Porsche 911 Carrera

Porsche 911 Carrera Porsche 911 Carrera
Gonna make a sentimental journey,
to renew old memories.
Frank Sinatra Song
STORED LAUGHTER
“You probably look stupid. You can not jump out of the car, showing unexpectedly fallen happiness. Who cares that it was made in 1984, when you were only ten years old! Restraint is necessary. You carefully get out, indifferently look around the car and step aside with a measured step. And don’t yell at the whole parking lot that you feel like Tom Cruise from Rain Man. Firstly, he didn’t go to Porsche there, secondly, the eighties were in fashion only on the dance floor, and thirdly, this is the 911th from the time when Porsche simply did not know how to get rid of from a wonderful coupe with a motor in the ass. The car, already terribly out of date, was tried in every way to destroy, but he did not give up. The Americans bought everything and bought this endless legacy of the Beetle, and nothing could stop them. Strange people."
Really strange, confirm. California is the country of Porsche, the most important consumer of the largest 911 market in the world. But here all the time you have to go with caution: police patrols are much more common than in Europe. I pressed the gas a little harder, flipped the gear - and then you slow down: the legal 55 mph is far behind.
The massive center console in the Panamera style greatly changed the perception of the inner world of 911. Ergonomics have also changed because of it: the gearbox lever is now higher and closer to the steering wheel

It was all so, but the car was high: it buzzes like a flock of hellish bees behind its back, kicks at any opportunity, groans if the transmission, tucked with a thin and long lever, goes a little wrong, - in general, the owner lives and pleases. There are only two hundred and seven forces in the hummer, but it gives joy to hell. This 911th started me up, and then all the time I looked back at a row of old 911s put up for short familiarization, up to the previous generation with the index 997, and wondered which car to take. Perhaps the 964th is the last attempt to hold onto the air opposition? Or is 996 the first over thirty years of the model’s history to completely rethink the concept, right down to the transition to liquid cooling?
But what about the latest 911, the very one for which I raced across seven seas and two transplants to the quiet California Santa Barbara? This is a completely different Porsche - one that I did not know yet. Similar sensations experienced nine years ago at the premiere of "Cayenne".
Outwardly, the beginner, of course, is similar to all his ancestors at once. As I was told in secret, with the appearance of the 911th, you can do anything with one condition: do not touch the front part - the world famous physiognomy of a surprised frog that has fallen under the ice rink. The developers sigh, recalling the only deviation from the rules - the “bionic” headlights of the 996 model: their bizarre shape made it possible to cram so many useful things inside with little effort!.. But that approach was recognized as harmful - the expensive 911 model has no right to be like a cheap “Boxster”. The ovals of the headlights were returned to the next 997th model line.
“Everyone has it, but for some reason 911 doesn’t” - this does not apply to the last generation. In addition to the rear parking sensors with acoustic indicators, the new model finally got the front one, with the image displayed on the central display

Eh, the 997th … I traveled on almost all of your countless varieties. Just yesterday, this model seemed to me an unsurpassed super-mechanism for managing human emotions. But today it is among the old people, and it seems to me that the difference between it and the first-generation machine, the same one that was born in 1963 and was produced (albeit with numerous changes) until 1989, is much less noticeable than when switching from 997th to the newest model at number 991. There was a quantum leap, the decline of the Jurassic period.
What is the cardinal difference? In everything: in dimensions, an increased wheelbase, a motor moved closer to the center of the car, an electric power steering, the introduction of a anti-roll system … Yes, what to list, I have not seen such a thick Porsche press release. If this is your first Porsche 911, it will become the benchmark. But if there were rear-engine Porsches of previous generations, then a variety of options are possible here - depending on whether you are going to enjoy it or ride.
THE HISTORY OF TOYS
A colleague sitting on the right seat loves to ride and therefore endlessly asks him to double-check his observations: did the clutch work a little more accurately, did the gear lever shorten, did the stray noise on the steering wheel disappear … As if convincing itself: yes, it became better, but not enough to change your 997th to a new generation. He knows such nuances much better than me and draws my attention to certain improvements (from the engine's voice to the sound of the audio system) - with clarifications: barely, a little, a little.
The layout of the model is slightly different: the driver and passenger are pushed forward, the front and rear axles have receded from the center of the car, and the engine is now mostly located inside the base - these changes give controllability to central motor habits

Maybe a little bit, a little bit, and a little bit (you must admit, it’s hard to radically improve the Porsche’s driving performance), but I remember very well the moment: when I went to the parking lot where our 911 brandy color stood, a colleague asked permission to look into the salon - and quietly froze in admiration. The car was not out of his familiar world. Perhaps it was at that moment in his head and in mine that one melody creaked synchronously from these California places caressed by God and his followers:
Oh Lord, won't you buy me a Mercedes-Benz?
My friends all drive Porsches, I must make amends.
At one time, Janice Joplin was right. Her 356th is a direct offspring of the commoner "Beetle". Even the 997th in terms of the number of electronic lotions is still far from a Mercedes. But the car with the 991 index is a completely different Porsche - from the era of the Cayenne and the Panamera. If this generation of 911 appeared in 1971 or a little earlier, Janice’s repertoire would have one less song.
From a marketing perspective, this is the best Porsche 911 ever. It has everything that a premium car now relies on. And the tilted console in the Panamera style, stretching through the interior, categorically separates the new 911 era from earlier times.
A number of devices seem to be the same as before, but the “magic screen” to the right of the tachometer shows a bunch of newfangled devilry (navigation, tire pressure and other necessary things), and in addition can amuse the driver with tips for the moment of optimal gear shifting for the best acceleration or write overload data

The 997th against this background is out of date at one time. He is cramped, unpretentious and not a fig glamorous. Flat door panels, some kind of stupid scattering of keys on a tiny center console, a minimum of possibilities to change the settings of the power unit and chassis, even in the maximum configuration, walking on uneven steering wheels. There’s even a handbrake, you imagine, you have to tighten and let go yourself - horror! And the sound of the engine … It’s kind of thin. Not like now, when you optionally make it more formidable at the touch of a button. Then a membrane is included in the case, transmitting air vibrations from the intake system through a special channel directly into the passenger compartment. And this is not to mention the mass of other curious gadgets of the 991st, right up to the possibility of observing on the display, to the right of the tachometer, furiously galloping dots denoting longitudinal and transverse overloads. But why is the owner of the Porsche? My God, did he really indulge the generation of PlayStation and Need For Speed? Why Porsche teenage toys?
What for? Yes, just to be. Like most iPhone apps, why not download them if they are offered for free or for a symbolic one dollar? A lot of such entertainments are now in the 991st, moreover, for almost the same price as requested for the former 997th, which became unexpectedly “naked”. Did I admire him only a year ago?..

I admired it was the case. And I will continue to admire. He is clean and holy before the car altar. Although the new 911, with all its sybarism, is magnificent just like a car. He is perfect … and this is beginning to bore him. I tried to find fault with the electric power steering, which replaced the hydraulics, but was forced to retreat. Well, yes, the steering wheel has become noticeably lighter in the parking lot, but is it really bad? In all other situations, I feel the road and wheels are much cleaner than before. And the steering wheel goes to the zero position with greater willingness and accuracy. To confirm the feeling, I return to the base and jump in the 997th - yes, everything is not so polished here, not so adjusted, but the general impression of the car did not get worse. She's just more natural. Its “noises” are not cleared by digital processing - there is no buffer strip in the form of software between the driver and the road.
SEVENTH HEAVEN
A little later I finally reconciled. Actually, why look for problems where they do not exist? The car really got better. And how this is achieved is the tenth matter. But she glides even less with her nose in fast corners, sensitively and quickly puts in place the rear axle trying to overtake the car, and generally reacts very smoothly to any of your desires. Especially when a machine with a PDK robotic gearbox is selected. If you want, it will be affectionate and begin to save fuel, opening the clutch when coasting and turning off the engine at each intersection, and if you want, it will turn into an evil bitch, instantly throwing three or four steps down and encouraging you to spit on the limit signs displayed on the instrument panel. And between these provisions, there are many other options for relationships with the car, combined with a set of keys on the same Panamerican console. At the same time, you are surrounded by much less noise and vibration that are not needed by the modern Porsche driver.
HEY FEED
Base engine

The base engine has become smaller in volume: 3.4 liters instead of 3.6 liters. But its power increased - 350 hp. instead of 345 - due to a more high-speed character, and the appetite has become more moderate. The 3.8 liter Six designed by Carrere S has retained its previous displacement. At the same time, the maximum speed rose to the level of 7800, and with them the power: 294 kW / 400 hp New nozzles with multi-point sprayers, more precisely dosing fuel, as well as a modernized air filter and exhaust manifold helped.
On average, about 0.6 l / 100 km is saved by the owner of the "start-stop" system (a rarity on sports cars); recharging a battery tormented by frequent engine starts helps to recover when braking. Intelligent thermal management contributes to the savings. In total, all these constructive delights gave a good result: the consumption of the basic version in the combined cycle is only 8.2 l / 100 km.
Another interesting innovation in the cooling system is the compact radiators located on the edges of the front bumper. Their highlight is in the design of the tubes pressed tightly to each other. The heat sink of a pair of main radiators was so effective that there was no need for an additional, central one. Designers won not only in mass (about 6 kg), but also in geometry, making the front overhang shorter.
INTERNAL PREMIERS
Seven-speed manual

Another novelty: for the first time in a passenger car, a seven-speed manual appeared. Many parts were borrowed from the PDK robotic unit with two clutches. The novelty, of course, is a bit heavier and more massive than the previous six-mortar. But higher gear reduces engine speed by 19%, saving fuel and improving acoustic comfort. One of the curious features is the seventh gear lock. To exclude an error, the transition to it is "allowed" only with the fifth or sixth.
The robotic PDK has a coastal mode: remove your foot from the gas pedal and the clutch disconnects, interrupting the connection between the wheels and the engine. They turn on again, the driver should press one of the pedals or switch to manual switching mode. It is curious that for safety the transmission will not disconnect if the car moves on a slope. The developers promise that the innovation will save up to a liter of gasoline per 100 kilometers.
For the sake of fuel economy, the Porsche even waved to the holy - they replaced the power steering with an electric one. In theory, the advantages are obvious: compactness, lightness, fuel economy - 0.1 l / 100 km. But can he provide the same transparent connection with the road? The developers not only remained informative, at the same time reducing the force on the steering wheel, but also gave the steering additional functions. The electric power steering slightly pushes the steering wheel, as if prompting the driver in which direction to turn it in order to stay on the trajectory. And if he did not respond to the prompt in time, the electronics will do it on their own. The kinematics of the front wheels were also reworked - despite the elongated base, the turning radius is comparable to the performance of its predecessor.
RELIABLE AT ANY SPEED
Pendant architecture

In a cursory glance, the suspension architecture remained the same: the front of the McPherson (although other schemes, such as double wishbones, were also considered), and the rear multi-link. However, almost all the elements were recycled. Lengthened the base by 100 mm and widened the front track (by 46 mm for the Carrera and 52 mm for the Carrera S), the car became more stable and more obedient. Compact suspension struts allowed to reduce weight by 5.5 kg and place 20-inch wheels in niches. Improved anti-bite properties: with sharp braking, the front of the body sags less. They took care of the cooling of the brake mechanisms, directing part of the air from under the bottom to the wheel arches. For the first time, Carrera S installed six-piston calipers and 340 mm brake discs (10 mm more than its predecessor), four 911 pistons and 330 mm diameter discs on the back of all 911s. Another innovation is the electromechanical parking brake.
Behind the acronym PDCC (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control) lies a roll counteraction system: the hydraulic cylinders installed at the ends of the stabilizers prevent the body from tilting in corners. It feels like you are driving on a map: a solid chassis, precise control, unlimited pleasure.
