be assembled from them. However, "at the factory" - it is said too loudly. In fact, this is the only, albeit huge, assembly shop in which they only collect together what comes from Japan in boxes. The boxes themselves, by the way, also go into business - summer residents willingly buy corrugated panels from galvanization.
So far, only the FE85D model of the last, seventh generation, with a gross weight of 7.5 tons has been selected from a rather extensive range for assembly in Russia. Mitsubishi has 15 assembly plants. The so-called Chilean variant is coming to Russia. Thanks to the increased side members and rolled thickness, he has the most durable frame, and the rear suspension is similar to the one on the heavier Fighter model. In other words, the option best suited for the most difficult conditions. Localization of production is minimal - Kama-218 tires, antifreeze and brake fluid. Well, maybe there’s another vacuum - for the brake booster, it is prepared from our air by a Japanese vane pump. True, in April they are going to master the riveting of the frame, and a little later - fuel tanks of 150 liters, with electric heating.

Mitsubishi 4D50–7AT7 is a true diesel engine with a timing drive with gears from the front toe of the crankshaft and two camshafts in the aluminum block head (with four valves per cylinder). Two camshafts - a highlight of the design, rarely found in commercial diesel engines. And there is still a grain of zest - two balancer shafts! On in-line “fours” with a cylinder volume of slightly more than a liter (motor dimension 114 × 120 mm), such concern for reducing vibrations is rare. Sleeves are dry, which virtually eliminates their cavitation destruction, and at the same time reduces external noise: a more rigid structure vibrates less. The power system is an electronically controlled “Common Rail” with three-port fuel injection, manufactured by Bosch. Accordingly, there is no crackling fuel injection pump and tinkling injection advance clutch. Perhaps that is why the soft work of the Fuzo-Kanter Chelny rushes to the ears - even though it has been frozen after night parking, even if it has been warmed up, the engine runs softly and quietly.
This engine overcomes the Euro-3 standards by EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) with liquid cooling and a turbocharger with an adjustable turbine. For Euro-4, when it is introduced in Russia, a diesel particulate filter will be installed, and with the arrival of Euro-5, they plan to equip the machine with an Iveco engine with a ZF gearbox. But until this time has come, “Kanter” has some competitive advantage - colleagues who rushed for the environment will no longer return (the previous models are discontinued) and are forced to make more expensive motors.

It is part of the Toyota concern, and its clutches and gearboxes are in great demand among many Japanese, Korean and even American automobile plants. A car assembled in Chelny is equipped with only a six-speed manual.

The height of the side members in the middle is 226 mm, the width of the shelf is 70 mm, and the thickness is 6 mm. However, in Chelny they do not collect shorties, there are only four options for the base: 3410, 3870, 4170 and, the longest, 4470 mm. A six-meter van or an onboard platform, one of the sizes most demanded by carriers, can easily become such. At the same time, sufficient machine maneuverability is maintained: due to the large steering angles of the wheels, the turning radius of the longest is only 7.8 m.
The drive of drum brakes with automatic adjustment of the gaps is a dual-circuit hydraulic, with anti-lock braking system, a vacuum booster and, which you will not find on cars, a brake force regulator on the rear axle. The need for a "sorcerer" is caused by a significant difference in the mass of an empty car and a loaded one. With a chassis weight of just over 2.6 tons, the payload is almost 5 tons! By the way, we note that KamAZ-4308 with the same carrying capacity and purpose (a delivery truck, in fact, a truck) weighs about 4.5 tons. And even if it is 10% cheaper, the buyer increasingly chooses a modern and efficient car - a portfolio of orders for “Kanter”filled two months in advance. And in the future they are going to master the assembly of the Fighter. Its total mass is 12 tons, of which the chassis is only 4 tons.
