Bach - there is contact! The rear bumper of the new Audi-A6 meets an obstacle. I did not calculate the distance and became the culprit of the smallest, but still an accident. And this is far from the first unsuccessful attempt for today. It’s good that on my way not real cars, but pliable foam cubes come across.
BECAUSE IN THE PARKING
Test conditions: three drivers perform parallel parking on the same car. First, without assistance, then - relying on the instructions of the parking sensors and a rear-view camera, and, finally, the most interesting thing - by activating an automatic system that turns the steering wheel itself, a person can only press the pedals and switch the selector of the machine. We fix the execution time of the maneuver, the mistakes, and, of course, reinforce these indicators with the subjective impressions of the participants.

We arrange foam cubes at a distance of one and a half lengths of the body of the “six” - you will come here and take the truck. Turn off the assistants and invite the lady behind the wheel. Several sighting maneuvers, we fix the time. Each time, the stopwatch's hand stops earlier, and it’s less and less necessary to pick up the cones and return the cubes to their place.
The participant only confirms the automobile wisdom: there are no people who do not know how to park, there are those who do not want to learn this. When the results stabilized, we turned on the parking sensors and a rear view camera … but the indicators remained practically unchanged. However, like the other two participants. And it’s easy to explain. There is enough space, you do not need to cut out millimeters during maneuvers, because everyone parks quickly and without errors.
Even with working parking sensors and cameras, you have to twist your head to accurately calculate the desired trajectory, and at the same time secure the electronics. The car operating manual recalls: having trusted the parking assistant, the driver is fully responsible for the success of the maneuver

“Oh, the steering wheel itself is spinning! “- the young woman cried out so emotionally that I almost dropped the stopwatch. Apparently, the parking assistant was also scared. He doesn’t manage to park faster - people win a couple of seconds. But with automation it is more comfortable, safer and, of course, more interesting. It’s nice to see how smoothly the difficult work is done for you. Although it’s a little disappointing that you didn’t deftly “fill” an empty pocket.
Schedule auto parking. The driver folded his arms and just pedals:

WELL, FOAM PLASTIC, WAIT
Is there really no point in electronic assistants? Let's try to tighten up the conditions - in a modern metropolis, parking gaps are usually much closer. We shift the foam cubes to the length of the body and add another 0.4 m on each side. By the way, it is such a distance that the automatic parking system considers minimal for the safe execution of maneuvers.
The task has become much more complicated - this can be seen both in time and in the number of unsuccessful attempts with downed cones and rammed cubes. Already no one manages to park the first time without the help of tracking systems without kicking a foam plastic obstacle. As well as stopping in at one go, placing the car exactly between the limiters. Attempts to get closer to the “car” usually end with a rustling rustling of foam plastic sliding along the asphalt. That's where parking sensors and a rear view camera come in handy. Turn on.
The gaps between the bumpers and the cubes became smaller, and as a result, the number of calls was reduced. Let's look at the time: a substantial gain, on average for all participants 10-15 seconds. And most importantly - without an accident. The turn of automatic parking has come: now it will show how to approach the landing!

Start the program with the button, turn on the direction indicator and drive no faster than 40 km / h along the parked cars at a distance of 0.5–1.5 m. As soon as the car finds a suitable parking space, a buzzer will sound and the corresponding picture will appear on the instrument panel

To my surprise, the assistant lost to everyone, and significantly. There are several explanations for this. First, a person initially chooses the most advantageous trajectory, which reduces the number of maneuvers. Secondly, in automatic mode, you have to call in more slowly (otherwise the electronic parking lot does not have time to turn the steering wheel), and also wait a couple of seconds after each inclusion of forward or reverse gear, until the assistant turns the wheels. However, except for slowness, there is nothing to blame the soulless assistant for - not a single contact with obstacles, a gap with the curb of a few centimeters. And this is much more important than the few seconds won during the maneuver.
AEROBATICS
But what if you leave only 0.25 m on each side? The conditions are harsh, but real: when there are no other options, many decide on a maneuver. Although this is far from easy even for those who regularly practice in such disciplines. When ten attempts failed, we decided not to waste time in vain and take the help of the parking sensors and camera. But even in this situation it turned out to be ineffective, because the sensors are not able to catch saving millimeters. The only way out is to leave the car every time to check the distance to the object, or to call someone to insure.
For the sake of interest, they instructed an assistant to park. Theoretically, he should ignore the order, because there is little room for maneuver. But electronics thought that she could handle this task. An inviting picture appeared on the display, the steering wheel spun … and on the first run, the parking assistant resigned, and the car froze diagonally to the curb. Very similar to the actions of drove, have not yet learned to think.
Everyone who tests the automatic parking system will probably have their own opinion. Some will consider it a fun toy or an expensive (from 18, 000 to 70, 000 rubles) trinket that can be dispensed with, others are an indispensable component of the safety of a modern car.
“It’s like you’ve been in space!” A colleague said about the automatic parking system. And she added: “But she could have done it without automation.”

Both of them are right, because the attitude to a particular electronic system depends on the training of the driver and on how smoothly the electronics work. So it was, for example, with stabilization systems. Having appeared a couple of decades ago, they were losing to experienced drivers in speed and clarity, and now it is simply unreasonable to neglect their services. This will also happen with parking assistants when they cease to need human help.
Is it possible that in a few years the new generation of drivers will not even imagine how to perform parallel parking? As already now, many people do not know how to manually shift gears, warm the engine with a carburetor or brake intermittently on a slippery road … This is natural, because technology makes a person's life more comfortable and safer. And you want vivid impressions - no one bothers you, having an electric kettle and a washing machine at home, warm water at the stake and rinse your clothes in the hole.

And along, and across
The second generation automatic parking system, which is also installed on Audi, can also perform transverse parking. The algorithm of the driver and the principle of automation are similar.

But to give a high mark for the performed exercise, the hand does not rise. One reason is the speed of mooring. I spent three times less time on the same maneuver: 28 seconds versus a minute and 34 seconds.
Slowness could be forgiven, work as an assistant more precisely. At first he parked the car so that only a very slender one would crawl out through the driver's door, another time it would be crooked. Moreover, he also made a mistake with the trajectory by striking the cone. In general, there is something to work on!
