I felt a trick all the time, while I was talking with the engineers and the management of the AvtoVAZ passive safety laboratory, while I watched the Grant prepared for slaughter, glued it with sensors, weighed it, tried it on to the deformable barrier installed at the end of the acceleration strip. They always told me that the “Grant” is good because it even has a standard configuration, which has nothing but the car itself, has a driver’s pillow that none of the competitors shows such safety concern.
And I, being a little uncomfortable after an emergency training camp and an emergency flight to Tolyatti, tried to bring together already known facts about the car in my head. Something is wrong here … Stop! Here it is. Just a few months ago, Anton Chuikin, returning from AvtoVAZ with the first material about Grant, said that there would be no pillow in the basic configuration, that a car for 220 thousand rubles could easily fit into the current norms without a pillow - and here in front of me is the real one machine in the simplest version, which, however, has a pillow! Where is the truth?

It turns out that over the past time the concept has changed a bit: now the driver’s airbag will be on all “grants” without exception, and not starting with the intermediate “Norma” for 256 thousand. The issue price was within 9 thousand rubles, and now the basic version will cost 229 thousand. A very modest increase in price and a giant breakthrough forward.
Even taking into account the fact that Standard will account for approximately 15% of all grants, these 15% of buyers are deleted from the list of fatalists for whom price is more important than their own security. Now AvtoVAZ decided to intervene in their fate - and for this it has earned our deep respect.

The current test is one of the mandatory certification for a car. Today they beat the basic Grant (with a pillow!) At a speed of 56 km / h against a deformable barrier with a 40 percent overlap. Impact on EuroNCAP requirements occurs in similar conditions, but at a speed of 8 km / h higher. Since the “Grant” is intended only for the domestic market and the near abroad, no one demands from it to comply with the norms of the European organization.
Although the result shown is quite level: there is no deformation of the passenger compartment, the driver’s dummy was exactly centered on the pillow, the pedals were minimally displaced, the instrument panel remained in place, the driver’s door opened after some effort (without using a tool).

It helped a lot when fine-tuning the safety of Grants that the Kalina platform used for it was thoroughly studied and in itself is already quite good in this regard. There was a mathematical model of body deformation, it only had to be optimized taking into account new elements of the body and interior, the use of new restraint devices developed and manufactured by the Japanese-German company Takata-Petri. Indeed, even the most expensive version of the “Suite” with additional functions, which will also include side cushions, is unlikely to be much more expensive than 350 thousand rubles. The level of prices and the set of options received for it is out of competition today. At the same time, Takata-Petri entered the Russian car industry seriously and for a long time: in April 2012 in Ulyanovsk it will launch its own production of passive safety system components, which, in addition to AvtoVAZ, will acquire GAZ, Sollers, Renault, Volkswagen, Nissan "…

And Grant, meanwhile, is also preparing to enter the international level - at least in terms of security. For example, pedestrian protection elements have already been incorporated into the project. True, by and large they got a budget sedan from the future modernized Kalina, designed for foreign markets. With it, the Grants will have in common, for example, the hood and wings, here they will be transferred to a safer place of the hood hinges, the thickness of the lining covering the mechanisms of the wipers is reduced, the rolling of the edges of the wings is changed. And it will be on every “Grant”!
