That morning, the center of the capital, as luck would have it, was seized by a car collapse: I had to call Igor Mikhailovich by nine in the morning and, to my shame, was already late for a good quarter of an hour! At the other end of the “wire,” a calm voice said: “It's okay, take your time. The main thing is to drive carefully.” From that moment on, the day went completely different - on a jazz wave …
Igor sat in the back seat of one of the four sedans that we had to “listen to,” and we started. One of the musician’s favorite discs, which he captured at our request, immediately went into business. The interior was wrapped in the nostalgic motive of Pat Metini. The jazzman turned out to be absolutely in the subject: “Is this our Lexus? So, "Mark Levinson, " which will sound pretty tough."
The musician instantly got used to the multimedia control of the LS 600h sedan and felt as confident in the settings menu as on the stage. First, Igor removed the preset frequencies on the equalizer: “I want to understand the raw sound. Most important to me is the readability and transparency of the reproduction.”

- And who is your favorite musician? I am interested.
- No, I can’t name one, it’s impossible. I like Benny Goodman, and Michael Brecker, and Miles Davis. By the way, let's listen to something else.
Miles Davis's drive swam into the changer slot. When we almost arrived at the scene, the saxophonist decided to change the performer. I, focused on the road, was ready to hear the next soft entry of some of the luminaries of jazz, and then … Tarada-yes, tara-yes-yes-yes! Deep Purple with the song Burn banged so unexpectedly that I almost tucked the Lexus into the pillar! Butman did not even pay attention to this: closing his eyes, he already "played" on an imaginary guitar. Just like a schoolboy boy! The final chord died down, and the musician grunted quite a bit.

- It looks like you and the guitar are at odds?
- At the age of fifteen, when I was studying on the clarinet, then I played music on the guitar. This inclined me towards rock, and there also jazz. First I listened to Soviet VIA, then off and on: Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep …
- And still love to make it louder?
- In general, if I’m not traveling alone, I don’t really like music in the car. You can’t do it loudly, but quietly - and you won’t understand what it sounds, regardless of style. Well, when alone, yes, I twist it almost to the fullest.
- What multimedia capabilities in the car do you miss?
- Now there is everything you need: traffic reports, television, telephone, and the Internet. We are offered more and more time to spend in the car, and this, in fact, is not very useful - a sedentary lifestyle.

- As a musician, you must be very demanding on sound quality?
- I do not make a cult out of sound. I use every opportunity to absorb something new musically, to find out names, albums. I have good “acoustics” at home, but the “iPod” is also suitable on the plane. Of course, a jazz or symphony orchestra should not sound electronic, but the content is still much more important.
When I write another record, I just need to evaluate it on a variety of equipment. To know how it will sound not only in a good, but also in a not very good car. Even - mono! In the studios there are special speakers for this that mimic an old TV. So I'm not spoiled. I remember how happy I was at the first Soviet car radio with cassettes. Of course, even inexpensive modern systems sound just fine against their background!
The following discs were used to evaluate sound: Joe Lovano - 52nd Street Themes; Pat Metheny - Offramp; Deep Purple - Burn; Branford Marsalis - Creation; Miles Davis - Seven Steps To Heaven; Igor Butman Big Band - The Eternal Triangle

- By the way, about the first car and about my favorite …
- My favorite car is the Mercedes S-Class, which I drive now. Although there is something to remember. He spent a lot of time driving a Toyota Starlet in America in 1987. In fact, she became my first personal car. And then there were a lot of things: “Dodge-Lancer”, “Ford-Thunderbird”, “Chevrolet-Cavalier”, “Ford-Proub”. Of course, I will never forget my father’s hunchbacked Zaporozhets.
The day flew by instantly. Alas, the stars do not know too much time. The photographer put up the cars and asked Igor to pose for the final shot. The musician took out the Selmer saxophone of the 1950s, from which silver had almost fallen over half a century, and did not portray anything, but simply played! Passers-by stopped for improvisation, people looked out from the balconies. Everything at once fell into place: here it is, that sound that so far is not able to reproduce the best speakers and amplifiers. And they are unlikely to ever be able to.
IGOR BUTMAN EVALUATES THE SOUND OF AUDIO SYSTEMS
If we talk about the initial, unprocessed sound, when the frequencies are brought to zero, I liked the Lexus, although it is a bit harsh on rock.

BMW is also good, but there is a different aesthetics of sound; it is a little softer, but the accuracy of the timbre and intelligibility are also on top. Both on a solid five on a five-point scale!

“Jaguar” seems to be made for lovers of discos: a lot of low frequencies, although the sound is generally clear, with good dynamics. Four points with a plus or five with a minus.

Mercedes sounds warm, but slightly limp. The sound is soft, but somehow matte, the sound picture is a bit blurry. Four points. Although I also have a Mercedes, I do not consider the audio system to be its strong point.
