The main difference between the 2011 Wrangler and the previous version of 2007 is the interior. Outside, the JK has not changed much, but inside … When dealing with such a conservative car, the changes can be called striking. Basically,
everything remained in its place: the two-single multimedia system in the middle of the dashboard, and the “hooks” of the power windows on the console “a floor lower”, and the row of buttons on the transmission control levers … But if everything had been deliberately angular before, now it’s nice-round. My colleagues and I came up with a debate about the upholstery material - is it a substitute for leather or real leather? Representatives of the company assured that the material is natural. Like Wrangler himself. He is rude, but honest. This SUV, which raises complaints about comfort and handling on the pavement and is amazing outside the hard surface. Even without special preparation, only with a standard off-road package, which involves a complete set of Rubicon. Of course, it can be "planted", but in the hands of an experienced jeeper he is capable of real miracles.

Changes in the interior (the top is new, the bottom is the old) can be called cardinal. The shield is completely new, albeit with the same arrangement of devices. The steering wheel was made three-spoke, with a chubby rim and control systems (buttons "music" - from the back). The dashboard is now more prominent and rounded, looks much richer. The transmission control levers also look much better than before. The principle of action has remained the same, the razdatki left a direct groove. One sad thing is that this is no longer a car, but … a dinosaur, a representative of an endangered species. Real SUVs are dying out. Not in a natural way - a huge army of fans does not allow it. They are simply forbidden: supposedly dangerous to humanity. So … hurry to see. Although we would really not like to write an article under the heading “The Last Rubicon”.

In such an interior, even the design of details “for metal” looks good. And the abundance of Jeep logos is not annoying. In such an interior, even the design of details “for metal” looks good. And does not annoy the abundance of Jeep logos
How it all began
In the summer of 1940, the American army received orders from leading US automakers to create a light reconnaissance vehicle to replace the army version of the Ford T. Ford Motor Company responded to the call only after the small companies Willys-Overland and Bantam. The latter became the first, presenting a prototype after 49 days. The second was Willys Quad, and the third was the Ford Model GP.

Each company has released an experimental series of 70 cars. The second round was followed by the second, when they already made 1, 500 cars. The best of the trinity due to a more powerful engine than competitors, recognized Willys Quad. In accordance with the charter, it was renamed to MA, later - to MB. The letter M meant Military, that is, military. Where the Jeep name came from, no one knows for sure. Someone claims that this is the “inheritance” of the Ford abbreviation GP, but there is also a version that it was fixed to the car because of the popularity of cartoons and comics about the sailor Papaya, where there was a character named Eugene Jeep, eating flowers and moving freely in time and space.

Everyone knows about the exploits of jeeps on the fronts of the Second World War. They did not want to stop production after the war. On the contrary, a civilian was added to the army series. Called simply - CJ, from Civilian Jeep. Then Willys also registered the Jeep trademark. Later there were a series of YJ, TJ and the latest - JK.
What is a Rubicon?
This is the name of the river north of Rimini that Guy Julius Caesar, the provincial commander who went to the Roman Republic, was supposed to overcome. At Rubicon, he doubted his strength, but still dared to force the river. Caesar became emperor, and the expression "cross the Rubicon" now means cutting off the path to retreat.

However, Wrangler received the Rubicon prefix for another reason. One of the most famous and popular jeep competitions in the USA is the Rubicon Trail, a 22-mile climb up the cliffs of Sierra Nevada. Jeep-based SUVs are the main competitors. And part of the “trail” is used to test brand new products.

- Best of all, this car is characterized by an inscription on the handrail in front of the front passenger (and often the only one, due to lack of space and destination of the car). Hold on and physically feel what it means to touch the legend. The one who invented this inscription is the head, as the Ilf-Petrovsky “pique vests” used to say. And, of course, such an inscription is typical foppiness, according to another hero of the same literary work. The current Wrangler is similar to Willys except that the concept of an uncompromising SUV and body contours. It also has four wheels in the corners and a reserve on the rear side. If we consider the current Wrangler in detail, this is a completely different car. Yet for seven decades, the design, although not revolutionary, was updated more or less regularly. And the average buyer of this model, despite all his conservatism and commitment to the brand, is not at all eager to move to Willys MB. He wants to drive a modern car that is not inferior to the legendary army SUV in cross-country ability, and even better - superior to it, resembling in appearance, but much more comfortable, safe and environmentally friendly. In general, he seems to me to be about the same person who takes, for example, the Jaguar E-Type or AC Cobra and orders to fill the old body with modern units. Or he buys a replica with a composite body in retro style and on a modern chassis, so as not to damage the rarity.

I am impressed by this approach, I respect the classics. And if I had 1, 640, 000 rubles, as well as a large garage where other Real Cars stand, I would love to add the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon JK to them. This year, with an inscription on the handrail. If only because he himself will soon become a classic.
A Willys MB, by the way, can still be found on sale. In the USA it’s easy, in our country it’s a bit more complicated. But, if needed, this is not a problem.

- Our Jeep Wrangler Rubicon in a metropolis is like Dundee, nicknamed Crocodile in New York: overcomes any urban obstacles with equanimous ease. Everything is on his shoulder with him - and sticking out wells on the road works site with a removed layer of asphalt, and a high curb. But the car was created, of course, not for the amusement of the townspeople, but for the terrain, where it’s hard even to walk. And this is enough in the Russian outback. But can an average provincial afford a car for 1, 640, 000 rubles? Hardly. Therefore, in Russia, Wrangler Rubicon is rather an object of admiration for adventure lovers, or simply an exotic toy, rather than a utilitarian SUV, which it should be by birth. Although in the United States, despite its greater availability, it occupies approximately the same position. This is a fun car, but with great potential for Off-Road competition.

Riding a Jeep Wrangler is fun, especially without a roof. Having adapted, the awning top can be folded in five minutes and raised again in about the same time. Without skill, the process is much longer. This is perhaps the only significant inconvenience of this car, but, you see, it’s one thing to buy an expensive convertible with electric roof and quite another - to spend a considerable amount on a car that is obviously inconvenient in transformation. Not every wealthy person will decide to such a squander. And this means that the owner of Wrangler Rubicon has a burning look under his expensive Ray-Ban glasses, on an evening weekday he exchanges an expensive suit for old jeans and a jersey. He is still young in spirit, despite his age. Like the ageless contrary to the years lived by the Jeep Wrangler.

- This car, although in 2011, is a living legend. His lasting charm is in rude utilitarianism. The modern Rubicon is Willys's true grandson: from the grille (of course, about seven slots) to the tailgate on the rear side. Before this living bearer of traditions, I want to take off my hat. But behind the wheel the euphoria disappears: the frantic rhythm of modern freeways is not for him. Power in excess, but handling, directional stability, feedback on the steering wheel and ride - a clear deficit. Yes, this is a great all-terrain vehicle, but its off-road glory can play a bad joke. Belief in permissiveness often turns into a long search for a tractor.
Moreover, this "Mohican" is very attractive to vandals and thieves. Anyone will get into the car: it is enough to unzip one of the zippers of the awning or simply cut it through. Of course, you can go broke on an optional plastic roof, but it does not save you from free access to the engine compartment.
