The graph of the development of the AvtoVAZ lineup until 2020 (see lada-auto.ru) clearly shows: the new Low Cost model (aka Granta) was supposed to appear in 2010, in 2012, ousted Zhiguli and Kalina”, and a little later, in 2014, also“Samara”. Everything is clear with Zhiguli and Samara: their production will be stopped or will continue at other plants. The fate of Kalina is different: to disappear from the plant’s program or to turn into Low Cost already in 2012.

The appearance on the streets of Tolyatti of Kalin in a Grantov guise suggests the conclusion: AvtoVAZ chose the second option. The updated Kalina should be at the top of the Low Cost sector - just above the 2190 and 2191 models, a little more expensive and prestigious so as not to compete with the Grant. But in this case, Kalina will catch up with Prior, which, judging by the program, will be updated in 2015-2016. The latter, as part of the upcoming modernization, is simply obliged to become even more expensive in order to rise above the more expensive Kalina, but for this it will surely have to increase in size.

Let us return to the prototypes of the modernized Kalina that run around Togliatti under the name Linaka Ada (?). As we know, such cars have two body styles: a hatchback with a short rear overhang, a rear copy of today's Kalina with an index of 1119, and a station wagon is a close analogue of 1117.
Both have a hood, front fenders and headlights from Grants, but the front bumper with integrated radiator trim, judging by the sketches we got in hand, will be original. The middle part of the body, as for the "Grants" sedan, was borrowed from the "Kalina". The backs of these cars are also almost Kalinov’s and are unlikely to change much. Looking at the cars, you can understand that the rear of the station wagon differs quite a bit from today's: a bit cut off by the side (third) glass and the shape of the lights that crawled out onto the sides. The hatchback has changed the shape of the lights. Both cars have rear wings with a wide, grant flanging.

Changes in the cabin are unlikely to be radical. They say that these cars will be equipped with original front seats with vertical adjustment and side airbags. Most likely, we are talking about the seats prepared for the "Grants" in the luxury version.
Another difference is the dashboard, which is similar in style to the grant one, but which has a place for a large display in the central part. One of the options for using it is the built-in navigation. Upholstery doors for sure from the "Grants" in a luxury version. You should not wait for a new engine, because today Kalina already has two completely modern sixteen-valve valves - 1.4 and 1.6 liters with a lightweight connecting rod and piston group - and a similar eight-valve 1.6 that recently appeared. Automatic transmission, promised at the luxury "grants", will surely go to the updated "viburnum". Well, a short steering rack prepared for the Grants. However, AvtoVAZ has been trying this kind of steering on Kalina and Priore for five years now. It’s time, finally, from trying on to tailoring.
Suspension on the modernized "viburnum", apparently, will be grant: to have two of its options on a budget car is expensive. However, it is rumored that the updated hatchback and station wagon will receive different suspension designs depending on the configuration. However, judging by the sluggishness of the plant (for example, with the same short steering) and the persistent desire to save on each nut, such a solution is unlikely to work.
