Quiet winter morning. Volvo S60 is heading from Stockholm to northern Sweden. The driver enthusiastically talks with the passenger sitting next to him. Suddenly, an elk jumps out onto the road. The steering wheel to the left, the spikes try to catch on a slippery surface, but in vain - the speed is too high. The car loses control, flies into the oncoming lane. Bam! The rattle of twisted metal, the ringing of plastic, which had stiffened in the cold. Silence … The doctors let the driver go home, and the passenger at the nearest hospital issued a verdict: minor abrasions, scratches and bruises. Miracles? Perhaps, but every trick has a logical explanation.

WHO OWNS INFORMATION

“The blow fell on the side, in the place where the front passenger was sitting,” explains Thomas Broadberg, head of the Volvo Security Center, opened near Gothenburg in 2000. - Even before the arrival of the police and the ambulance, our specialists rushed to the scene of the accident. They provided first aid, and then engaged in collecting information. They thoroughly described all the damage to the car in order to clarify at what angle the collision occurred, what was the speed at impact, studied the place and conditions of the accident, even questioned eyewitnesses. With the consent of the owner, the car was delivered to the laboratory for a detailed study. The information collected will be useful for work and will save more than one life.”

Thomas Brodberg, head of the Volvo Security Center: “The level of security for the future model depends heavily on the knowledge that Volvo engineers have. The task of our center is to give them maximum information. Virtual and real crash tests can more accurately identify the strengths and weaknesses of our machines and make them safer."

The task of our center is to give them maximum information. Virtual and real crash tests can more accurately identify the strengths and weaknesses of our machines and make them safer."

One of the main assets of the Volvo Safety Center is a 40-year-old database of traffic incidents involving Swedish cars. Just think: over 40, 000 accidents and 65, 000 participants. It is this invaluable data bank that developers use from time to time: they analyze statistics to identify typical, most frequent occurrences and first model them on a computer and then check them in a real crash test.

After all, the information provided by the accident does not allow us to fully appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of the car. For example, it is known that in the accident described above, people sitting in the front row were not injured. But what if passengers were also sitting behind? And if the children? Or hit speed was 10 km / h higher? Therefore, all the indicators collected after the accident are first loaded into the computer and the program simulates what happened.

Virtual tests not only save time and money, but also process more parameters. Every day, from 15 to 60 cars “crash” on the computer screen, and before the main shock test, experts manage to “smash” more than a thousand of such 3D models. And although the computer results are almost no different from the real ones (this confirms the comparison of virtual dummy injuries with injuries of people injured in road accidents), the work done is finally checked during the crash test.

Everything that happens is shot by 18 cameras at a speed of 1000 frames per minute. The cameras are installed not only on the top and sides, but even under the transparent floor. The survey complements the information received from the mannequins and allows you to examine in more detail how the car behaves upon impact

BETWEEN SCREEN AND CUBE

How to reasonably save on security? Volvo replaces some crash tests with bench tests. This is a kind of intermediate stage between computer simulation and hitting another machine or barrier. And more precisely, the simulation of the latter, only without contact with an obstacle and, therefore, without damage to the body. Such tests are beneficial if you have to test, for example, restraint systems or interior elements that affect safety (dashboard, steering wheel, seats).

An interchangeable cab, simulating the front of one of the models, is mounted on a movable platform, and the installation abruptly pushes it back. The effect is the same as with a frontal impact: mannequins move forward. Belts with pretensioners and airbags are triggered, an ultrafast computer takes information (up to 100 parameters) from mannequin sensors, and a high-speed camera records every movement of inanimate testers - these data will come in handy during “flight debriefing”.

Everything, as when hitting a cube, is only cheaper and requires less time to prepare. After the next test, it is enough to change pillows, squibs, belts, check the main fastenings and interior elements - and again you can seat the mannequins and start the countdown. Therefore, bench tests are carried out on average twice as often as crash tests, sometimes up to four times a day. There is another advantage: with serial tests on this simulator it is much easier to maintain the specified parameters (acceleration, impact distribution). In general, a unique stand, however, it is not able to completely replace the crash test.

BEATING DETERMINES SECURITY

The most cruel and at the same time spectacular test takes place in the heart of a security center. Two tunnels lead to the “meeting point”, through which test cars sent by prudent operators fly the last way. The highlight of this structure is the turning mechanism of one of the tunnels, turning the strip at an angle of up to 90 °. This makes it possible to simulate impacts to the side and at an angle. The other pipe is stationary, but its length allows you to accelerate the car to 120 km / h - enough with a margin for any test.

At the end there is a direct stationary stand, which, depending on the type of collision, can be installed at the desired angle and crowned with any nozzle - from the soft crushable barrier to the pillar. Here they also imitate the coup. The car is installed sideways on a special trolley, accelerated and abruptly stopped - the car flies off the platform and makes several somersaults. In the list of tests carried out, there are also road collisions that are relevant for the Nordic countries: sometimes a car crashes into “moose” in the laboratory. However, collisions with moose will soon become a rarity - Volvo is working on electronic assistants that identify animals and timely inform the driver about their approach.

In a large Swedish family “living” in a security center, there are more than 100 mannequins of different ages, height and gender (eight categories of adults and children), not counting virtual figures for computer modeling. These include Hybrid III mannequins and more advanced THOR for frontal impacts, EuroSID for side impacts and BioRID for rear impact. The price of each doll reaches 150 thousand euros

Every year, more than 250 Volvo cars break up here. In this case, the equipment is less than half loaded. Therefore, the Swedes carry out 350 more crash tests in this laboratory for other brands, including, for example, Aston Martin, Land Rover, and Jaguar. In addition, according to its own original methods, the Volvo Truck division is working on safety here, which occasionally provides trucks for crash tests with passenger models.

One of Volvo's custom factory crash tests

Model V70 crashes at a speed of 64 km / h with 25 percent overlap in an undeformable obstacle. It simulates a situation when the driver collides with a dividing bar (for example, at a fork in the road or at the beginning of a bridge) or, having incorrectly calculated overtaking, catches an oncoming car.

The angle at the obstacle into which the car arrived, smoothed, which softened the blow (the car slipped a little from it), however, the damage is significant. Naturally, the driver’s side got the most, although the body diverted some of the energy to the passenger side.

After the test

The safety cage worked perfectly, the cabin was almost unaffected, the front end absorbed the impact energy well, so the mannequins recorded non-dangerous overloads. In other words, people would not have been hurt in such an accident.

Such scales are not for the faint of heart. They show how body weight changes on impact. This 76-kilogram young man at only 25 km / h is heavier than almost 2 tons. Imagine the consequences if such a projectile flies to you from the back seat! Better ask the passengers in the second row to buckle up
