It is unlikely that out of hundreds of drivers surveyed at a gas station, a dozen will name another parameter of gasoline, except for the octane rating. Resins, sulfur, oxygenates - this is something abstruse and not indicated on the gas station. The driver knows for sure that it is the octane number that determines the degree of suitability of the fuel for use in a particular engine. But this is not about whether this is a brand new engine or some kind of ancient. The octane number characterizes only the possibility of using this fuel in cars with one or another compression ratio. To be more precise - with less or more pressure at the end of the compression stroke. And since today, in general, there is no way to meet low pressures, and low-octane gasoline unwittingly began to be considered something second-rate. This is, to say the least, unfair.

WHICH ARE THE OCTANE NUMBERS?

The octane number is a characteristic of gasolines, characterizing their knock resistance, that is, the ability to withstand spontaneous ignition under the influence of a pressure wave generated in the combustion chamber during fuel combustion. It is determined by comparing the detonation intensity of the test fuel with a reference one having a fixed octane number. To do this, use a special single-cylinder installation with a variable compression ratio (UIT-65 or UIT-85). It is curious that, for reasons unknown to anyone, it is often said that research octane number (OCI) is determined somewhere in chemical laboratories, but motor (OCM) is determined at polygons and special roads. In fact, the difference in the definition of these numbers consists only in the operating modes of the UIT installation. To determine the OCH, the crankshaft speed is 600 rpm, for the OChM - 900 rpm. In addition, when determining the HFM, the mixture is heated in front of the engine. As for testing on real roads, it is determined yet another type of octane numbers - road (DOCH). It is obtained in the course of testing a real engine by comparing the limits of detonation at operating conditions when operating on the test and reference gasolines.

It is conventionally believed that OCHI characterizes the properties of fuel during the urban cycle of a car’s operation, and OCHM characterizes the road cycle.

THAN BADS OF LOW-OCTANE GASOLINS?

Are the 80s and 92nd gasolines far behind in terms of economy and ecology to their high-octane counterparts?

An instant answer is heard: inferior, of course! The argumentation is known: after all, all smelly “Muscovites” and other “ZILs” ride them! This is a typical amateur response. The stinkiness of those cars is to blame for the imperfection of their design, and not fuel at all. But no concrete accusations against such gasolines have ever been seen.

If you figure out how many cars traveling on the roads of the former USSR have a low compression ratio, you get more than 60%. And we really need low-octane fuels. There is no reason to rush to ban their use.

But what about future prohibitions?

Upcoming changes to the regulations have been published, according to which not only the clause authorizing the use of high-quality 80s and 92 gasolines is canceled, but also the “super offer” is given in general to throw out the “octane number” indicator from the controlled parameters! To understand all this is very difficult. It must be assumed that something will be written on the label of the gas station, but real monitoring of this is now optional. As for the inscriptions on the fences … Moreover, it is proposed that mandatory certification of the main types of fuels be replaced by voluntary!

The argument, as always, is killer: this is what they do. For us, an Expert is any person from the West. And there, they say, all fuels and lubricants are subject to voluntary certification - and nothing, they live … But parsley is that this will not work for us! In the West, a completely different mentality has long developed, and it is unrealistic to sell uncertified products there. This will certainly be perceived as an attempt to sell something substandard or illegally produced. And if the consumer, God forbid, complains about the quality, then the lack of a certificate will be an aggravating circumstance for the manufacturer during proceedings in court. I note that the courts in the West are also "slightly different."
