Yes, the trouble is, diesel was breaking in the hands of the "collective farmers".

He overheated a little - and stole the head. Once a week, I didn’t look under the bottom - I said goodbye to the power unit supports, held high revs - broke the belt, folded the valves … God forbid the trailer pull and load it harder: the diesel will crush the liners!

I do not blaspheme the designers: they solved the task launched from above to build a diesel engine from the ZMZ 406 gasoline engine. But it is impossible to do this in a qualitative manner. Say, to get the same characteristics as a gasoline engine, the crankshaft will have to load one and a half times more. So, you need to increase the diameter and length of the necks, otherwise it will flatten the liners. And it would be nice to increase the radius of the crank, because a diesel engine is a torque motor. But where? The block is already there, the "knee" too. Get the ZMZ-514 - a complete compromise.

Such a motor would suit a light car, for example, Niva, but the guys from Togliatti are looking for a mate with a pedigree. Therefore, experienced jeepers who own the 514th handle it extremely gently. They even remove the iron roof and seats in order to make life easier for the Volga diesel engine.

However, off-road people are not used to moaning and began to look for an alternative to diesel. The Ulyanovsk company Dartech sent messengers to neighboring China, where there is a large enterprise: annually ships 500 thousand licensed diesel engines to foreign and domestic markets, including Isuzu.

We ordered a sample - a 92-horsepower supercharged "four" F-Diesel 4JB1T. Dismantled, measured and recognized as suitable for installation on an UAZ. We adapted all the engine sensors to work with control devices, adjusted the power unit mounts and handed over the drawings to the Chinese for the manufacture of an adapter plate for our gearbox and clutch.

The diesel engine withstood the test with confidence. They checked both in everyday life and in very harsh conditions - “based on” the trophy-raids popular in the Ulyanovsk province, in which you need to go fast, but head over heels in mud and with a winch. At the finish, he showed time no worse than that of military vehicles.

After the “Dartech” established a small series of UAZs - from the “loaf” to the “Patriot” - with such engines.

SLOWLY BUT SURELY

I tested the car on the go. The labor history of diesel-hard workers can not be hidden. The lever of the box must be wielded quickly, to feel the edge of traction at each stage. But you get used to it right away. The pace in the city is at a level that will not yield to cars in the capital of the province. In fifth gear, I can move without a hitch and sixty, and accelerate without squinting to one hundred and twenty. Pulls! The clutch is tight, but it works smoothly, you can forget about pre-gas. Therefore, maneuvering in the parking lot with this diesel engine is as simple as with an automatic transmission.

In the woods, the UAZ is like a sack. It breaks the thicket and goes where it’s scary to step.

Is it worth it?

Dartech produced over two dozen cars with F-Diesel engines in a year. There have been no complaints from the owners. They say that even in Japan, in Hokkaido, such a car rides and the owner is quite satisfied with himself. The price of UAZ-Hunter with a Chinese engine is 650 thousand rubles. Expensive? Perhaps. After all, a factory UAZ with a gasoline engine costs only 400 thousand, with a diesel engine - 450 thousand. With the consumption of diesel fuel of 8 liters per hundred, fuel savings will pay off the overpayment of 250 thousand rubles to only 90 thousand kilometers. But with gasoline you can’t get the off-road qualities that diesel gives.
