The Pirelli-Winter Carving Edge studs for the first time in the history of ZR tests have become leaders. They are not only very good, but also very attractive in price among imported winter tires: the price / quality ratio is 5.5. The only thing that spoils the picture is the loss of several spikes during testing. The official answer of the company Pirelli in this regard is in the test of winter tires: ЗР, 2011, No. 9.

Let us briefly recall its essence. Having received information about the loss of studs in Pirelli-Winter Carving Edge tires found during our winter tests, the company conducted a thorough check of its tires and found out that there are unacceptable deviations in the size of the body in the products of one of the stud suppliers. After notifying the supplier of this, he took urgent measures - he stabilized the size of the spikes, and now Pirelli is confident that there will be no more loss of spikes.)

The magnificent three - Continental, Michelin and Nokian, who have earned fame as undisputed leaders in recent years - this time unexpectedly missed the Pirelli forward. Nevertheless, everyone stayed in the super-group, gaining more than 900 points.

Michelin-XIN 2 - the final second place, an example of balance and stability (price / quality - 6.8).

The third place belongs to Nokian-HKPL 7, which remains the most expensive: price / quality ratio - 7.7.

Continental's new product, KontiAisKontakt, could not stay on the podium, showing only the fourth result with a price / quality ratio of 7.3. However, in the overall classification, the tire yielded to its longtime rival Nokian quite a bit - only 1%.

In fifth place is the fifth model of the Gislawed brand, popular in Russia, with 889 points.

Sixth - “Goodyear UltraGrip Extreme” is inferior to the leader by points by almost 5%, but in terms of price / quality ratio (6.8) it is equivalent to “Michelin”.

Seventh place was taken by “Cordiant Sno-Max”, thus confirming last year the title of the best “studding” of domestic development. Value for money - 4.6.

Bridgestone’s new product, Ice Cruiser 7000, looks better than the previous 5000 I model, but is not yet able to compete with leaders (price / quality - 7.0).

"Kama Euro-519" in ninth place, price / quality - 4.9.

The novelty of the rootless “Kontair” tire “Arctic Ice II” with modest characteristics showed only the tenth result. Although the price / quality ratio for the buyer is the most profitable - 4.5.

The Amtel-NordMaster ST 310 system closes. Very weak - only 804 points, the difference with the leader is 13%. But the price / quality ratio is immodestly high, even higher than that of the winner of the Pirelli test - 5.6!

The oldest tires in the test: created in 2004-2005.

On the "white" coatings, in comparison with competitors, as they say, they do not roll. The weakest acceleration and lateral grip, braking is just weak. On snow, the most unreliable lateral grip and braking, sluggish acceleration. When accelerating, be careful with gas: tires easily break into a slip, preventing acceleration.

On the winter road, they are desperately scouring, sliding to the side even on slight deviations, they don’t respond to taxiing, so it is not possible to set the trajectory reliably. Manageability is problematic on any surface. The car responds to the steering wheel with significant delays. At the entrance, it blows out, and on the arc of rotation, if you still manage to fit into it, strives to deploy it backwards.

The slides are long, very smeared. Restore traction for a very long time. Deep snow is contraindicated: even a small snowdrift can be defeated even by running and they don’t want to turn. It is worth stopping, without a shovel you will not move either forward or backward.

They walk smoothly along the asphalt, but an uninformative steering wheel with an “empty” “zero” complicates the direction.

But on dry asphalt, braking is good, but on wet - the best. They do not indulge in comfort: they buzz loudly, voice any irregularities. Very tough.

Fuel consumption is slightly above average. The spikes hold firmly, but their protrusions are not enough to provide good grip on ice.

Tires with a mysterious pedigree. It is only known that they were developed by order of the Yaroslavl LLC Avtoshina, and were manufactured at Amtel-Fredestein factories. Novelty of the market and our test.

Unsure on winter roads. Acceleration and lateral grip on the ice are moderate, and braking is the weakest - they lose to the leader more than 10 m! On the snow, on the contrary, mediocre braking, while acceleration and lateral grip are the weakest. During acceleration, they suddenly lose their grip. On a snowy direct course, the directional stability is not clear enough, when adjusting the direction, the rear axle unpleasantly steers.

Manageability is complicated. On an icy road before turning, you need to reduce speed in advance so as not to slip past. It is better to operate the steering wheel gently and smoothly, otherwise the friction of the front wheels with the road is lost. In deep snow they move uncertainly, as if they rest against the snow. They don’t obey the steering wheel, they don’t want to turn, they are reluctant to get back.

The asphalt runs smoothly, but the delay in reactions and easy steering of the rear axle make it difficult to adjust the course. They buzz heavily, the noise increases with a set of speeds. Roughnesses pass hard, vibrate. They brake well only on a dry coating, on wet a little.

Fuel consumption is above average. The spikes are held securely, the size of the protrusion is normal.

Created in 2008, two years later modernized in terms of rubber composition.

Weaknesses on ice, on snow are more confident. Acceleration and lateral grip are weak, the brakes are slightly better. In the snow, it doesn't matter much, acceleration and lateral grip are average. On ice, during acceleration, they lose traction even with the smooth addition of gas. On the "white" road a little yaw, causing the driver a feeling of uncertainty.

Handling a few comments. The reactions are mild, with slight delays. The maximum speed on ice is limited by drift. In the snow, the front axle clearly follows the set path, the tail breaks into slipping, but the skid that arises is easily corrected. They overcome deep snow without stress, they allow slipping, they are good in reverse.

On the asphalt strive to deviate from the course, the adjustment is complicated by low information content on the steering wheel, large angles of rotation and steering the rear axle. They brake on a dry surface very mediocre, on a wet one - worse than everyone, although the difference with the leader of the exercise is less than 3 m. They hum in the snow and make noise on the asphalt with a tread. Vibrate on small irregularities, shake on medium and large irregularities.

Economical at 90 km / h, and at 60 km / h even better. The projection of the spikes after the break-in is not enough for good traction with ice. At the same time, an increase in the protrusion by 0.3 mm during the “white” tests is a hint of a possible loss of spikes.

Bridgestone Ice Cruiser 7000

Created in 2009, appeared in Russia in 2010, therefore they participate in our test for the first time.

Modest performance on white roads. On the ice, weak acceleration, average transverse grip, braking is slightly worse than average. In the snow they brake inefficiently, slightly accelerate and demonstrate average transverse coupling properties. Acceleration on ice is possible only on the verge of slipping.

On a straight line they scour the loose snow and ice, but the car is carried along the packed snow exactly. Manageability leaves much to be desired: the car does not obey the steering wheel in snow and ice, and reacts to its turns with delays. With a loss of adhesion, they slide for a long time, the course is restored poorly.

Snowdrifts do not like: they abut in deep snow, they are reluctant to touch and pull and pull. They walk smoothly along the asphalt, the steering wheel is characterized by good informational content, although the “zero” is not entirely clear. On dry asphalt they slow down well, on wet - very good.

They make a booming noise, voice irregularities. Rigid medium and large irregularities pass, vibrate on small ones, as if over-pumped. Fuel consumption is slightly above average.

The studs on this model are slightly larger than the previous 500th model - it’s close to optimal, but still does not provide high traction on ice. Hold the tire securely.

Cordiant sno-max

Production and sales started in 2009.

Strong on ice, primarily due to very protruding spikes. On ice, the best braking and lateral grip, average acceleration. In the snow, braking is better than average, good acceleration, but modest lateral grip. They prefer acceleration without slipping. On the winter road a little yaw, forcing to constantly correct the trajectory.

A clear passage of turns is prevented by sluggish reactions, and on ice they are less clear than on snow. Most likely, the protruding spikes are to blame, which first fold and only then make the car turn. Speed on the turning arc is limited by deep drift, requiring compensation.

In deep snow they move and maneuver reluctantly, they move uncertainly. On the pavement actively scour from side to side. Keep the straight line prevented by the smeared “zero”, low information content on the steering wheel, significant delays in adjustment and steering of the rear axle. On dry asphalt, they slow down the worst, losing the leaders to 4 m exercises. On wet asphalt, the braking properties are average.

They are buzzing loudly, spikes are crunching loudly. Vibrate on small irregularities. Fuel consumption increased at any speed. The projection of the spikes after running in exceeds 2 mm. Such spikes do not last long, besides, asphalt is actively scraped. Spike growth rate (0.3 mm during the tests). However, all the spikes are still in place.

It was established in 2007, rolled out onto the Russian market a year later, and in 2010 it acquired new spikes.

The ratio of adhesion properties on ice is not clear: lateral - medium, acceleration is weak, and braking is frankly weak. In the snow, the lateral grip is above average, acceleration is average, braking is weak. During acceleration, it unpleasantly abruptly breaks into a slip and is also sharply restored.

On a snowy road go smoothly, without complaints. They respond immediately to course adjustments. They operate well, differ in clear reactions, but do not like sudden movements of the steering wheel. Alas, our claims to diverse behavior in extreme conditions on ice and snow remained: on ice, speed limits drift, on snow - drift.

They do not behave very confidently in deep snow. With an increase in slippage, traction decreases, maneuvering reluctantly. On asphalt, the course is no worse than on a snowy road. I liked the clear “zero” and good information content, although when adjusting the direction, a slight steering of the rear axle was noted. On dry asphalt, they slow down better than anyone else, along with Gislaved; on wet, it is also very good. They make a little more noise than we would like, voice minor irregularities. They transmit vibrations and shocks on medium and large irregularities.

Fuel consumption is modest, economical at 90 km / h. The magnitude of the protrusion of the spikes to a reasonable extent, the growth rate of the protrusion at the limit.

An old-timer of our tests: established in 2006, repeatedly upgraded, and therefore the results are quite decent.

They show a good grip balance on white and black roads. On ice, average braking, acceleration and lateral grip are slightly better. On snow, the longitudinal adhesion properties are medium, and the transverse ones are very good. Acceleration with slipping is effective only in the snow.

On ice, it is better to carefully work with gas. They walk smoothly, a little late when taxiing. Manageability is mediocre: you have to turn the steering wheel at significant angles. Speed is limited by pronounced understeer. Sudden disruptions in sliding and the same sharp recovery spoil the impression. For this reason, when you exit the slides, the behavior is unstable. The rear wheels “grab” the road especially sharply, which leads to a shooting skid.

They ride in deep snow reluctantly and only without slipping. When maneuvering, the rear wheels strive to slide into the front track. They walk smoothly along the asphalt; we noted only an insufficiently informative steering wheel. They brake best on dry surfaces. On wet - braking is not the best, but still very good. Noise is almost inaudible. Vibrations and shocks are not transmitted.

Fuel consumption at a speed of 60 km / h is increased, with an average of 90 km / h. The appearance of the spikes and the rate of its growth are optimal.

Continental ContiIceContact

Image

The novelty, which saw the light last year, continues the traditions of the previous ContiVinterViking 2 model, which “opened” the asymmetric tread for “spikes”.

They show themselves best on “white” roads, weak on dry pavement. On ice, very good acceleration and lateral grip, average braking. In the snow, braking is very good (only Nokian and Pirelli are better), lateral grip is even better, but acceleration is only average. When accelerating, they allow slight slipping.

On the line they scour slightly, they require a course correction, they pull a little in the direction of deep snow. Managed well. They have clear initial reactions. A twisting skid appears on the turning arc, which allows you to register a turn. They are not afraid of snowdrifts. Allow slipping, but prefer the movement of the preload. Back are selected without problems. On asphalt go more smoothly than on a snowy road. A clear, understandable “zero” helps the driver adjust the direction.

On dry asphalt, the brakes are weak, along with “Kama”, on wet - medium. Buzzed by the tread on a snowy packed road. They transmit vibrations from small irregularities to the body. Fuel consumption increased at 60 km / h, and average at 90 km / h.

The spikes are on the verge of permissible, but, nevertheless, the spikes are kept very reliable.

They were born in 2009, but have already undergone modernization: the rubber composition and spikes have been updated.

Comparable to Continental in terms of the balance of grip on “white” and “black” roads (they prefer the first). They slow down very well on ice (only the Cordiant, whose spikes protrude strongly) is better, the lateral grip is average, and the acceleration is better.

In the snow, the situation is the same: braking is very good, they are held across the middle, and they accelerate better than anyone else. The course along a snowy straight line is very good, the steering is understandable. Manageability: clear reactions at any steering wheel angle. The behavior is strict, the car is screwed into a turn with a light helping skid. You can rotate it by steering wheel or gas discharge. They are not afraid of snowdrifts, confidently overcome them in any modes.

On the asphalt line they do not feel very confident - a clear course is hindered by a slurred "zero", large angles when adjusting the course and steering the rear axle. On dry asphalt, they slow down very slightly (only the Cordiant is worse), on wet - a little worse than average. They make a lot of noise, voice the change of coverage. Unpleasantly itchy on small irregularities.

Economical at any speed. The appearance of spikes on the verge of permissible. Despite this, they are very firmly held in rubber.

Created in 2009, since then they are sold.

The only tires from the leaders equipped with spikes with a round core unfashionable by today's standards. The best balance of grip on all surfaces that can be found on a winter road. On ice, the best lateral grip, medium acceleration and good braking.

In the snow, the best acceleration, average lateral grip and very decent braking. When slipping, the acceleration efficiency is slightly reduced. They walk straight in a straight line, scour a little on a heterogeneous surface, as if choosing what to catch on, but they do not stray from the intended course. Manageability is good: clear reactions, quick execution, understandable behavior. On the turning arc, speed is limited by a slight drift of the front axle.

They overcome deep snow confidently. Easy to move off, obediently maneuver, strengthening confidence, reliably selected in reverse. On the asphalt go smoothly. Experts noted a barely noticeable tendency to steer the rear axle when changing the trajectory of movement. Braking is average regardless of the condition of the asphalt - whether it is dry or wet.

They make noise only on asphalt at high speed. They transmit light shocks from medium irregularities. Economical at 90 km / h, 60 km / h better than average. The size of the protrusion of the spikes and the growth rate of the protrusion do not allow to doubt their durability.

The tire potential created in 2007 has not yet been fully realized.

Modernization (updating the frame, rubber compound and the transition to hexagonal spikes) allowed us to show an excellent result: not a single weak characteristic in the coupling properties. Acceleration and lateral grip are very good on ice, braking is not inferior to them. In the snow, the best braking and lateral grip, average acceleration. On the "white" straight line go evenly.

I liked a very clear and understandable "zero". Manageability is unconditionally good. Clear reactions with instant response combine with mild, feline behavior. The transitions to slip and back are very smooth and predictable. In the limit, a frightening demolition of the front end.

It is better to overcome deep snow with a move, and if you get up, start off without slipping. The straight line goes smoothly, but when adjusting the course, experts noted a not-so-clear “zero” and easy steering of the rear axle. They brake medium and on dry and wet surfaces. They make noise with the tread and spikes, with a peak at a speed of 50-60 km / h. Unpleasant tremors from medium irregularities are transmitted to the body and riders.

They are similar to Michelin in terms of fuel consumption: economical at 90 km / h, at 60 km / h the results are better than average. After the break-in, the size of the studs is normal, but an increase of 0.2 mm during the tests is alarming for the durability of the studs. During the tests, three wheels lost 10 pieces *.
